i finally registered. it's patching an hour download. is this normal? I've downloaded larger games faster.
is there an alternate mirror i can do this?

Ya know ... i have heard of people taking hours to download and patch the game. Honestly I have done fresh installs + initial patchs on new machines and it never took more than 4-5 hours tops.
This game does have a lot of files. Just checking my computer ...
FFXI: 40k + Files
LotRO 127 (really? 127?) Files
WoW: 1400 + FIles
WAR : 600+ Files
When the game updates it check each individual file. If there is something wrong with the file (i.e. you .dat swapped or there is a currupt file) the updater will put it on the list and the downlaod and then deploy. This does take time (even more if you fuck around with your files). It isn't like say how WoW does it where there are 50 or so files that are patched up and Blizzard is only giving you the update for those few files and that is the end of that patch (and by the way have you ever had to get multiple patches at once for WoW ... that is freaking brutal) It is an integirty check on top of the update.
