Hey all! When I was getting together my PC I had asked MMO forums for some advice and the community was very helpful, so figure I'll give the card a shot as well.
Now I have a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS which has worked well for me in the past, always liked Nvidia..but it's really fallen behind these days. I once got around 100 fps in WoW(lolz) on highest settings and with all the changes over time I've dropped to about 40ish? Depending on where I am, but the performance is far too laggy and this is based on lowest settings possible. I recently got into EQ2 and with lowest settings I can get around 10-20fps, it's really quite painful. =
So my rant aside, what I'd really like to know is should I go for the 200 series or will the 9800/8800 work fine? Truthfully I'd rather play EQ2 and WoW on highest settings without the choppy performance and don't mind spending a bit more for it, just wondering if maybe it's a bit unnecessary based on what I've heard about the 9800.
Well, would really be grateful for any advice or opinions you guys could give me towards this! Thanks!

The 8800GT, 9800GT, and GTS250 are all the same cards. The only difference is the GTS250 is fabbed on a smaller die making it consume less energy and create less heat
I would aim at getting a GTS250 if you cannot get a GTX260 or above.
Note that you can get a Gainward GTS 250 1GB for the same price as a 9800GTX+ (pretty much same performance, smaller card, runs cooler and the 1gb is something good for the future / some games actually use this :P)
buy a 260. I got the 260 216 when it came out and have been thoroghly mind fucked on what Ive been missing all these years.. 8800/4850's are a great generation, but once you take the step up to a 260, you will never look back.
With the 260 you are certainly future proofing aswell. When the time comes that you do need to upgrade, you can just buy another 260 and run them sli. When that time comes, the 260 will cost less than 100 bucks.
and yes, the 260 will handle anything on max. Certainly any mmo
make sure you have a full tower. These cards are huge. I find no problems with heat running AoC. I do have 6 case fans though.
9800 is more than fine for WoW, in fact it's probably overkill.
Playing - FFXIV, ESO
Played - FFXI, WoW, Lineage 2, Guild Wars, Aion, SWToR, LotRO, GW2, TERA, Rift, ArcheAge, TSW
Well apart from a cell phone is overkill for WoW :P
Okay, okay /Anti-WoWJab
Anyways, the 9800GTX would be more than enough for WoW.

I just bought a GTX260 core 216 and I'm waiting like a kid at Christmas for it to show up. Is there any trouble putting this on a 680i LT board?
Right now the graphics cards are practically in freefall as far as price. I just got a ATI 4870 for 160 bucks! I mean holy crap thats cheap for what I got. Personally if your going Nvidia Id say go for the 260. Beautiful cards! I just went with ATI because I use AMD chips and they play nice together. These are truly awesome days for gaming!
Thanks so much to everyone! Exactly the replies I was hoping for, really have helped a lot.
I was really considering a 260 myself, They're popular and as someone else stated, affordable. One last concern though, and a friend of mine brought this up..
Power supply..My friend has a 250w? Not sure, but said they couldn't get a new card until they upgraded that, I'm not sure if I might be stuck in the same situation. Checked my supply on the papers, it's a 450w AMD supply. Nvidia 250 recommends a minimum of 450w and for the 260 it's 500w. Not sure if this will prove to be an issue for me as well.
Thank you again!
WOW .. dude LOOK somewhere else.. dont ask here. The 2nd post should have been your 1st warning. Try forums that KNOW about nv cards. A simple search gets www nvnews net try their forums. A 260 gonna cost you $175. A gts250 $130. Agtx9800 $124. 8800gts $104. But a newer 250 is coming and will be faster.. anyway.. this should help. I would go with 200's or 9800 at the least. Just make sure you can RETURN the card if you dont like it.
Uhm, dude a 9800GT *is* a rebranded 8800GT (and *NOT* an 8800GTS or 9800GTX as you seem to imply with your price comparisons). Cleffy is right about the rebranded cards you just have to be careful about the GT/GTX/GTS, which you're mixing up. The GTS 240 is the rebranded 9800GT/8800GT though. The GTS250 is actually a 9800GTX+ (which as you said is $6 price diff - because it's the same card). The real problem is nvidia is confusing with their bullshit naming scheme.. I mean, reusing the same chip in 3 different 'generations'? wtf is that...

i as well have a nForce 680i LT motherboard. currently i have a 9600GT 512MB graphics card hooked onto my PCI-e slot. this card is 9inches long. all the newer cards nowadays are either up to 10inches long or 10.5inches long. my 9600GT fits well in my case/board. but now if i want to upgrade to one of these longer cards there are some connection components, some wireing connections onto the motherboard that may get in the way, so im not sure if it will actually work. dont get me wrong, i do have enough room in my case to fit these 10.5inch cards just looks some of the components may get in the way because of the length. but the GTX260 in particular is 10.5inches long. if anyone thats out there that does have a 680i LT motherboard and has been able to install these new cards with no probs...please let us know or tell us what you did to be able to install them.
Thanks
just an update. i was looking through some nVidia alliliate companies. and it seems BFG Tech has a possibility of making smaller cards. Was just looking at some GTS250 specs online and one site i found says this BFG Tech card in particular is 9 inches in leng. My 9600GT is 9inches in lenth as well and it fits perfectly on my motherboard with no components in the way. If anyone else can confirm this, ill highly appreciate it. I am wanting to upgrade my card so i can run everything i throw at it on high settings. this is the site i found it on www.legitreviews.com/article/913/1/
