So I read that review/preveiw of WoW and it sounds like more of a review of MMORPGs as a whole than what WoW is. I mean it seems he had difficulty reveiwing WoW without mentioning every other damn game he's played!  I find considerable issue with almost all of that review. The sound is only adequite? The music is amazing. The night elf lands have a beautiful bg music and Origrimmar is also good. Sandwich combat? Uh when I just hit auto attack against a mob I died. I agree that CoH and SWG have raised the bar on customization and I do believe WoW will come through. But seriously, reading that I wondered if he actually palyed the game.

Ah well, I guess I probably don't know what I'm talking about which means I'll never write a review here. Oh wait.......

I would have to agree with the majority here about the fact that the person who reviewed err I mean Previewed  this game probably hardly played it... How else can you explain the reason why he omitted perhaps one of the most important and intricate parts of WOW and all Blizard games for that matter (PVP)...

PVP is a major part of WOW, this would be like previewing COH and not talking about the character creator. Perhaps the orignial "Previewer" would be so kind enough as to tell us why he decided not to talk about such a big part of WOW in his preview....

You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

for creadibility purposes.  who would u pick if you needed a heart operation?

    A. The Doctor that has like 43 pages of heart surgery experience, 3 years of service under the Queen of England, 8 years of service with the presidency, and head of the operation unit at the hospital.

    or

    B.  Some kid who just got out of residency and fresh out of college with maybe 1 appendix operation?

There's a reason why he mentioned those other mmorpgs.  mostly for credibility --> he knows from experience, and because WoW looks like every other mmorpg just more brighter graphics.

One of the things that really struck me was his comment about "sandwich" combat.

I dont know what level he was or what level mob he was fighting, but generaly when I fought mobs they were 1-3 levels higher than me.  If I did what he mentioned, just hit auto attack and walk away, I would have died every single time.  To survive a fight with a mob a higher level than you its pretty much 99% reaquired to use your abilities to survive.  Imagine a rogue just going up to a mob +2 from his/her level and just hitting with daggers, or a mage fighting with his staff, even warriors need to use their abilities to deal a little more damage to take the mob before they die.  Makes me wonder about some of the other stuff he said too.

I will only respond to what was posted as the topic of quote from the review.

    <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

That statement quoted is a simpleton, shallow, way of looking at the game-play of WoW.

The game-play is intuitive, and because it is intuitive without having to have a physics degree to understand or get immersed in, it seems simpler to understand and enjoy compared to some counterparts in the same genre. . .

Also, a major flaw in that statement is not putting it into context with WHY its important to be able to level it seems. . .the high-end content includes heroic PvP battles and initiatives, right?  Blizzard will hopefully soften the leveling curve of WoW, as they have done, and place players on a more even playing field in terms of growth sooner rather than having to invest a year in game-play only to always being out-gunned by the hard-core gamers in terms of time investment.  So it seems that this initiative by Blizzard, if it carries over to gold, benefits the hybrid PvE/PvP nature of the game that players of a hybrid PvE/PvP mmorpg have screamed for in the past. . .just seems that Blizzard listened. . .maybe.

Mentioning is not the issue, it just seems like the review was WoW vs MMORPGs. Blizzard is good but do they have to revolutionize whatever genre they enter? Yes WoW isn't really breaking the mold with graphics but I look at more that Blizzard wants anyone to be able to play the game. I mean EQ2 has some pretty graphics but I doubt my comp can run it and I am not gonna spen $100+ on a new video card to play a game. And also I don't understand the whole "Sandwich Combat" thing, when I played (granted it was only to 25) I had to use my abilities to win.

I've played other MMORPGs as well and I think WoW is a step in the right direction rather than a step back like others.

I think the review is well done and truthful. He admits that these are his opinions, so if you don't agree that's ok. To be truthful, I'm new to the MMORPG genre. I mean I've played most of them out there but I've never subscribed for more than a month. All in all, I think I will be a huge fan of the game, and the fact that it brings nothing new to the genre doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'll be playing the most solid MMORPG to date in a world I've loved since the early 90s

"I have noticed with most if not all of the MMO's during beta the game is much easier to level and gain skills than after release."  - Dumin

Unfortunately not too many people realize this, and it is generally true about all games that go through a beta phase.  I'm sure they allow the increased pace of things so the customers can get a taste of as much as possible, it will help Blizzard develop high end content and features etc., by the input of the higher leveled players. imageBlizzard seems to be the best company so far to take into account what their customers want and prefer, they actually take suggestions and ideas into consideration and often implement them.  I would have been happy if it was released post-stress test lol, so I know Im going to be blown away on release, not to mention they plan to keeping adding things after the game is out.image
