The worst thing was the bad communication by FC. It really made a bad impression from the beta and forward.

Strange that none have been mentioning the way your character moved in. You felt like a toothpick moving around. This is always a sign of bad coding or an old game engine. It was confirmed that AoC game engine was just an updated Anarchy Online engine.

The fundamental blocks of the engine was corrupt, and you had to be very disillusioned to believe that this was ever going to change in the Beta or later.

Some things is too late to change, and I am sorry but AoC will never be able to turn around completely. They might get back some subscribers if they do things the right way, but will never have the right fundamental for competing among the top MMo's.

Maybe it's something AoC was supposed to have like DX10 or Drunken Brawling? Maybe it's something AoC has but is not working the way you would hope.

I returned to AOC last month greatly impressed with all the bugs they fixed. The new team running the show there seems to have heard all the angry players from back around launch durring Conans mass "exodus".

I disagree with the OP's dislike for the combat as AOC has the best combat system bar none over all other MMO's. I am so tired of the same lame combat system almost every MMO seems to follow (with exceptions like EVE of course). AOC combat seems more physical, more player skill then some uber elite item. No matter what item you have no way promises a victory in combat. It's how you play.

I love the realistic graphic style. I HATE anime cartoony graphics like WoW LOTRO War (no insult to those games, just not for my taste)

No AOC isn't perfect. My biggest dislike is the instances. I also would like to see more VARIATY in items. I just hope they don't make 1 super item everyone uses because it's the "best" in game. I hope they make their new item changes so people can use different looking items to get a more custom character (Kudos to City of Heroes/Villians for being the MMO with the best character custimization out of any MMO).

AOC has some big changes coming and if you ever thought this game had potential, I advise to take another look. Start with trolling their forums like I did. I resubbed because on their forums people overall seem pleased with the games direction now.

Feel free to read my past posts as I was very negative of Funcom when AOC released (I left a few months after launch), but I say good work to them in working hard to fix a game that should never been released when it was.

1° INSTANCED world. hate that. (can't play instanced worlds like AOC or EQ2)

2° Itemization is a joke (I never play for stuff but in AOC it's really a joke, even for casual players like me ^^)

3° farming for money, for craft (a PAIN to earn enough money to buy a horse. A PAIN)

The combat engine and items were the largest let down for me. When we found out that your stats and items did nothing and that most of the skills were just for show I gave up.

Waiting on the item patch to see if I will continue my resub.

The community manager is also a very big downfall of the game. I dont understand how he got popular. None of the community programs ever seem to go anywhere.

After playing last week every thing was still a big disappointment, the only thing that was not was the graphics.

Though it goes to show that people prefer game play to graphics going by how much the population fell.

Funcom has reviewed all of its assets relevant for
impairment testing. This process has led to
recognition of an impairment loss of around
3,1 MUSD for Age of Conan due to a decrease in
numbers of subscribers for the game. Funcom Q4 10 report.

    Worst: Instancing

    Best: The overall game itself

My biggest dissapointment was the lack of players. That is not really the games fault as in the case of VG ,this game is pretty decent and deserves IMO more player sthan WOW by a long shot.I would not play WOW again if you paid my subs so that pretty much tells how i feel about the two games.

AOC is one of the few games that i can narrow my dislikes down to a small set of complaints.Heck even my fave game FFXI,i could probably write a novel on things i would change lmao.

First of all the beginning was totally linear,it was not a big deal to me anyhow, because it was still a nice beginning to the game and was only for a short stint,to get me to my first town of Tortage.Too bad,i really do not think it would take too much to fix up the beginning, maybe a couple weeks of work.

After that i was enjoying myself albeit most of the time solo.Even when i joined with a couple others i never felt like the game has any true party mechanics, but i never did enough of it to give an honest answer. The drops in the game need to be a lot better, and i mean A LOT better.Crafting?i am big on crafting and yet i saw nothing of it while i was in Tortage, that would be a big dissapointment to say the least ,if there is no crafting in a MMORPG.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

My biggest disappointment with AoC was the shape(bugs, memory leaks, glitches, lag spikes, etc, etc, etc) in which Funcom launched the game.  I have resubbed a couple times since launch and found the gameplay after Tortage shallow and the content lacking at certain lvls, but with most of the game-breaking bugs fixed.  With that being said, I think/hear AoC is finally in launch condition and I am waiting on the "win-back" program to give it a final shot.

My Biggest disapointment was the instanced world! I hated not being able to actually adventure around and mess with monsters in open plains, or fight enemies on a hilltop and then go miles away and fight them near a river seemlessly.

I hated the fact their was no feeder quests, you wasted ages hunting aorund and when I hit level 36 I was stuck, no quests I could solo were left and the solos quests I had were way to difficult. It just stopped being fun.
The crafting was also a pain, you had to go to a set area to learn and do most of your resource gathering.
I guess the most disapointing aspect was that you can see the potential, in here is an awesome game waiting to break out, if only it had kept up the standard I for one would still be playing.

Completely Agree with this. To add, getting to about level 35 and up No polish, no content, bottlenecking of leveling etc. I kept wondering what happened to the game, it's like it just...ended in the mid thirties.

Tortage was one of the greatest moments of Age of Conan.  We really thought the game was going to be like this all the way through.

The worst parts of Age of Conan?

Tortage.  Wait, you mean that with these 3 other alts I have to do the same thing over again with slight variations?  ugh!

    1. Tortage.

    2. Small World.  I remember getting to the main land and looking at the map.  I was shocked.  I thought it was so huge and was so impressed with how much stuff I will have to do.  Then after about 10 minutes of talking to people in chat, I realized that the 3 lands that were highlighted were the only areas we would be visiting.  I , again, was shocked.

    3. Instance world.  Nothing is worst than playing a game that is just a huge instance and still pay $15 a month for it.  Can't I just log into GW for free and get a similar experience?

    4. The quests in the mainland.  The quests just sucked.  After playing WoW I thought we couldn't get any more worst....but you can! Rinse and repeat over and over.

    5. Exploration.  Lack of rather.  Everything looked the same like a barren.

Age of Conan brought a lot the the table, but unfortunately most of it did not translate over well or we were just simply lied to. I kept my expectations down at least until the beta. The open beta was great. Tortage the first time through was a great MMO experience. Basically what it came down to is that Age of Conan was an unfinished game. The $15 monthly payment hits hard for a game in such a condition.

I quit 3 weeks after launch.  Got my main toon up to only lvl 17.  I just didnt get "into" it.  The game didnt capture my attention/passion like it should have.

    Nothing but quests.

Funcom's previous product had so many other things to do such as:

    Pocketbosses

Blitzing missions for whatever items you need

Randomly generated solo and team missions

Org-owned PvP territories that gave your org stat bonuses

--and all the toons you had to max out at specific levels to defend/attack them

Building new implantssymbiants builds and NCU belts (gawd how much time did I spend upgrading those things)

    Over-Equipping equipment (an artform  really)

Alien raids (yes, AoC need to have an expansion pack for this item to be comparable)

I'm not creative enough to have a signature

You can easily earn 1 gold by lvl 40 to buy a horse (25silver for riding book,75silver for horse).

Not sure why it was so painful for you.

    Lack of content

but thats largely been addressed now under 80

I'll be giving AOC another try in the future

The instancing. Yeah, instancing is important  for dungeons and such, but the whole damn world is instanced.  I remember that feeling when in a tavern in a town trying to meet up with a friend who was insisting he was right next to me in the tavern, and asking around finally realized just how instanced the world was.  It made a small world so much more smaller.

You can now. First couple of months would take til about level 50-55 to earn enough (without spending all your time grinding for g) to get a horse.

I think my biggest issues with the game for starters was the over instancing of the overworld.   It really dimished the immersion and made building a city seem less satisfying.  The lack of content between 50-70 was like slamming into a wall at 75MPH.  Finally, they allowed such rampant exploiting of their raid content to go unpunished, which completely ruins the integrity of the game, especially on PvP servers which are naturally more competitive.

Disagree you can add up quest reward $$ to level 40 and it will come out more than price for a horse since release. This site might help. No grind just quests and I had one at level 44 with gear brought too. I think maybe people didn't get to see all of AoC's places at launch because of the fast travel guys not offering places before. In beta you could get the money by level 30 and they modified things on that feedback. But you know we live in a mmorpg society where people want everything right away for free these days.

As for the instances and Zones, if I was prone to disliking this set up I would of read the main FAQ on the community website put up 3 years before release which told us exactly how it would be.

  • beaverzbeaverz Member Posts: 660

The worst thing at launch was that it really felt as if this game was still in beta, there were bugs that are usually exterminated during the first days of alpha. It really felt as if FC was making fun of mmorpg gamers by making them pay for an beta.

THe owrst is that people dont learn since the exact same thing is happening with DF.
