worth giving this game a go?

been around playing various other mmos, and mostly they havent cut it in terms of ecconomy or combat. i played this game for a day or 2 at release and enjoyed the ship combat immensly, just wondering how population is like, since im after very active pvp, and how most aspects of the game are going at this point.

  • PvP zones vary from day to day; to get an idea of which server has the action at any given moment, take a look at ArmEagle's API-powered server list website here: http://potbs.armeagle.nl/

Of the five SOE servers, Antigua, Blackbeard and Roberts are the most active (in that order) though at the time of this posting Antigua is pretty quiet while Blackbeard is on fire and Roberts has quite a few out-of-the-way PvP zones up right now.

Several people from Blackbeard and a few from Antigua just transferred to Defiant (all Brits, if I'm not mistaken but I may well be...).  Whether that will help push Defiant's population into an upward trend, who can say.  If you want a server where you can level up and jump right into the action, though, the top three servers are where it's at... just be aware that Antigua no longer has any low-population XP bonuses as things have apparently evened out over there.

I played it for two months...gave up halfway through month 2.

Max everything is easy to get to (within a week) and pvp is completely optional.  Pvp being completely optional doesn't mean it's good though.  Most players grab the cheapest, fastest ship which is the Capriceaux MC.  If they can't beat someone, then they run away.  You find out that pvp is uneventful quickly when everyone uses the SAME ship.

Economy is drastically changed too.  Apparently, they wanted to help everyone get better ships to pvp so....they made resources and building way too easy to obtain therefore the market is flooded with items that are cheap.

The main reason, though, that I don't play anymore is instanced combat and instanced pvp.  With open world pvp, this game would rock.  I've played WoW PvP only servers and currently in  NavyField pvp only game.  PoTBS is the only pvp game where you're encouraged to run away and not fight to save your ship.

Definately worth a trial I'd say. I was playing it 2 months ago when my video card crapped out and have been out of the loop since, but when I get a new one, I'm thinking of subbing either this or EVE. The one drawback of PoTBS is that as nachofoot said, all the fighting is instanced.
