Apparently there are tons of you guys looking for a new game. I was one of you until the 20th of this month.
It's a fantasy game, beautiful graphics, awesome storyline and world. Combat is interesting because its non auto locked, or auto targeted. The questlines are really interesting, and it's almost brand new. It just went to open beta, so there's no uber people yet. There is PVP and PVE content, and there are soloable and group instances.
It's free to play up to level 7.99, then there is a subscription. If you sub, you won't lose your char when the game officially releases.
In my opinion, the tutorial area and the first zone in the game are underwhelming when compared to the second zone you come to, that is when the game really kicks on. But, they were only underwhelming after I got to the second area. While I was in the first area, I was amazed. Then I got to the second area, and wished it was the first area, because it gave an even better impression of the game.
It is truly a beautiful looking game, but it's very very young. Check out some videos if nothin' else.

I agree wit Severine. I too was looking for something different and decided to give Spellborn a try. I went in with no expectations at all, matter of fact I fully expected to be uninstalling the game after a brief uinspiring trial. But I've been really surprised by the game.....and it does get better as you progress, particularly after lvl 10.
I've tried/played most of the MMOs out there to date (only sticking with EQ, AC and WOW for any length of time) and this is really much better than I expected. Now, it won't be for everyone but it's at least worth a try....it is free for first 7 lvls. The biggest gameplay gripe I've seen from most players is lack of a quest tracker (ie easy mode) but that doesn't bother me at all.
It's still a new game and needs some tweaks/adds (don't they all at this stage?) but I would take a look if you're really searching for something new.
I may have to try the game. I like games without quest tracking system.
It does make it easy and boring just "going from point A to point B killing X mobs or getting Y amount of Z to drop".
I tried the beta way back when and was extremely dissapointed... i guess i'll download it and see if it's any better.
I am 2 days into the trial and I like what I see so far.
This is a good game for the strategists who likes the planning part of gear, skills, spells and attacks.
Not a huge fan of the targeting combat but I am getting better as I play.
The feel of the world is quite good. Not cartoonish or too familar.
I played ROM till level 20 and thought it was ok, but not too much different than WOW. This seems different and I am actually reading the text from the NPC's which I have only ever done in LOTRO.
Definitely worth a try and it just might stick.
Okay after reading this... I went and downloaded and have been playing it today. I really like it actually! Now I played beta.. but only for like an hour because I thought it blew. If you have played beta I can tell you it has gotten a lot better imo.
I've gotten kinda bored with other MMOs I've played or tried out ... CoH, GW, WoW, Vanguard, WAR, EQ2... this feels different.
Seriously people, if you are struggling to find a new MMO.. please try this one. It's FREE to download and try till level 7. As the poster above said it just feels different while you play, and not in a bad way. Also I too find myself actually reading the text from NPC. It's not bogged down by nonsense.
I think I will play till I get to lvl 7 and then subscribe! It's certainly not for everyone... but if you have been floating around trying to find an MMO please dont' count this one out! It can't hurt to give it a try.
My impressions on the trial:
I've played the free trial up to level 7. It's acceptable for a F2P game, but certainly not P2P.
The quests were annoying, I mean how many boars and bears I had to kill, damn.
As for the environment, it looked good, but the character models were simply bad in my opinion.
The combat system is not that innovative imo.
I've also enjoyed the first person view, that was really a nice addition, but I didn't like the controls for it and you don't see yourself
attacking or casting magic in that view, too bad.
6/10, it's alright, nothing too amazing.
I am currently DLing the client, If its FPS view only I might as well cancel the DL now.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
About the character models, pick up or google a few french or dutch comic books. That's where the style comes from.
(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
It's not all FPS, just like other MMO's, if you zoom in far enough it goes FPS.
I'm really enjoying it, the whole look and feel is a nice change, I got some Acclaim coins through one of their deals and got 90 days of time...
Yeah I'm still enjoying it a few days later. Feels very refreshing compared to everything else out there. And I never get tired of looking at it or just exploring.
I gotta chime in here. I'm a harsh critic of MMOs...especially the newer generation of wow clones and theme-park trash.
Spellborn ROCKS.
I havn't been playing all that long, but I highly recommend the game.
The art style is a twisted dark fantasy Tim Burton style that just amuses me to look at. It's refreshing and has a "whoah!!" factor that I really enjoy.
Plus the game runs like silk, and looks awesome with AA turned on.
The game is a mix of FPS movement / aiming, with optional third person perspective and MMO progression. It is a combination of being level based, and being skill based.
But the best way to find out if you'll enjoy it as much as I do is to download the client and play for a while. It's free up to level 7, and you can roll a few alts (there is a PVP server as well), and see what you think.
I didnt really like it that much the first time I played it, but once i got the hang of the controls and combat I found it to be very... refreshing. I know a lot of people use that word, but even though youre doing the same quests youve done in 500 other MMOs, the combat and skills (as well as lore) make it much more bearable.
+ points: Combat system thats not about spamming the same few skills over and over and requires pre planning through skill combinations and sigils
+some great quests and enemies
+very unusual classes..no tank and spank type of play, no traditional healers-a good healer is the bloodwarrior who requires having bloodlinks with friends or foes. Through these he can tak e a portion of other peoples damage like a sponge, reflect damage back at his enemies and use useful buffs and heals. the buffs and heals also effect your enemies, so it brings a whole new level of tactical play to basic encounters.
+No CC like stuns,fear
+decent death penalty that makes dying painful.
+no quest helpers if you like that kind of thing
+great mob AI
+non gear centric, player skill based
+crafting and gathering can be done by all. gathering like mining is an automatic skill, and there are no tiers of crafting. a level 3 could craft a recipe found in a level 50 area.No craft grind whatsoever. Resources can be difficult to find and require specific mob types. Resources can be fought over in pvp in mines.
+exploration game. Though the world is comparitively tiny compared to a lot of MMOs, the world is full of unusual places to discover, underground caverns and beautiful scenery to find.
+pvp servers not only have open pvp, but also giant underground mines to fight in
-a lot of generic filler quests
-combat isnt for everyones taste
-can be very confusing for a new player
-ftp area is like barrens chat
-acclaims player base of ftp 2moons types are the ones being advertised to.
-missing some basic features.
-its not a traditional MMO,which may not be to everyones taste.
Yeah its pretty good. But still won't beat Runes of Magic
I've been playing off and on for last few days. It's okay. I like the world setting and the combat is fun. The jury's still not out for me though.
How long does the trial last? 14 days or so?
Forever.
You get the client (box) for free and then you get to play as much as you want, on how many toons you want, up to L7.9
To get to L8 and above you need to sub.
Thats it
its lvl based, not time based. An experienced player can get to the lvl cap in an hour. but it may take a new player a couple of days. U r free to make as many characters as u like, try out all the classes, so theoreticly f2p can last indefinetely, u just wont get very far...
but yeah, his is the bast mmo i played in a while (lvl 19 now and rising ^_^ )
Gawd I hope not! I mean, I love RoM for what it is, but the two communities are like oil and water. They won't mix.
Forever.

and actually, if you mess around with Acclaim's coin system a little, you can get a month or more for free.
I'm pretty damn stoked, 'cause I've been bored off my ass waiting for an MMO to play, and now I have the next 3 months of TCOS for free...can't beat it.
Maybe I'll get bored of the game by then, but I really hope not....it's such a breath of fresh air, and has a lot of things I love in an MMO.
I've read a tons of french/belgian comics since I was young. I enjoy the style, not just the models.
Yeah, I'm enjoying the game as well. When I first read about it I was excited about the art style, and the combat system. Now, what I'm actually blown away by is the size of the maps...even the two trial maps, theres lots too see off the beaten path. I enjoy that. I'm also surprised at the community. Even in the trial areas, the community is mature and fun. And so far, I'm having an absolute blast with the game.
Hawk's Landing and Aldenvault are huge yes, but by subbing you can go visit Quarterstone which is by far THE biggest place I've ever been, the whole shard is one giant city.
Level 18 and I have no intention of stopping. With today's patch in the works, it will only get better.
Started the beta last night and so far so good. I had to change a config file to my resolution but the art style is pretty good. I picked up a few quest and killed a couple of bears. Community in game seemed really nice also. I will play more when I get home from work but so far so good. Oh, I almost forgot. I am a Spellcaster and just wanted to know if anybody could tell me a little about the 3 mage classes so I can know which one is better for me. thx in advance
