I was at this fight on the defending side. Trust me there were defenders... but we were outnumbered something like 5:1. ................... It was an interesting night that's for sure, considering the battle lasted from 12:00am until 6:00am on a weekday...

Wow sounds like so much fun, outnumbered 5 to 1 and it took the attackers over 6 hours to defeat you?
That is some really broken game mechanics.
5 to 1 numerical advantage even in real life they should have rolled over you especially since the cities DON'T HAVE FRIGGING GATES so how did you keep them out?
I guess it is just human nature to exaggerate when losing, there is no way to hold against bigger army if city has no gates, so it seems it was like 2:1 at best.
Only other way i see to hold your ground in 5:1 is that those outnumbered was supreme macroers and played 24/7 for weeks, so now their are pretty strong...
So in a "skill" based game they are basically a higher LEVEL then the attackers so they could defend better.
Works for me since "skill based" is just another way to hide leveling up, in fact the 5 levels in this game....0-24, 25-49, 50-74, 75-99, 100.
I just see a game that has the graphics of over 10 years old and a poor art style that attracts noone who has taste. Like i just think why would anyone want to invest in a world that is more boring than our own? Like I can have more fun watching the chips i put in the Oven cook.
No kidding. These RPG fanbois obviously missed every awesome MMO and strategic FPS that has came out over the last 15 years. This battle here was nothing but a zerg, cookie cutter characters all using the same weapon with nothing cool ever taking place. A trained monkey could have been useful in that fight.

The siege timer is 6 hours. It's there so that instant city destruction can't take place. I mean, you can always go in and kill everyone, but you can't take over a city just willy nilly on the spot.
So, the attackers initiate the siege, and then there is a phase where the attackers' city is vulnerable to destruction for 3 hours. Once that time is over, the defender's city becomes vulnerable to destruction for 3 hours.
It takes most of those three hours to destroy a city at the moment, since all anyone is using are siege hammers... once people get warhulks, it's gonna be another story.

No it wasn't 5 to 1. Just 3 to 1 (I'm a VG member). And they couldn't beat us faster on account of some game mechanics. Alas AV have changed things since so if that siege would happen right now it could result much worse consequences for us. Hope we are now more prepared though...

sounds to me like you're both talking about WOW.
WOW has boxes for heads and gameplay that essentially consists of picking up sticks while some guy keeps throwing more sticks on the ground. everybody ends up with the exact same armour & weapon sets until they get dumped with more sticks to pick up at which point all their current shit is worthless. hmmm... great game.....
doesn't seem to affect its popularity nor people's "enjoyment" of it...
