Curious, I was under the impression that it was precisely the school kids you enjoyed the "fast action paced, kill, kill, kill, fps" themepark (aka - go here, then there and finally come back here) type games rather than those with in depth customisation, community features and sandbox in nature.
This isnt the PRECioUs part 2. Uncle Owen, and his crafting based economy have no bearing here.
Too complex it resembles a job to you yes?
In other words you Simmers are hosed.
I wouldn't quite declare victory until we find out what the end game content in this game will be. i wouldn't want to find you some time down the road whining on the forums for more dungeons because you are sick of visiting the same old ones time and again, and finding yourself with nothing to do but trying to organise some meaningless pvp.
It is a shame you dont support titles intended for you, and leave the PvE loot/adventure oriented games alone. I will guarantee ya...the majority of folks would prefer the games we play dont include people like you, and you fellow simmers.
You know why that is? Cause you arent content to accept what is given to ya. Nope. Instead you kick your feet on the boards, and you dont shut up. It isnt just the Devs that dont like to deal with you guys...it is your fellow gamers as well.
well this made me laugh, since ill remind you that it was precisely the themepark, easy-mode, fps crowd like yourself who brought SWG down; whining on the forums at how hard jedi was to unlock, how inbalanced professions were and the queues you needed to make to take a shuttle, amongst others.
Calling folks names cause they dont agree with ya. I enjoyed the constant attempts at gettng folks banned Hubert. Impressive kid.
This game is intended as an adventure, and as such wont revolve around Uncle Owen. I understand that saddens folks like you, and it couldnt make me happier. They wasted the SW IP on you simmers the first time around, it is about time they got the target audience right.
hahaha as an adventure? you mean to say story-telling is more adventurous than landing on a space sport in an unkown planet with nothing but your name and 250 skills to spread around 32 professions and no story to tell you what to do or where to go? uncle owen wasnt an adventurer either; but people like nick rostu were. do you know who he is? of course you don't, because he wasnt heroic enough for you.
So find somewhere else to do the social misfit Trekkie thing....this game isnt having it. After EA's bomb with Sims online, you can bet this isnt going to be a rehash.
I guess that leaves you traders/sandboxers with Darkfall....as I believe you guys on the vet forum were talking about this game for a while. Good Luck with it. I hear it will have you playing all types of roles.
eh, sandbox might very well be on the rise again my friend, along with the RPG aspect of the MMO. after WoW many tried to emulate it and create huge counter strike MMOs, but the tides might just be turning again...

This is one of the reasons the current MMO market is failing, WoW aside.

Kids, parents, even older gamers set unrealistic expectations about what qualifies as a sucessful mmo playerbase. WoW has set a new curve...what, 10 million *world wide* and rising. Many gamers now were either too young or probably too uninterested in MMO subscription numbers before WoW started quoting millions.

    http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart1.html

For example, just assuming the above chart is reasonably accurate, it shows the only MMO's to ever break the 1 million mark have been lineage and WoW...so saying alarms are going off at 300k subscriptions is just being ignorant of the facts. 300k subscriptions at its 12.95 a month cost(i think thats what it was at the time?) is 3.8 million a month...that hardly seems like a failure....no matter how much bandwith, servers and ongoing development costs.

*And since i know if its not written out here somone will make the comparison. WoW makes blizzard something in the area of 150million $ every month. Should really make the WoW players ask where all the money is going after providing stable servers and a patch months or so apart(some larger then others).

Nope...I am an Eqer since 01.

We knew better than to play that POS SWG game. You are probably one of those that thought Pre-CU was it being as it was your first MMO. That is why you dont know better. But thanks for trying.

Dream about your sandboxes K...PvE ruled with EQ, and downright blasted the MMO ranks when WoW introduced it to the mainstream.

ANd you are flippen nutz if you think SWG had anything on EQ in difficulty...I have sat a camp for over 20 hrs straight(about 25 actually)...have you? Unless you have done the same in SW I think you need to STFU about difficulty and time consuming.

So keep dreaming of the PRECioUs part 2 K.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

Psssst.. PRE - CU is DEAD DEAD DEAD and for good reason... Help us all if TOR turns into a failed remake of SWG..

If it fails it will be because players like yourself were too timid or too sycophantic to tell Bioware what we, the customers, need and want from a game.

I don't think you're going to to get the big, swinging shooter game that you want because the simple, button-mashing demographic is already sewn up by the 'Hello Kitty: Island Adventure' market where I'm sure you will be happiest.

Dont look to insult me kid.

I am not the 29 yr old unemployed college kid(still) that cant afford to play Darkfall(exactly what you relayed to us the other day...or did ya forget)

Not only am I older, but I made my career during my working days. Something you have yet to do. Perhaps you should get a job eh?

So you can take that Nancy attitude and *I will be nice and not say it heh*

Seriously Hubert...where do you get off? You used to act like you were in your 40s or 50s, try to play yourself off as something you arent. I can see why now. The multiple MMORPG accounts you run are just the icing on the cake.

The reason you know no better about MMO gaming is cause you were a noob in SWG.

Nobody liked it for a reason...pity those of ya that come in with that game, and continue to think it was the cats meow. It wasnt.

When SWG got below 300k accounts, which meant a heck of a lot less folks playing than that, is probably when alarms started going off in Smeds office. If you think about it, that really is an awfull slim amount of SW fans playing considering EQ at all times stayed ahead of it. Probably when talks of a revamp began...if not sooner after watching Beta see Ralph not being able to implement the classes...let alone put content into the game.
Koster should be beotch smacked for attempting to launch a RL sim on SOE/LA's money. I see he isnt doing it with his new project, which his company is backing AFAIK. I bet even Ralph would mentally say "Only an idiot would make another SWG" if someone were to ask him why his latest projest wasnt SWG2. He wouldnt say it...but damn it all just the same...that fracker would be thinking it.
Shame he didnt think it when SWG was in development, and long before he began spinning his wheels in beta.   I havent heard yet....is Ralph gonna make his own customers stand in doc lines for content this time as well? I bet the answer is "Hell No!".
Ah well...we may not be able to ninja kick Ralph for the BS game he unleashed upon the masses, but we can hopefully finally have a game without his idiotic influence in place.

Heh that is just what you were going on about, in the other thread, on your other account of Tron there college boy.

You really shouldnt use your alt account on same thread there Skippy...it makes those of us that dont use multiple accounts able to spot ya out easier.

Someday, someone, be it Bioware, or some other company who thinks outside the box is going to realize that players want more freedom in games. They want to do things they have never been able to do in other games, because if you're a gamer, chances are you've played every type of game there is to play by now. A simple example comparing SWG to WoW, read these statements, and if anyone can give me a reasonable, logical answer as to why they would choose WoW over SWG BASED ON THESE STATEMENTS alone, then you just don't know good games.

WoW: The best flying mount in the game (only obtainable by pure chance, luck of the roll which could takes months, upon months to get, possibly longer) its fast, and looks cool, it gets you everywhere you need to go. It will always be the same, a simple tool to get you from point A to point B. You can't attack while mounted, but others can attack you. If you get attacked by chance, then there is a possibly of instant death from a five hundred foot free fall to the dirt.

SWG: The best spaceship in the game (you bought it when you had some extra creds), it's fast (customizable), looks how I want it to look (customizable), and not only gets you everyplace you need to go, but you can gain experience and loot doing space combat. Should I get sick of grinding levels, I can always go do space combat for a bit of gameplay change. Oh yeah, and each part is customizable down to dotting the "i'"s and crossing the "t"s, and you can name the ship as well.

People want more choices, plain and simple. If you don't give it to them straight out of the gate, then you will eventually end up giving it to them months or years down the road, and by that time your game will be history.

Raph is still a genius, and I'll tell you why. When you launch an MMORPG, the devs spend the next few years implementing new content. When SWG was released it had tons of player content, things for them to do and paths for them to choose. That was never changed. They worked on other areas because players had 32 professions to choose from and enjoy, and mix and match how they saw fit. Raph's vision of SWG wasn't just a casual RPG game, it was the ultimate RPG game. Do anything you want, he looks at games 20 years into the future, which is how all devs should if they want to make great games. Raph's creativity fueled SWG, and he is still putting that to use, that's why he's still genius. Every other game company just wants to copycat everything they see, they've lost creativity, which is ideally what invented the video game to begin with!

Then shouldnt you be in line to play Ralphs new game, rather than in line for what you dont seem to like in the first place?

Ralph made a RL sim out of SWG and it bombed hard. There is nothing else to say about it. Only those with blinders on would say otherwise.

Some SW fans played his game...the rest of gaming world said no back then...long before the kids who like very directed content came to MMOs no less.

1.)Then shouldnt you be in line to play Ralphs new game, rather than in line for what you dont seem to like in the first place?

2.)Ralph made a RL sim out of SWG and it bombed hard. There is nothing else to say about it. Only those with blinders on would say otherwise.

3.)Some SW fans played his game...the rest of gaming world said no back then...long before the kids who like very directed content came to MMOs no less.

1.) I ask myself that very same question every time these Koster fanboys litter the forums of every game in development. Go spend time on the forums of Koster's new game if he was such a great genuis. Bioware made their intentions on this game crystal clear from day one so nobody should be suprised that this isn't going to be another SWG.

2.) Very true. An MMORPG based off of a popular franchise that has already made billions should be an easy winner. I believe even Lucas looked at that game and said "THis isn't Star Wars."  That is why launch was a disaster and why they felt to need to wipe the slate clean and start over. By that point however it didn't matter.

3.) The only reason I stuck with it was because of my guild. There wasn't shit to do in game once you had your skill points tapped out unless grinding was your fancy. Hence why they bleeded subs to the point that it is now sitting around 10k and on life support until this game comes out. I highly doubt anyone will want to sit around a dead game when a company is offering a much better version of that IP on another game.

I wouldnt play any game under swg tag ever again. Im a veteran player of games, started out with UO in 1998, went on to swg, then the cu came, i abandoned 3 accts, and will never play another game  with anything to do with SWG, even if it's supposed to be new game, new name, they screwd us vets over, i currently play wow and hate it, gave up uo about 3 months ago, dispite all uos catering to noobs with fairy tale lands the crafting was alot better then dumb wow crafting and in swg it was a true skill,  harvesting the right steel for scopes, the right  copper with stats in like shock to make swords, the harvesting , the housing, the professions ,it all was good, i woulda stayed with swg forever , but soe had to ruin it with the cu .now im looking for a new game cuz wow is boring maybe if darkfall ever releases it will maybe fill the bill, kinda sounds like how uo was in the beginning  fully pvp no fairy tale land to run too

Just because you played it, doesn't mean you loved it, and if you didn't love it, you will never understand.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

I dont think you will ever see another game withthe depth of tradeskills as in SWG.

Traders are too small of the percentage of players to be devoting so much a portion of the development money on their cause. To do so takes away from the other aspects of the game that sell to the rest of the gamers.

Which only makes sense...you dont spend your money to attract the smallest crowd in these games. For what you are looking for, I am afraid you are going to have to look for veru limited niche titles.

It may change someday...but I doubt inthe next 5 to 10 yrs. It just doesnt pay the bills.

I have heard talk of folks carrying 4 to 7 accounts as nothing special. The ones running 10 or more were the big dogs. I wonder if Sam da Man had a few of those accounts :P

'Raph'. His name is 'Raph'. Not 'Ralph'. It's short for 'Rafaele'.

I'm not in line for any game, I never said I was. SWG may have "bombed" at launch, but it grew very popular, and at one point it was the biggest MMORPG on the market. That doesn't matter either way, you're missing the point, everyone always misses the point.

When you launch a MMORPG, unless it bombs HARDCORE, it will eventually turn into a sandbox game due to content being added on and stacked over and over and over; because players get tired of doing the same thing day in and day out. <--- THIS IS THE POINT BY THE WAY Even a game like World of Warcraft will eventually go the sandbox route because there just isn't any other way to go. You have to keep the player interested, and giving them things to do is the ONLY answer. All I'm saying, is to build a sandbox world to begin with, but don't make it unfamiliar to the player, THEN build onto that. It's inevitable man, all games eventually turn into sandbox games to keep the player interested. That is of course if the game is interesting enough for the player to last that long. Raph knows this, so do a lot of veteran pioneers of the MMORPG genre. The problem right now is no one gives a rat's ass, they want to cash in right now while the trend is still hot. Only 2/3 of the world has common sense, and every game developer seems to have joined the fraction.

Because games in this genre continue to get larger, I think a lot of development companies are going to find out that in order to make a successful MMORPG, it takes more time and more money than most of them can even realize. Bioware has said that SWTOR already has more content than ALL of their games combined. Take a look at all the games they've made here. And that's how these games need to be made in order to even have a chance to be successful right now.

These next couple years will be interesting for MMORPG's, for no other reason than the sci-fi setting taking the reigns. Hopefully, Star Trek, Stargate, and the new Star Wars will redefine the genre and tell developers that yes, you have to take more time to make a better game because players are sick of questing, they're sick of leveling, and they just want something new.

There is something wrong with you if you don't show any passion for a personal hobby. Go tell car guys to "get a life" for loving cars. Go tell gardeners to "get a life" for loving to be in the garden. Or maybe you should open your mind a little and stop being so damn ignorant. I'm a programmer. I love computers, I love software, and I love games. I pity you for having such an empty life that you can't love anything.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

LOL  what in the world are you even talking about? By the way, spouting "you failed" in your posts really bolsters your intelligence.

ROFL. That's an understatement. It's a rage that has lasted 3 1/2 years with no sign of getting cured. It goes from forum to forum like a virus trying to attach itself to the latest game in the mere desperate hopes that it can assimilate it and turn it into SWG 2003.

By the way, I'm borrowing that line for my sig.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

i might suggest bolstering your own intelligence before you insult others. when all else fails it seems people resort to that when they cant think of anything else to say. insult ones intelligence, the last resort. bravo.

Why wouldn't Starwars MMO fans from the last game be interested in the new StarWars MMO?  Why wouldn't they make suggestions for the new game based on what they liked in the old one?  You know that fans were asked to share their ideas don't you?

It seems to me that you're trying to pathologize a very straightforward process of sharing suggestions based on a positive past experience.

I'd love to see the kind of character diversity we used to have in the old game for example.  At the same time, I'm very excited about Bioware's emphasis on stories and how decisions will affect the story development for each character--like they did in KOTOR.

Good aspects of the old game were good, so what?  New aspects of the new game also seem very interesting.

Btw, Pre-cu is dead because it was released in a badly broken and incomplete state, and then revamped repeatedly, making it worse each time imo.  Hopefully a ton of lessons have been learned from this disaster by LEC especially.  If they don't recognize why pre-cu failed, and why people loved certain aspects of it by now; then yes, help us all, because they're involved in this new project too.

If they screw this one up, I doubt they'll ever get another chance at an MMO.

So he loved a software program, big deal. Having a passion for something, anything, gives you inspiration in life. You don't have passions, loves, you fall into the category of every single drone in the world that works a job they hate and accepts it.

Veterans of SWG are still pissed, yeah. Why? Because SOE pushed them back to the stone age. SWG was probably the closest game anyone has ever played that tapped the surface of an alternate reality. You had one character, one life to live, the player's ultimate alter-ego was created here, and in no other game since. A lot of things I talk about and reference, people have no idea about, and I don't expect you to understand either. What I expect from you is to have a constructive debate instead of spouting off derogatories like you're in elementary school. Intelligent conversations make people smarter, it's a proven fact. I get it okay, you're a gamer who likes to use internet lingo, whatever man. Ask yourself who needs to get a life when you're adding absolutely nothing even remotely intelligent to a general forum topic.

I don't think it will turn into a re-make of the original Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided. I think Bioware will look at things fans enjoyed in the pre-CU days, and then invent new things to take their place; or even improve on old game systems.

He is trolling? You are defending someone whos panties got ruffled, thus turned to calling people names.

Mr Lincoln insults everyone around who doesnt agree with him. It isnt like this is the first post he has done it in.

SWG was a game for some disturbed individuals to role-play their lives in SW. It was nothing about a game....just some sick fantasy world that got shattered.

Who needs to get a life? The malcontents who cant get over it, and anyone else that condones their behavior.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

    One can hope...

I'm interested to see how the game does... I do hope it does well even if *I* don't like it.

On the other hand after EA paid 860 Million and change for BioWare.. I'm wondering what the reaction wouuld be if it "only" had 300,000 subs.... Will it be considered a failure... or will it be a success because it says BioWare on the box.

I certainly hope the game does well enough that EA thinks its a success and lets BioWare do its thing... just call it morbid curiousity.
