Sandbox with extreme difficulty?
Like the title says.
I want the game to not rely solely on how long one plays the game, but the skill of the player. I do understand that mmorpgs are time investments, so I'm willing to give my time for one. My current experience is: 2 months of WoW, 2 months of WAR, 1 month of FFXI (contemplating going back to this), and 2 years in runescape. I'm still subbed to Final Fantasy XI, and I think I might stay, but I'm not so sure. Fighting for a group doesn't exactly sound appealing to me, but I might jump into it.
What I'm really looking for is something PVP eccentric, with a deep crafting system that actually has a purpose other than making money, an open world with no instances (not a fan of instanced gameplay), heavy death penalty, no levels (I can deal with having levels, but really prefer skill points), solid PVE that relates to PVP, mature community, and a solid playerbase (healthy population). City building would be a plus.
A side note: I'm not a fan of sci-fi; I would much prefer this game to be fantasy based, if at all possible. Also, is Darkfall really worth investing in? I'm seeing mixed reviews out there, and have followed the game for about 6-8 months, so I know what AV was like. I just want a true word as to whether this game would be the one. I want to actually grow with a community instead of "invade" the community, if you know what I mean.

Too bad you said no to sci-fi as you pretty much described EVE Online to the letter.
Try Afterwolds its in alpha but taking players
You might want to look at Wurm Online...The graphics are sub-par but it is very gritty and sandbox--y
I've had a change of heart, and decided to go with EVE. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
