too many issues with:
wait until more issues are fixed, and there is more than 1 server. this game is amazing, but unless you are a raving fan desperate to get in no matter what, now is not the time to buy.
I haven't been able to play alot due to above issues, but some things I would like to say. the game is hard, the first mobs in the game will kill you, goblin shaman will solo you. I went to loot some player graves I found and while in the process pulled a couple of trolls from miles away who came and killed me pretty instantly. I walked to a nearby town and it took ALONG time, and they are right next to each other on the map. biggest seemless mmo landmass me thinks.
I doubted other people but graphics are better than in videos, character models don't look quite as awful. animations are still an eyesaw, I LOL'd many times watching other people looting. they wave thier hands in thin air like they are techo dancing. my main beef with gameplay is not that I have to disarm to loot, its just that the whole disarm/arm system is confusing and fustrating.
let me explain: you hot key weapons on to your bar, so I say I bind my bow to "2" and sword to "1". when you press 1 it will equip sword, only way to tell is by console text: "you have equiped you etc." press 1 again and it will unequip it.... okay. also with sword it is easy to tell if you have it in your hands because you go to 3rd person. whereas with bow and staff you are always in 1st person and only see your hands hold staff/bow after standing still for a couple of seconds. sound annoying yet?
so when I get jumped and I'm panicing trying to do something on the move like cast a spell i'm all over the shop...
press 2 to equip staff, press R to hold it, press 5 to equip mana missile press LMB cast.... NOTHING. staff was equiped already so I unequiped it and did nothing (no way of telling except reading console). they basically need to go play some first person shooters and take some notes.
can you imagine in say crysis online I press the hotkey for my shotgun twice and it throws it on the floor? or having no icon to see what you have equiped. and not knowing what weapon you having out when you are moving? first person action combat and having to read walls of texts to figure out whether you are in combat or not sucks.
ANYWAY moving on... in some group pve videos everyone is doing the same attack animation, this is because the overhead swing which is best for not hitting allies only has one animation. the horizontal slash actuallly has 4 different animations, considering the overhead was added later they probably did a quick job on animations. I dislike MUCH how different swings are done by going into different modes, why not button A does slash 1 button B does slash 2. why should I have to stance dance just to swing in different directions I want to do different swings on the fly.
they should copy age of chivalry and have left mouse:overhead, right mouse:slash and middle mouse/wheel:stab. that would bring mele up to par. UI can always be bound to a less important button like escape or tab.
thats all I can think of do ask any questions

The icon is on the left side of the screen for what weapon is equipped. lol
I see that sometimes but its doesn't work. trust me I have to read the console to do combat in this game. no doubt I will get used to the current system but it is really terrible from a FPS player's perspective.
My blog:
In before the fanbots go all zealous on your ass.... !
I am glad you said the comment about fighting because its painfully obvious from the videos. I'm really enjoying MB at the moment and you can probably see why Tasos "like" statement makes me very annoyed.
Also sad to know game has client issues. But I suspected from the limited beta and hardware testing that not many machine configurations were tested. Likewise it pretty obvious this paid for trial is a stress test hence the lag/ disconnects. Though if your not in Europe I'd probably expect a bad ping.
In the end I am very worried by the precedence set by this game.
Sounds like a bad interface design. I mean 3-4 actions just to loot a corpse...
And the fanbois are all slowly turning into trolls.
Priceless.
Thanks for info.
Good idea on combat.

Its funny how people who hate Darkfall spend so much time talking about Darkfall.
I guess being a fat troll means having no friends, no girls, and nothing better to do than spew hate on internet forums..
"they wave thier hands in thin air like they are techo dancing"
I resent that statement
How is he a troll, he said the games amazing while pointing out flaws
WOW what kind of reading comprehension do you have?
Bugger I run a AMD 3000 and im fine with it...... Oh 1650 Vid and 2GB ram.
I don't even like PvP but this is RvR and thats all AOK by me.
Want to try DF, although flamed the game a bit before, mainly for Tasos and his dodgy mates form D&L. But heard a lot about interface from hell. One thing i don't want to do is fight with the game. Interface was the reason i quit playing AoC, just couldn't be bothered to constantly put those fracking combos in...
I have played for a week now and i have literally never encountered 1 problem that you listed
ok Buying was Hard that was it. it is your Pre PvP battle get over it.
I run Windows 7 Beta software 64 bit and i installed and played No Problem. Not 1.
The queue I live in Florida im NA and at most i wait to get in is 20 mins this hour shit is a Lie. unless you keep refreshing your Q and putting ur self to the end of the line constantly like a Noob.
Again i live in Florida and my ping is always 80 The highest Ping i got was in a 60 vs 60 battle and that was 140 ping.

this is is you loot a coprse after a fight...
Hit the "R" button to sheath your weapon.
Hit the "F" button to open the enemies loot box
click and drag the loot you want to your backpack .
bro if that's too hard for you then double check your shoe laces before walking...actually I have a feeling your a velcro kind of guy
This only goes to show you that if you purchase this game, you will not only lose money but time you can not recieve back due to a poor development crew, lack of knowledge on what MMO's want, and not striving to be the best. Why go into a battle knowing your going to lose? Darkfall could of been great, but will fall short of its goals.
Please, don't give credibility to some fans' misguided belief that "being critical = trolling", because the two are not the same. Not even close.
What I'm seeing is that, at least for one person, the tint is fading from the rose glasses of "hype" and "high expectations", and they're starting to see the game objectively - warts and all.
This is a Good Thing.
Also, Consensus makes some *very* good points and suggestions and presents them in a very coherent, reasonable and constructive way.
That is exactly the kind of feedback and support (yes, support) AV needs for this game.
And, in my opinion, if the fans truly want to see the game get better and maintain a healthy population (niche or otherwise), they should follow Consnsus' example and do the same.
Of course, I know there are a number who won't. The rose-colored glasses are there to stay. There's a few right in this thread who are slamming him for his critiques. Pretty bad when fans are so quick to turn on their own.

uggh.. Ok,
1. You are basicly complaining that a new game requires some getting used to.
2. You make it sound really difficut, but really it aint. Honestly.
3. You can simply change slash - chop by pressing T wow it aint too hard is it?
4. there is an ICON for your EQUIPED weapon. It goes GREEN when you have it unsheathed.
5. Why are todays generation almost incapable of "problem solving" and by that I mean - Hmm how does this work, Ohh I see if I do this and this, that happens. Why must all new games conform to a "standard interface"?
6. Sum up. You are advising people not to buy something because you dislike the interface, 90% of you post was about the interface.

thats my honest advice for the now. I want my friends to play DF with me but no way am I going to recomend this game to anyone at the moment. I'm going to let my friend have a go on my account, see if it works.
yes some people the game works fine, but read the official forums many people are having shit loads of issues. and there is no customer support. some people bought the game over a week ago and haven't been able to play.
so like I say in OP, do not buy yet unless you are desperate.

So you only read the title, decided he's trolling and didn't bother to read the rest of his post?
Consensus goes on to say in his post, "Do not buy at this time" and then lists the reasons why he feels it's not ready yet - except for those who simply cannot wait to play.
Consensus bought the game and has played it. He noted many of its good points and also noted some of its shortcomings. He's not trolling. He's giving an objective opinion. Of course, I realize that for some here whose motto is "Either praise DF 100%, or you're a troll", objectivity is an alien concept.
But I suppose none of that matters, right? Because he wasn't all-out cheer-leading for the game, he's immediately slammed.

Yes, if you are 'allergic' to queues then you might as well wait a while until the devs correct that stuff. Or until they set up a new damn server!
Unlike the OP, however, I have'nt experienced ANY client issues, and the only people I've heard experiencing them have either integrated vid cards or an 8800... have been a lot of problems for people w/ 8800s. Hope they sort them out for you all.

Well, my pay check came in early(at my request)and I bought DF on impulse, so I can finally say how the game is. As for your problems, it simply takes adjusting, but I'll admit interface is awful. UI is the first noticeable flaw when you start, as you're just standing around motionless(with someone trying to kill you or not) and without a clue. But after the first two hours, I got completely used to it and can fight/equip/loot/chat/bank fairly quickly.
Another issue I had that broke immersion a bit was that the blood spatter was delayed(when you hit someone they start bleeding 2 seconds afterwards), seems like a minor issue, but it's just one of those annoyances that keeps poking at you constantly. Another gripe is that when weather/time of day changes, it does it instantly. Don't get me wrong, there's progression, but it's only there to transition for five seconds into the next day cycle. You do forget about the graphics and animations after awhile, that's certain, at first I thought the character models were absolutely garbage. Now, as I know how to play, I don't really notice the characters but am too focused on the game, it's a refreshing and welcomed feeling.
My first day in Darkfall was a bit different than others, I wasn't ganked once. No one attacked me that I didn't attack, in fact, everyone helped me. The players seemed to all have an understanding with each other and worked together towards a peaceful starting area. If there was a ganker they'd quickly dispatch him and move on with their tasks, it was relieving to see. I did get my taste of PvP, though, as the first 10 minutes of gameplay is when you're an unstable madman. I simply ran out into the wilderness and found a group of 3 dwarves and one human, alarmed by their unsheathed weapons I started to attack them, turns out they were mining. They quickly got rid of me, without harassment or any kind of insult, sometimes nothing is better. It was a learning experience that didn't come with much penalty as I didn't have anything of value, needless to say, it was still fun. The community still has children/childish adults, but there are a lot of mature oriented clans out there waiting for players like you, so join up . The game is flawed but fun, simply put.
I like the game, but if some of you that play Darkfall hate it, I can see why. By the way, I'm situated in Indiana and my ping settled around 160. Hope I helped!

6. Sum up. You are advising people not to buy something because you dislike the interface, 90% of you post was about the interface.
The interface in a game is "where the rubber meets the road" in terms of playing it. If the interface is clunky and unintuitive (saying "just get used to it" is a cop-out, not a solution) then that is a significant thing to complain about.
A good interface is as transparent as possible and empowers the player. It gets "out of the way" so you can focus on playing the game. You shouldn't have to fuss over making sure the button you're pressing is doing what it's supposed to, with no easily identifiable way of knowing, beside reading text in a chat log. If they're having to look at the chat-log to make sure they have the right weapon equipped, then they're not looking at the fight in front of them. They're not fighting another player, or some pissed-off mob - they're fighting the game itself. That is not intuitive design.
And I'm not "making this up". There's tons of research that's been done on this topic, and many books and even college courses about it. Find a book or some articles on interface design and you'll see it all there.
So, yes, if the interface is at all clunky and unintuitive, then it certainly should be revisited and improved.
And finally, if people here seriously think the interface is "perfect" and AV got it right the first time... think of it this way... There are myriad software apps out there whose developers are continuously improving, streamlining and making their interfaces more intuitive. Lightwave 3D has gone through several changes, 3DSMax continuously has its interface improved... and so on. If those companies are still finding ways to improve the interfaces for their applications, then how do you seriously believe that an indie developer got it right the first time?
And don't tell me "lol they're not games". It doesn't matter. An intuitive interface isn't limited to application software. It applies to *anything* that requires user interaction.... Games, programs, websites, kiosks... you name it.
