Is this game worth trying?

Just as the title says, I am looking to give EQ a try. I am wondering what server has the highest population, how is the community, what expansions are a must, and do I have to buy them all the expansions or is there a a one box setup with all the expansions Included?

If you havent played EQ1 back in the glory days, then I would say you will find the game quite tasteless (It was the bomb back in the day).  Whats the sudden interest of EQ lately anyway?  Highest population doesnt really matter, sometimes you will wish and pray that the server had less people because this isnt WoW you dont have many instances at all I mean they are there but NOTHING compared to other games.  Oh yea and some mobs take days.. literally DAYS to spawn.  I'd suggest picking a server that has the highest number of active raiding guilds.  It would increase your chances of meeting up with people that are willing to be your friend and help out from time to time.  When you buy the latest expansion you are getting all of the previous expansions by the way, this isnt 2001 anymore.  I have a feeling if this is your first time this late in the game then you will be just throwing SoE some free bucks.

Thank you for the advice my sudden interest in Eq is that I have been a Wow vet for 4 years and have tryed other new mmo's which have not held my interest. I have recently gone back to some old school games both Mmo's and First person Rpg's and I am having blast so far and there is nothing really new on the horizion just yet to really get me excited about the newer mmo's out. Eq was the top mmo back in the day so why not give it a shot even if it is for a few months I might get hooked find some people that i like grouping with and stick with the game or I might have the worst possible experince out there and quit I guess it all depends I guess.

It's too bad you all are just trying EQ now because your experience won't be anything like it was when it launched in 99 and servers were packed with people. I played it for almost 5 years, made some GREAT friends in the game and met several outside of the game at guild parties and such. In 25+ years of gaming all the way back to Atari 2600, EQ is still my most memorable experience.

Guessing the interest is coming from the lack of WoW raid content as well as the move Jeff Kaplan made, considering he used to play EQ. So its very funny seeing Tigole move on like that considering he stopped playing EQ and started working for Blizzard because of some of the holes in the original EQ, yet now WoW is much the same as EQ was, many holes... In raiding now mainly, pretty much zero new content for a whole xpack and w/e content they did come up with is used lazily twice (in two modes, 10man + 25man versions), and this is the same for future content too. I had a bad feeling when they announced the new raid-style, and looks like I was right, it was a way of telling players "fuck off, this is for dumbarse casuals now, because thats where the money is".

Casuals aren't the ones that are dumb, it's the so called "hardcore" lifeless pieces of dung that fit that discription.

EQ has sucked since after Velious, just don't bother giving SOE any money.

There is going to be a new server in 1-2 months (possibly progression), so that is a good time to play. Even if you start now and enjoy it, would be worthwhile to start again there. I went back a couple of times in various expansions starting from scratch and enjoyed myself immensely.

My fvorite era was kunark, didn't really like velious. I also really enjoyed PoP. Last time I played was around GoD, so quite a few expansions have been out since then, hehe. I'm tempted to try again once new server is out, although I will miss my fungus covered scale tunic for leveling, hehe.

Idk if I should try the new prog server or just play on a regular one. I don't really see the point if you're eventually going to play the game with the rest of the expansions anyway.

Well, for one thing, there will be more people to play with early on. Also, you get to experience the game through different stages, instead of jumping into a game with 15 expansions of content.

Pretty sure you'll just be soloing early on, on old server, but i've heard leveling now is insanely fast. Of course there is so much new info (to me), it is a bit to take in, hehe.

Either way, give it a shot. I have no idea how easy it is to get into a raiding guild or how immersive it will be to start.

Never said casuals were bad, I was a casual in Vanilla. But making the whole game for casuals... and making it so easy? Now that is another thing altogether. Vanilla made you feel little, there was so much to do, to explore. Even when you weren't a raider, and you had respect for raiders, for those who put more into the game then you did. Everything was random, none of this purely linear shit, if you went around a wrong corner you could actually discover something new rather then Blizzard forcing you back to certain areas at certain times (there are still quests I don't know about after playing the game for years).

Kaplan left for a reason, Blizzard KNOWS that its game has totally changed, Sunwell was the last gift to the hardcore. Instead of having a philosophy of "lets make lots of content, but leave much of it to those who put in the hard work" it's gone to, "lets make limited amount of content and make it so easy that everyone gets a chance at ALL the content". Was it Blizzard's fault? Yes and no, on one side they could have stuck to their game, on the other side if they did they could be losing a lot of money... But it was World of Warcraft that made World of Warcraft popular in the first place, Wii didn't make WoW big, so why are they following new design philosophy when WoW became big for a reason? Maybe changing the game design WILL bite them in the butt, it is already starting, only time will tell whether this change in direction will make them more numbers or make them lose them.
