So, Starting Out...

Well, as much as I replaced Funcom with Failcom back in May '08, it seems like they've improved alot and many people are giving it positive feedback. So, what the hell, I got a Buddy Key. I'll write my impression/review once my 7 (10, $2.99 for download gives you 3 free days) are up, but I'm a bit lost.

Okay. So first off, which class is best for PvE, mainly grinding mobs? Now I understand combat isn't like your typical MMO - even so, I seem to die when two or three mobs gank me, which, unfortunately, is quite often. I can one or two shot some shit with my Tempest but his heals are pathetic (a trend I hope does not continue in the higher levels...) I have a Conqueror at level 10 now.

Second, what's up with your shields? Apparently you have to press Ctrl + 1, 2, or 3 (default) to assign different levels of shielding to different areas (left, front, right, respectively). Unfortunately, in combat, this system seems pretty clunky - especially when mobs are swinging once or even twice every second. For PvE (since I can't seem to get into any PvP on a PvE server, Crom), is it just best to leave shields alone and have 1 left, 1 front, and 1 right? I can deal damage well enough because I ignore my target's shields, but one very annoying thing is when you try to start a combo, but your target immediately assigns all his shields to the next attack in the sequence. Negates almost all damage. Even on my Guardian, when I tried to use Active Blocking, I still took damage. Does it actually block incoming attacks or does it just reduce the damage?

Third, are fatalities random? They seem to be on my Tempest but on my Conq. I'm not quite sure if I have any control over it or not...some special combination of attacks plus combos.../shrug?

Fourth, (only a half serious question), why do the run animations suck (not the sprinting one, that's okay) when all the other ones are smooth? And holding a two handed weapon like a sword, trying to keep it pointing straight up when I run...looks like I'm an old grandma trying to shuffle to the nearest Bingo game.

Any answers would be appreciated, thanks.

Everyone would say Tempest of Set. They have the best AoE grinding capability, and heals do get better at later levels.

Forget about setting up shields, and active blocking takes to much stamina to be useful

    Fatalities are random

Because you are wearing a lot of armour which would be hard to run in.

Tempest, does get better, it is just they are a bit squishy with the cloth armor but the DPS can make up for it. Example I can take on several NPC guys the same level with the spells I put up. Sometimes I think I am a tank lol, I think the Tempest has better self heals than a PoM where as PoM's are more buff types for group play more so.

Reduces damage, the defence is active defending, at best unless you are mightily skillfull I reserve the ability to change it up unless I PvP then I know which class + which leads their combos start with in better preperation to reduce damage. Against general mobs best to leave the default on 1 bar across the board. Keep an eye on targets shield and adjust or set up combos accordingly. Like if your combo has a left starter and you NPC mob is having 3 shields on the left you wont do as much dmg. Give them a whack on the right a few times and the AI will balance it up leaving you an opening. So it reduces damage. Also remember drains stamina too! Important for your Conq!
Third, are fatalities random? They seem to be on my Tempest but on my Conq. I'm not quite sure if I have any control over it or not...some special combination of attacks plus combos.../shrug?
If you can finish an NPC (like kill him) during the final parts of a combo you generally have a better chance for a fatality, same with spells if you cast a good one and it kills them with that hit you have better chance. Also gear factors in a better percentage to pull them off with having stats for this + gems too.

The best bingo call is Get up and Run number 31!!

Alexander the Conq Advocate may come post some feedback for them if we are lucky :)

  • 1.  Probably some class like a necro, ToS, or something.  All of the priest classes are crappy pre-level 20 because they do significantly less healing relatively until the new ranks you get 20+

    2.  One on each side is good for PvE.  In PvP, though, it's very effective to set your shields to certain sides expecting your opponents high damage combos to land there.

Usually mobs don't switch which sides their shields are on suddenly without you beating on that one side first.  They might change directions fast but that's probably them just turning around to face you.

    3.  Fatalities require that you kill your enemy with a combo.  What else effects the chances of it happening, I'm not sure, but there are weapons and gear with +% fatality chance on them that seem to make a difference.

    Oh hooray, consistant answers!

Thanks guys, I will level Seleucid (ToS) now.

One other thing, after saving the stupid jungle bitch like 8 times now (since I made alot of alts), do you get to skip Tortage once you finish it with one character, or was that just wishful thinking? I seem to remember alot of people suggesting it last year.

    wishful thinking

It is preferable not to travel with a dead man.

Seems you have settled with your ToS but if you want to know any additonal information on the Conqueror class or melee combat in general feel free to send me a private message and I'll do my best to clarify whatever is needed.

and unfortunetly no, you can not skip tortage regardless how many characters you level up.

If you are looking for a really good solo/grinding class you may also want to checkout Necros which solo very efficiently.
