Or they want to advertise the game because thats what gets new people in. If you don't advertise a game then most people forget it exists and never come back to it or even try it. EVE Online and WoW have proven how much advertising benefits an mmorpg.
If you are referring to the fact that the ad is on sites dedicated to WoW (Wowwiki, Wowhead) I thought I would point out that it is probably not up to the individual site what ad they are putting up, so much as where the parent company is getting the money from. It is the same reason you might see a WoW ad on a WAR wiki site. So it is not so much them being desperate (ie, putting ads on sites devoted to other games) as them paying companies to put up their ad on the sites they run...Wowhead is run by Zam, and Wowwiki comes under Wikia.

majority of ads on wikia and wikipedia come from googleads. The Company has no real say in what ads come up for each sight. Google uses thier search engine to determine the best results and then puts in an ad that might interest the viewer. Since WoW and WAR are both MMORPGs it only makes sense. It's like when I go to the grocery store and after I check out, buying diapers, I'll get coupons for huggies or some other brand, the company that makes huggies pays an ad agency to do this for them. If you buy anything like baby wipes, strollers, anything baby related, the computer that prints out the coupons picks it up, and says print out this coupon they might like it. Same thing happens with googleads.

I don't see anything wrong with a AD.
Imo WAR is a pretty good game for the pvp crowd why not try to reach out to them.
Not everyone lurks a site like mmorpg.com for mmo info.

Thanks for clearing that up a bit more!
