Got an email this morning from one of these gold farming companies.
Usually it goes straight into the spam box, something caught my attention...
747 million gold in stock for WoW.
Nearly 3/4 of a billion gold...OMG
I recall a couple of years ago Blizard deleted 12(or was it 15?) million gold, but this amount is huge and just from one company!
Yes, gold farming exists and can't be stopped, but this amount nearly made me fall off my chair.

You mean this company has a gold stock of 747 millions? Woot awesome, its really too much.
No, it's just bad English that you misunderstood.
What that e-mail is saying is that Blizzard will be adding 747 jetliners to their impeccably credible lore in their next expansion and that they will cost 1 million gold each.
Couple years ago Ultima Online deleted 15 Trillion gold.
My first thought was: WTF how many zeroes is that? (Twelve)
My second thought was: People still play UO?
There's a simple answer to the OP; it's an unsolicited mail from a "company" that is founded on the concept of theft.
And you're trusting that info?
Gold Selling "companies" aren't accountable to anyone; they could have just as easily written 11.2 billion in that email if they'd wanted to; these "companies" don't exist for the benefit of the MMO player, they do everything within their power to infect you with spyware/trojans in order to farm user/pass details from dumbass players; whose accounts they then clear out.
It's a much more sustainable model than having to maintain farm-bots that run the risk of being discovered and banned; all they have to do is advertise that they sell gold; whack up a website with a nice embedded virus or two and you can guarantee that some moron who doesn't know what spyware/trojans are will bumble along to their site and get themselves hacked.
Boom .. an instant couple of thousand gold for the sellers with zero effort and zero risk.

Hehe someones a little grumpy today? Infest you with trojans and spyware? How would this go about? I'm really curious about this one ^^
Embedded viruses in image files, downloadable executable files, malicious scripting .. so many ways.
Never understimate the stupidity/naivety of some internet gamers who never bother with adequate computer security through the misguided notion that "it'll never happen to me".
And yeah, not grumpy; more.. incredulous that anyone would take a claim from a gold seller spam-mail as the gospel truth.

I checked some of the gold seller sites on Pirates of the Burning Sea a while ago out of curiosity. I found that:
1) The prices they charge are quite a bit higher than merely buying an extra account and getting effectively passive income from the crafting system, and
2) Most of the gold seller sites claimed that they were still selling gold on servers that had shut down several months earlier.
This, of course, leads me to believe that they're scammers, and they're not very good scammers, either.

Sure okay, I can agree that it is possible to use it to spread viruses etc... But tbh I don't see why they would need to... Blizzard themselves make people want to buy gold... Take the generic kobolt player, he needs the best-in-slot on his character, this means the best-in-slot professions too. This takes gold or time. Now assuming that this person has a normal life with job, family etc... This effectivly cuts out the time from the equation leaving just gold. Now for the sake of argument say that blizzard changes the talent setup a little so his class, with his spec needs a new professions. Depending on professions that is between 2-8k gold on my server. Of course you could probably find time for job, family, friends, WoW grinding, WoW raiding etc but I would bet very few does. They would need to cut down on something. But gold selling company XXX is now selling gold for y dollar per z K gold. having the economy for it how many out of 100 players would choose cut down on something over saving the cookie and eating it? To be perfectly honest, I would take the claim about ~700 million gold in stock over ~11 million active subscribers any day. Don't forget to divide the amount of gold per servers in the world. ^^
(As a note, I know several guilds that do their raid picks depending on if the player is kobolt or not so it is quite common)
Where does "need" come into it?
If they can hack into peoples accounts, steal their gold and then resell it to other players, they will do so.
It's cheaper, faster, and much more efficient than levelling up short-lived hunterbots to farm their gold.
As for Blizzard being to blame because they "make people want to buy gold", well that's crap imo.
At level 80 it takes about 90 minutes to make 500g; anyone buying gold is just wasting their money because they don't have the patience to wait a few days and save up. It's daft.

To prove that they are not lying go ahead and buy it all and see if you really get that amount of gold. Please reply once that has been done.
