SWG I still miss you!

Started the game on Tatooine with no clue about nothing. But wow that atmosphere just sucked me into the game.

Stopped playing the day after NGE. At that point I  had 4 accounts. One being Imagedesigner / tailor, Another one TK /  Doctor, One Mayor, One BE /  MD. Was a guild leader and we had a huge player city.

A friend list full of glowing names.

One day fun crafting things with a cracter that the next moment went dancing or traveled to an outpost to dance buff other players.

Still remember the last day and the creature handlers with their pet standing in Theed. Sad.. sad.

What a game...

Yesterday I  looked at screenshots. Our guild hall. Our museum, theatre, the queue in front of my doctor waiting for buffs, the crowded cantinas...

Loved it. Miss it. *raises fist in anger at SOE*& will never forgive them.

    I agree 100%.

No game has really captivated me the way SWG did, preCU/preNGE.

The game wasn't perfect, true enough.  SWG was, however, community minded.   Aside from the name 'Star Wars', the community and friendships created there are the only reasons that game is still alive.

I have a large collection of screenshots myself.  I'm glad I still have them around to remind me of the fun times I had in SWG.  It's honestly too bad that SOE had to go and turn the game into some 'kid-friendly', broken game.

I've re-up'd my sub's to SWG a few times.  After I walked around my houses and checked things out a few times, checked my friends list to see who was on/left, checked the vacant vendors, and then took a few more screenshots.... I'd log.  I figured I can get just as much joy out of going over my old screenshots as I can be paying SOE $15/mo just to view my old stuff.

I would have to say pre CUNGE was the best.

    Agreed.

Soon as NGE hit, i make a new character just for the fun of it and 3 minutes after arriving in tatooine, a vet convos me and tells me hes quitting and handing me all of his stuff.

Needless to say, those 10mil credits came in handy and i decided to try and go crafter with that character. Eventually i just quit. I resub every 3 months to add money to my guild hall turned house, and thats pretty much it.

    (Excuse the language)

NGE = Cluster-fuck. (The area denial weaponry of fuckups. One patch, massive casualty.)

SWG encouraged us, and gave us the tools, to build community, and that's exactly what we did.  We made friends, we built homes, we built cities and mastered professions.  We built up businesses and clientele.  We formed bands, and we explored worlds.  For some of us it was a chance to virtually live out a childhood dream.

Sure the homes, professions, cities etc., were all virtual; but the friendships, the feelings and the community were not.  When the tools that allowed us to build and maintain this community were stripped away, we didn't merely grieve lost pixels.  We grieved community.  Those shining names on our friend lists winked out, and everything we had built together was left feeling hollow and empty.  This is the loss many of us felt.  People who talk about whining over deleted pixels are utterly clueless, and in their ignorance they can be insensitive--at best.

Having said that, I know that many former SWG players have made a lot of progress with their grief.  We've forgiven where necessary, we've accepted what was and is no more, we celebrate good memories, and we've moved on to other activities that give us joy, and possibly a similar sense of community--online or elsewhere.  That doesn't mean we don't miss something that was very meaningful to us, and sometimes the grief comes to the surface once again.

Another part of this grief process for me has been about learning.  I've learned a lot about myself, about people, about community, and about MMOs.  I've learned that some people understand the powerful dynamics involved in populating a virtual world, and some don't.  Some use their understanding, it seems, as opportunities to manipulate people for financial gain.  I don't think very highly of that to be honest, and I'll continue to highlight that when I think I see it.  Others seem to recognize that MMOs present an opportunity for good clean fun (in moderation) and friendship.  Fortunately, I see plenty of this still in the MMO genre, and I hope that this healthy part of the business can grow, while those who have a mind towards deception or exploitation will wither and fade away.

It is interesting to see everyone talking about the community of SWG before the mess started. I played Beta and Pre-CU/NGE. I was an armorsmith. I remember standing in my shop crafting armor and people woutd stop by to buy some . On a satureday you could see as many as four or five people standing wating on Armor. I remember them all standing around swapping stories, PVP battles and tales of  exploring. Many a hunting group startied there and many an adventure. That was the community I remember.. We all learned about the community, about cities, about the popular cantinas or about other players. All standing in my shop. I have not found a game since that captured that sense of community.

Glad to hear it :).  Other SWG veterans I know have also come to love that game for the world and the sandbox elements.

God these threads ruin my good moods, they remind me that the awesome game that captivated me and served as a drug addiction to me will never be again. Swg used to be so awesome playing it was like a roleplay but you didn't even know you were roleplaying.

exploring in the game always ended up with a great story of discovery or epic death, still the only game that ever kept me up for more than 72 hours straight, I wish i could be the first to kill a krayt dragon on ahazi again.

Ya I RP my carfters, I ran a mall all by myself, used to craft for the new player. I loved to Deco, and had one of the most visited malls on my server during the CU. I used to catch people just hanging out in my mall, lol one time I logged in downstairs, and caught two people cybering upstairs. Hehe, ahhh the good old days. Well Im playing EVE, and it has that WTF do I do now feel that I like. Plus its a sandbox, in anycase I hope you all can catch that old feeling we all had with this game again.

Side note, if you ever visit Sunrunner my malls still thier, when you port into theed, travel up the river and at the end of the lake thiers a guild hall, left it as a museum, it has some stuff from the old days displayed. And on the hill thiers a large naboo, its open to the public, it has the best view in game. You can see a 360 view of most of the map and theed looks great from my house on the hill.
