It sounded like he got a new monitor recently and that it's happened on both, so I don't think it's the cable or monitor if that's right.
yes i got a new Acer Monitor 23inch full 1080p widescreen this past friday from newegg. but yes it was happening on my previous monitor which was a 19inch gateway widescreen monitor as well. (this problem started to occur since this past December) the thing is like i have said in my startn posts is that i can be on my PC all day or what not going through sites no problems. it only happens when i play games on my PC, which these games im not even running on high settings at all. Left 4 Dead i have 3 other options to run on high settings but i dont max out everything....in World of Warcraft , a game with good graphics but doesnt require a high end card that cost $300 or more that are out there now. id assume i can run WoW on max settings with my 9600GT. but i had a question, if i decided to give ATI graphics cards a try with me having an nForce motherboard....will that cause me any probs if i hook up an ATI on here to try it out? because i still have my old PC which i bought an ATI Readeon X1600 Pro card i think it was.
maybe i should of just boughten a Dell XPS 630 PC since i was comparing and negotiating between that and this Gateway i bought instead >_> lol
or is it that the nvidia 9600gt 512mb cant handle any games at all on high settings? it can only handle games on medium to maybe only low settings? lol...im just throwing out guesses out now since i have tried everything to fix the problem, lol
You should be able to handle WoW on max settings no problem. You could use the Radeon to test out but it's not necessarily going to tell you much.
It's either your power supply, mobo or video card. I doubt you'd get 2 video cards in a row that had the same problem so I would think power supply most likely. The x1600 wouldn't stress the power supply as much so even if it worked fine you wouldn't know if it was the video card or the power supply that wasn't working though.
My next step would be to drive down to Best Buy and pick up a power supply, see if it works, if it does then return it and order one off Newegg for half the price, and if it doesn't then return it and figure out what to do next Or grab the power supply from your old PC with the ATI in it, it probably has the right connectors on it.

but if it is the power supply when the "no signal" thing happens....wouldn't my whole PC shutdown? my PC keeps running no probs...only monitor loses signal. and yea i higly doubt its the videocard since its a new one i got from PNY and my previous one PNY told me it passed all the tests it went through as well. my current power supply is 700watts...if i do need a new power supply are there any other specs i have to look for in getting in a power supply?
and to add on. in WoW instead of max settings i set it to "good" now and in left 4 dead i set it to the lowest possibly settings now to, lol.....still testing it out though.....like i said before it happens at random...sometimes within a few days, sometimes in a week....or sometimes it happens 3 times in one day. but i thank you again for trying to help me out

It could just be a problem with one of your +12V rails. I would try a new power supply. Even if it turns out to not be the power supply, you would still get a back-up (you should really always have a good back-up power supply). Just make sure you get one from a reputable manufacturer. With your system, you shouldn't really need anything greater than a 500W, as long as you get a quality power supply.
"Those who dislike things based only on the fact that they are popular are just as shallow and superficial as those who only like them for the same reason."
The root cause of this problem is because of over-voltage protection mechanism on this VGA card. Some 3D games will cause this “over-voltage” symptom while AP is running. Most of 8800GTS VGA cards do not have this protection mechanism, although the symptom will make the screen suddenly disappear won’t happen but there is still a chance that the GPU will be damaged by higher voltages
The only work around that seemed to "decrease the insidence" of the problem is using Gigabyte Gamer HUD to disable 2D/3D optimization and reverting the card to nVIDIA's default of 600-1500-900 mhz and 1.05 v prior to playing the games known to reveal the problem,

i have no idea how to do what you mentioned here. and if this is the cause of the problem why do they put these over-voltage protection mechanisms on cards? my previous system with an ATI x1600 prob card didn't give me this problem at all whatsoever. and heres the link to my power supply that came with my Gateway FX541S model i found online www.barebonekit.net/itemdesc.asp
to add on as well....when this does happen i look at my tower case since i have 1 side open...and i see everything is still running, fans, videocard fan as well etc...if it is the power supply wouldnt everything in tower shut off as well?
If it's the power supply, it's not that the power supply is shutting down but that the video card is crashing out because it's not getting what it wants from the power supply. Either it can't get enough power off that 12v rail because the PS capacitor aging, or maybe the PS is fluctuating too much - but any of that could just make the video card become unstable and give up without effecting the PS itself or anything else going on. The fan can still be spinning on the video card, just because it's become unstable and crashed doesn't mean it's not getting power - it just wasn't *good enough* for the video card to keep going as it was.
Also I googled a bit on what Nicrox was talking about and that may be the problem - try doing what he said, you might be able to do it in rivatuner or whatever, I'm pretty sure the Gigabyte tool was just mentioned because it was a Gigabyte card the poster had.

so weird though as i have a 700watt power supply which is more than enough watts for my 9600GT which only requires i believe it said 400watts on my card box. but i also read through a few sites to find out more info on this Gigabye HUD thing...possibly it is my fix? i guess i will have to try it but i have never really used any after market software thats out there to try and improve my PC performance...i don't want to mess anything up trying to use such programs
and it's been 2 days now that it hasn't done the "no signal" thing on me... like i said in my previous post...i have gone a week before it happened again.....but i basically only been playing WoW. i have lowered my graphical settings on the game 2 days ago as well....same thing with Left 4 Dead which i put setings to the lowest i was able to set it...although i havn't played it since i changed them. again i thank everyone for all your suggestions, i really appreciate it
DeadlySwordz, does this happen to 1 game or all the games? DId you set the resolution wrong in that particular game?
happens to most games i play. World of Warcraft, Left 4 Dead, Portal, Half Life 2. but im mainly playing the first two i mentioned. my resolution is set right...my 23inch monitor max resolution is 1920x1080...i have all these games set to that
Well the power supply has a chance at being defective just like any computer part - it SHOULD work, but you also shouldn't be losing signal - so obviously something isn't working right Also just cuz a power supply says it's x amount of watts doesn't guarantee anything about stability or quality. There's actually a somewhat decent list here that has some power supply rankings. As you can see, even power supplies from the same company vary widely on quality.
The more I read about that card the more it sounds like it may be the overvoltage protection or overcurrent protection like Nitrox was saying. But I still find it strange that both video cards would have the same problem unless they sent you back the same exact video card you sent in after they tested it.

nah PNY didn't send me the same card back. i remembered how my old card looked like and this is one is completely different plus it was nice and clean, lol. and the tech told me that on his system it said that they sent me a new one to... and to add on im sorta worried if download that Gaming Hud thing and try to fix this problem that i will mess up something. i mean some of you are saying its probably my power supply...so maybe i may try to get a new one...or i can do a full system restore to factory settings first with Gateway first? or since my PC is still under 1 yr manufactory warranty i can send it in to them as well for repairs?
if you're under warranty a tech call should be free maybe it's a known issue they can deal with. Or was the 9600 aftermarket? I guess it was since it's from PNY.
Usually to get through problems associated with a computer you look at if any of these are the problem.
User Error Driver Issues Malware Overheating Faulty Power Supplies(especially true with OEMs) Failed BIOS Flash Faulty Motherboard Faulty Hard Disk
I find that there is rarely ever a problem because of the GPU, CPU, or memory if it is properly installed.
so what i think im going to do first on tuesday or wednesday is do a full system restore to factory settings with gateway over the phone. they said they can walk me through it since its not a regular system restore to a few days ago that i can do by myself. the PNY tech told me on my previous 9600gt that it sounded like my card was overheating, so told me just to send my old one and and they'll send me a new one, which they did.....and for Noquarter yea this one is an aftermarket videocard i bought at Best Buy...my system came with a nvidia geforce 8600gt 512mb installed already from gateway.
if they full system restroe doesn't work then. i definately have to send it in to gateway to see if they can repair it. iv always had gateways since my first PC i ever had..this is the first one thats actually giving me problems...with that in mind maybe i should of just boughten the Dell XPS 630 i was comparing/nedotiating the Gateway with, lol. got the gateway because they gave me a little bit better of a good deal.
I don't think it's really Gateway's fault anyway, doesn't matter who makes the pc there's always somethin that can go wrong, when you buy a prebuilt computer you're buying their tech support. The components aren't made by them anyway.

my 1yr Gateway manufactory warranty expires this may. ........it's getting really aggrivating cause sometimes i don't even want to play a game on my PC because i know it's going to happen again. so i hope gateway can fix it... i will probably mention to them that i tried everything already, dusting whole PC out, the card individually, ram slots out as well, power supply itself to and the problem is still there....and i guess i can also tell them that i think its the power supply and maybe this one is defective or what not..and hopefully if it is the power supply they can give me a new or better one. also looked up some of those tier 1 power supplies posted in an earlier post...the first tier 1 one is like $300!! geez, lol
also ill probably mention as well that this has been happening since December. and that PNY has sent me a brand new 9600gt already. so it cant be the card nor it can't be my monitor since i bought a new acer 23inch widescreen and its happening on this, including my old 19inch widescreen one as well...so cant be the monitor
