Thanks for your first impressions, enjoyed reading the good and bad instead of the usual "best/worst game ever!" type posts, hopefully will you continue the daily updates or perhaps make a more in-depth definitive review after more play time?

now, back to the topic -- who can show a screen shot or two of the crafting skill tree(s) and how it branches into say taming, armor, weapons, potions, etc.  ?

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Each of those is a seperate skill.

    So no branches between those.

However, the individual skills have other complementary skills that become available as you increase your skill level.

(But you probably know that... ;) )

ps. When are you getting in game?

I find if funny though that despite your mixed review of the game, what puts me off ever playing Darkfall is the attitude and complete thickheadedness of a few of the followup posters totally missing the importance of your post just to put you down.
An MMO relies on it's community more then any single aspect of the game. It apears Darkfall will fail because the community it has attracted is doing a better job to drive potential customers away then any bug, failed launch, poor system or bad review could ever do.
Thanks Darkfall fanboi's, you have finally made it clear I would rather save £40 then waste it to join such a community.

    Our pleasure.

    Cya...

    Your welcome.

    Nope you won't...

Actually, in common internet venacular, the term cya can mean both "see you later", or more simply "good bye". I would have thought, by the tone of my actual response, you would have understood. I guess that I was mistaken, my apologies.

I understood you ment "goodbye". I simply made a play on words in an attempt at humor....whoosh!

Thanks to the OP, I enjoyed your review.

I also read the bit that said 'Darkfall-day 1' so I realised it was about your initial impressions - some people missed that.

Your explanation of the combat is something of a masterpiece - well done.

Nice review, I share the same feelings. The only good things about DF are sandbox setting and beautiful world. Everything else is crap

Its a sandbox he should be able to play it in the style he wants ? After the first 20 minutes of play it needs to be "ah I think I'll head off in this direction". I know Eve did this to me.

If it fails to do this then the "opportunities" are obviously far from limitless.

Wait, I thought this was a "sandbox" MMO where you could "do anything you wanted".

You can. At least anything that is actually possible within the game itself.

    So, yes.

This is the best case of circular logic I have ever seen. The game is a sandbox because you are free to do anything in the game that is possible within the game.  /facepalm

Pong is a sandbox by that logic.

    day 2:

-sync issues still remain, there was a big spike of it this morning.

-starter city has only 3 NPCs in it...4 if you count the councillor outside. the city itself looks great, however.

-gathering works like wow, with a left click to gather and then a success or failure message. each gather takes 10-12 seconds. In 30 mins I collected 50 stone, about 16 sulphur and 2 gems from stones by the starter city. its clear why people macro this.

-world is very, very empty. I have found a zombie camp,a treetop town with birdmen and a temple with mummies, but thats it so far. Oh,and lotsa goblins.

-Running from the Mirdain starter camp to the A of Agon on the map took 40 minutes. To cross the map i estimate it would take you a little more than 1.5 hours if you could maintain a straight line, which would be pretty difficult with all the mountains and stuff. The world is very empty;in my travel I saw 4 mobs. im going to film this within the next few days as well as exploring in general. ive found some great places such as a decrepit dock,a castle and some ruins but theres nothing in them. I also found a large roman looking temple with 3 mummies by it. the world is amazing and looks great.

-clunky weapon switching. spells require you to press the correct hotkey and then left click to cast; if you have to swap a weapon out to do this you have to do the following:

    Press R to unsheath

Press hotkey for your staff (8 for me)

Press the hotkey for your spell (2)

make sure its gone into the little ability box

    left click.

It doesnt always switch weapons properly so sometimes youre left unable to equip a weapon, which is really annoying in combat. the whole system is very clunky. You get used to it and end up being able to do it quite fast, but it doesnt make it any less crap.

-Mob AI is really strange. It seems like mobs are programmed to simply run around randomly during a fight, which some people will proclaim as " ITS EVADING MY ATTACKS!" but it isnt, its simply running around in a random manner. For example, tonight i fought the birdmen at their nest. I began spamming mana missile at one and it ran over to me to engage. It then proceeded to run around in circles, and zig zag for no real reason. At half health,it ran away back to its initial spawn point and then totally ignored me..and the aggro range on mobs sems to be very long.

-the combat is getting easier, but its still woefully bad.Blocking seems to be completely broken.

-A lot of people say the game has a high learning curve, but thats not really true. In your menu you have a help panel that tells you all you need to know, including a guide on how to get started by killing goblins and skinning them. You also get a log in tutorial, and quests are marked on the minimap. If anything, the game does a great job of telling you exactly what to do and how. Its easy to learn most stuff, the difficulties come from the UI more than anything else.

-community is 99% good and friendly, the idiots are all on the forums it seems. No gankage that ive witnessed,in fact ive been ganked once which I wrote about in day 1. Kill stealing is still active, but in all honesty I think this is due to the ridiculous lack of mobs more than sheer malice. Community is helpful and theres a lot of chat going on at all times. So if you were thinking DF was going to be a bunch of retards l33t speaking and ganking each other over and over youre wrong. Forumfall, yes. in game? nope.

-the other most recent pvp MMO release, warhammer, pales in comparison to darkfall,so AV can be happy theyve stuck it to MJ and his promises.

Im tired otherwise id write more, but thats a quick write up for today. Hope I dont enrage any fanbois.

You've missed my point entirely I'm affraid. It's nothing to do with it being a review or not, it's just word. I was discussing the implecations of such an "article". I feel the responce of the poster I linked has shown the negative effects. Your level of hostility is astounding. It's just a forum pal, leave your pent up agression at the door.

Could you leave your own pent up petty angst at the door at the same time?Youve cluttered up this topic with totally unrelated posts about grammar and education. Sorry if youre feeling bitter about what ive written, but there you go.Its a public forum to discuss a game which I myself have bought and paid for, therefore I can have an opinion on it. Ive not written anything untrue or made up,simply experiences that ive had since starting to play.

If you want to go and make your own glowing "article" elsewhere, feel free.

lol, I'm out I'm not going to respond here anymore, just to let you know. I think my concerns for your article are valid. I'm sorry that you can't take criticism had you been able to I think you might learn something.

I'll leave you with your project. Just to let you know you should be somewhat grateful for the derailment of the post as this would otherwise be lost on page XX because it's crap. I've given up on being contructive because I might as well talk to myself. I'll watch this article fade to the ether.

Im eternally grateful for your enlightening posts on education and grammar, all from a guy with a name written in l33t. Back to forumfall you go! At least some people are happy with my posts from the replies here and the PMs ive gotten,so im satisfied.

Might want to take heed of your second sentence and not get so upset ;)

My pent up aggression?  You kill me, I hope you keep posting because all I have done while reading and responding to your posts is laugh my ass off. I find you comical.........get it?  Once again

I think I am going to wait a month or 2 before I try the game myself just to let the game mature a little more. I will however look forward to reading the OPs on going experiences in the game. Who knows maybe it will end up making me buy the game sooner......or not at all.

reminds me slightly of Vanguard.  I remember starting at launch and running around for 1-2 hours and not seeing anything, NPC's or players.... Not a game killer though.

What concerns me mostly is the players stealing loot etc.  However once the population thins out and becomes more evenly spread then I can see this issue improve.  I can't help wonder if they realise this is a major issue and sort it out.  Yes its a hardcore game but jumping in front of people to get hit so you can kill them is pretty much an exploit in my book.  Not sure how they would fix this but it would annoy the hell out of me.

LOL priceless, that was indeed a good laugh. I wonder if these ppl actually read what they write or just blindly throw anything to try and make this game look better than it is.

Its not gonna happen in a PvP world. If anything, PvP encourages people to seek out others to kill, not spread out and thin out.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
