I hope this MMO dose not follow WoW...

I just hope that OLD REPUBLIC dose not follow WoW game play. OK first thing before I go any further. What is the official abbreviation in reference for OLD REPUBLIC? is it NOTOR?? or ST:TOR??? pleas clarify. Anyways I hope the BIOWARE have enought since NOT to make this a Star Wars WoW clone. That would totaly destroy this game. I can not see going on Raids or running DUNGEONS for that matter what kind of dungeon content would there be in for the OLD REPUBLIC?? I can maybe see perhaps a ASTEROID dungeon perhaps where you get a quest to go to some asteroid and you have to fight mobs there with the only way to complete it via party. Lol I don't know? Me and my imagination. I see this game more for SOLOING then anything?? But then again it seems that Star Wars is based on questing in a way that ones would have to help each other to meet their goal. It should be interesting to say the least. I just hope it dose not become a FPS game also. Considering that most Star Wars games are FPS. After all that is what I see in the first playable race Bounty Hunter. That seems to me could be your TANK class??

OK to sum it up. Yes Bounty Hunter a tank class. JEDI a MAGE class oh no it is starting to sound like WoW....

I hope not.

If you want to put it in terms of WoW or actually in terms of RPG's (Mages etc. are not created by WoW or Blizzard) then I'd say the BH is a DPS'er as they like to call it.

Then again, I would not speculate so much with the lack of info we have right now.

  • todeswulftodeswulf Member Posts: 715

Actually the way they are talking it's going to follow LOTRO more.  Scripted story line cut scenes and you will have a NPC henchman to help you out of Tough places ..yeah LOTRO dosen't have those yet but DDO does...so less Blizzard more Turbine.

I don't understand why you think SWTOR will be like WOW any more than any other game, alot of MMO's are like this. Are you suggesting they create a game more like EVE?  As far as I can tell Bioware are trying to make a game that feals like the films which would mean huge story lines and probably alot of group quests, I can't see how they can make the game play at least a little like WOW or LOTRO.

  • RakujiRakuji Member UncommonPosts: 144

This is just my opinion but i think when he refers to wow he means is the whole game gonna be soloable by any class just like wow. and only take about a week and a half of casual gaming to have max level and end game gear.

I have to say NO. It will be nothing like anything we have ever played. It's suppose to have 100 hours + of story line for each class. Most of the game I assume will be soloplay until your story interlocks with another class so to speak and then its group time. But from what the trailers look like the only simularity to any of the other games out there will probably be the wsad walking format of course and probably auto attack and skills. Which all come from EQ imo. Will be a Super easy WoW clone or will be an adventurous compelling story and depth like EQ only time will tell.

"when i say story in terms of eq, I mean you created your own story as you were not restricted to follow the Yellow Question marks above npc heads, because you know when you see them now you are like a moth to the flame."

I think Each company catches thier thunder for 1 game and 1 game only. And I think its time for Bioware to Shine.

Yes, it would be really horrible if TOR followed WOW with their huge number of players and transformed the entire industry. That would just be so tragic.

    Changed the industry how?

Yeah it brought a massive influx of potential customers into the industry, but it also inspired several other companies to rip off its basic concept, causing a surge in WoW-cloned games.

As for the game, its far from WoW already.

It completely focuses on just you, you get npc allies, and you can solo the game most likely, more like Guild Wars if you ask me.

Yes yes, WOW is the best thing since Christmas and its the only MMO worth playing. Dont  you have some dailys to grind or something?

Bioware do their own things and to be honest have Blizzard ripped a few things from Baldurs gate to Wow anyways.

But don't worry that it will be to close to Wow. If Bioware actually  can pull of a great MMO is still not certain but they never been so much for ripping other companys off.

I am intrested how the AI will be, will mobs use a similar aggro system they use in EQ or Wow? Or maybe something more like GW where mobs try to kill of the easiest oponent first?

Woah, ok which World of Warcraft are you playing? Last time I checked, there is no way someone that is gaming casually even for 10-11 days could reach max level with end game gear.

I hate it when people make comments like this, honestly if a game took a week and a half of casual play to reach max level it would not have 11 million people subscribed to it.

Im not saying its hard to level in WoW, im just saying its not as easy as this "One and a half week" crap.

Ok, well ever heard of an exaderation? No you may not get all end game gear but you can easly go from 1-80 in about a week and a half 2 weeks top. I work from home and have done it. That is why I don't play WoW it is kiddie mode. And that is why it has so many subscribers because newbs like it handed to them on a silver platter like it is in WoW. Seriously WoW is easy mode.  Don't get me wrong WoW is fun for about 3 months. Then BC came out then it was ok for another month quit boring actually. Then Wrath of the Lich King came out  and it was awsome for about a month. Then you get End Game and its the same old boring grinding Honor, or Arena Points or simplistic raids that a 5yr old could pwn. But if WoW has paved the way for future MMOs then well we are all doomed and will all end up playing WoW for ever. Because the rest of the games will try and mimic something that can't be mimiced.

And So i Don't have to post again about exaderations or sarcasim.

"Thank you WoW for making all future Gaming Easy Mode. So we will never get a feel of accomplishment. Or Ever feel that Our classes are really needed unless we are Tanks or Healers and the rest of us just be known as Fillers that have no real role besides clicking buttons."

Unfortunally As I do work from home I do need something to do while working. So, I hope and pray that this game is as awsome as I hope it will be. That way I don't have to go back and be bored on SWG, EQ II, WoW or Lotro. Oh ya, WoW has 25 Million subscribers most more than half of those are asian and when Chinese Ban the Playing of WoW it will lose half of its Gold Farming Population.

I dunno you could be right and i could just be really picky. I just compare all games I play to the epic feeling I had when I played EQ in its prime. Would still play if it wasnt a ghost town and SoE didn't royaly screw it with that retarded card game and micro transactions. But, I have yet to find another game that could produce the love, accomplishment and satisfaction I felt for my character and the quests I completed.

Ya, Anyone could camp a mob for hours and then kill it, ya anyone could put together a guild and your way up through the raid ladder.  LOL Who am I kidding NOT everyone can do that. People will say well anyone can do that. BS they have the possibilty to do that. But why would they work for something when they can have it handed to them after walking 5 ft in front of them, kil 15 mobs and turn around and hand in the quest. Bam here is your Close to epic item.  Thats alot of effort let me tell you what. You want a ba Item in EQ you killed 100s of mobs hoping it dropped.

I could go on but I don't wanna grip at all you guys sorry. I could delete it and just ignore but Thats what the FORUMs are for Right? I gotta work tomarrow so I will be back to get under the WoW fanboi skins tomarrow lol. Call me what you will thats fine.

i dislike people that try to speculate on what a game is or isnt going to be. a vast majority of the time it leads to something completely absurd or something to do with WoW. if you cant thnk of anything more original than that, then please dont post. noone wants to read another "omg is this going to be another WoW clone" post.

also when i read the word "clone" i think of something that is made from something else and they both look exactly the same. so based on what i think, no game can be a clone of another game or they all would look the same.

If you go to the website the description of the game is written just like WoW:

Now, tensions between the Republic and the Empire are running high, and a series of border skirmishes and proxy wars have broken out, even on planets as historically peaceful as Alderaan. The uneasy truce established by the Treaty of Coruscant is quickly tearing apart at the seams, and a return to all-out war has begun in all but official terms.

Just like WoW said it. Border skirmishes tensions in WSG blah blah blah..So yeah, the game is already WoW Wars: TOR, unfortunately. So there is no WAR, its going to be another single player game like WoW; all about your gear, your story ect.

In order for it to be a Star Wars game, it would require someone to think outside the box and use a bit of creativity for an IP that would draw a lot of players on the name alone, but sadly, I do not see that happening. A Star Wars game, if done right, could draw in and appeal to the masses both PVE and PVP players could coexist in. Satr Wars in this time line should still feature a war hence the name: Star Wars..What they are proposing is "Star Border Skirmishes Cause we Don't Want  to Throw The Galaxy into War." or WoW Wars. So PVP is capture the flag games in an instance?

    Sith Empire Vs Republic...

PVE quests can be more than killing 20 boars for a weapon. How about making PVE quests as a means towards the war effort. PVE unlocks some PVP. That way both are contributing and both the PVE and PVP players can get eaqually good personal rewards as well as helping the side they're on.

Make planets contain general and specific resourses. So if the Sith controll a planet and the republic takes it, with it they get the general and specific resourses. In other words, now missions can pay out 30K credits as before they paid out 20 because they now have more resourses at their disposal. same for specific ones like  tibana gas for instance. Now wepon crafters or whatever get a bonus or something to make holding the planet worth while, and losing it a problem.

In order to take a planet have controll points that work like WoWhammer's RVR *cough* individual vs individual PVP lakes. BUT... make it so the PVErs have a role to play. For example have an instance that must be done to bring down the sheilds or automated defenses for a base, that allows the pvp assult to begin..whateve... Just something..Make it Star Wars.

Star Wars was about the Hero's journey, but the hero didn't do it alone. Promote team play as it is supposed to be an MMO, make it rewarding to fight for your chosen faction only then can it be Star Wars in application as it is in name.

Passing judgement on a game that's at least a good year from release...?

I think it's too soon to make any comparisons between TOR (<-- this for the acronym, I think) and any other MMO.  The only thing we can look at to get an idea of what TOR might be like is KOTOR 1 and, to a lesser extent, KOTOR 2.  I do expect that soloable content will be quite high.  The game will give players some backup already with the companion characters, and Bioware has been making single-player RPG games for a long time now, so they may lean in that direction with TOR.  That doesn't mean it'll be anything like WoW though, and I'm sure they'll try to get a lot of grouping in the game.  I expect quests in TOR to be more involved and have better stories than in other MMORPGs including WoW.  Not so much of the "we're cold and need bear furs, go kill 20 bears" variety.  I hate those.

I see something like that happening in game. It happens in all MMO's with PvE as the main game. That is funny though.

It seems to be a single player RPG first with trying to have a very good and deep story driven game. It will have the MMO grouping thrown in just to make it a MMO. It sounds like it will be different enough from WoW.

WoW has very little story that is followed by anyone. It is just a bunch of ? and when you run out, you move on to the next area with more ?. Then in the end you run through 100's of hoops till you get what you want. SW:TOR shouldn't be like that. It is along way from launch though, and anything can change.

Actually, i'm not 40, i'm 24. And never in my life have I ever been over weight, i'm buying my own home. oh, and i have a wife and two daughters. So your assumption is wrong Fanboi. WoW is weak sauce just like WAR deal with it. and go on liveing in your kiddie game where everything is handed to you.

And Yes, It only takes about 1 1/2 week to 2 weeks to reach max level in that game. It's not hard. It is very simplistic. No real strategy. It's True I have done it. I just played While I was working. and I take phone calls all day that require me to have my hands on the 2nd keyboard away from the one that had wow on it. I mean seriously my 1yr could pwn you in the game. Just roll a retro pally and hit the I win button lol.

I dunno what all this "that and this game is like WOW" is for. Every MMO has some similarities to another and differences. In the end it is in the eye of the beholder, so to speak. ;)

I say wait and see when it is there. We know WAY to less to start any such speculations. I dont think any comparisions will be really revealing about any MMO.

Are we still going on about this WoW clone crap? I remember before Tabula Rasa came out, people were caling it a WoW clone, nothing about it except the auction house was like WoW. You guys speculate way too much but keep it up, negative hype might be good for Bioware since too much hype can kill a game when it goes live (look at AoC, PotBS & WAR).

And despite my dislike for the fantasy genre, I have to say WoW IS one of the only MMO games right now worth playing and it is still good, except I play City of Heroes/Villains.
