"Age of Conan isn't perfect yet, by any means, but the game is finally living up to its early promise."
I'm sure the trolls that haven't touched in in almost a year will still dig up the same failed arguements that no longer work now.
Well, I thought it was over instanced, had a terrible combat system, pretty dull content, and I didn't much appreciate being lied to(on the verge of scammed) when I bought the game. Now with the possible exception of the dull content, I don't think any of my other arguments for thinking the game was crap have changed much.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike Loved: Star Wars Galaxies Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Got to agree with this, I'd call the combat system repetative with far too much button mashing even for my taste! Post Tortage content slowly degraded like a can of beer left open all night until by the time you get to the end it's a flat lager. Too many zones, too much instancing of zones, too many instances in zones, I don't see this ever changing.
AoC is a sub par CORPG that just isn't capable of being a true MMORPG nor does it deliver on any of the promises made at launch for which I purchased it.

Sounds like you're describing conan from about 7 months ago and not present day.
The combat system is a lot less repeative and a lot more unique and interesting then any present day MMO on the market imho.
You're overdoing the instancing issue although it would be nice if it was one large contiguous world.
Wait and try it when 1.05 comes out. You'll come to the same conclusion that most do once they give the game a second look - "Damn I remember this game being horrible. This game is fantastic!"
Seriously though give it a shot with 1.05. They did get a huge boost in population during Dec and the first part of this year. The trial and win back seems to working to so far.
Good read. final comments are spot on: "My cursor hovered uncertainly over the Tempest's character panel for a moment - but really, there was little doubt in my mind. Age of Conan isn't perfect yet, by any means, but the game is finally living up to its early promise. It's intense, entertaining and rewarding to play - and bringing a third character up to the level cap is looking like a pleasure rather than a chore. If it can sustain this rate of improvement - and that is a big "if" - it won't be long before Funcom has one of the best MMOs in the world on its hands."
For the console world yes Funcom has got a good MMO on its hands. It's average in the Pc gaming world.

Describe what changes they've made to reduce the button mashing exactly. It may be the best combat system in your opinion but there are many more that disagree, trust me.
Overdoing the instancing issue? Are you serious? It is a constant irritant, it craps on grouping and any sense of immersion and everbody including yourself dislikes it. It wasn't dubbed "Age of Loading Sceen" for nothing you know.
AoC can never be fantastic due to it's core game mechanics and how the entire game revolves around instancing, much the same as Guild Wars does. They went from 800k at launch to probably less than 100k now for good reason, people don't leave because it's a good game. If they iron out the bugs it won't matter because if I wanted to play Guild Wars I would have bought it and not had to pay a subscription. Also my son has an Xbox 360 and I can play Lord of the Rings Conquest Online if I want, which beats AoC in every department including graphics.
If I buy an MMORPG I want to play an MMORPG, not an expensive CORPG. That is what it boils down to for most of the people that have and still play AoC. Even you admit it and would prefer a real open world, we all wopuld but Funcom knows better, right?

The combat system is somewhat new in the genre. Combos are redused from the long(many buttonpushed to finnish) to less(think they redused it by 1) If you dont like combos you can play a caster witch still uses the standard one push action system. Second: the instancing is a design choice. Some accept it; some does not. Its a reather a tradeoff. Many games use instancing; not only guild wars. DDO comes in mind(as it has loads of loadingscreens); warhammer has it to some degreee(lot less than AoC but still there) Rest I see as personal opinions. For me; the immersion is better with instancing(its tradeoff) since you can have much more involing scenes played out(without Haxxleetor running around you yelling "BUYGOLDPLIXXZX". Second after tortage the instancing become less freequent. And If/when AoC gets a good economy running it is nice to share the same economy with many players(more players per server due to instancing). Combat system is nice and more involving(for melee). I tried to go back to the old "hit one button" system and it was just to uninvolving(for me). The content; its good for me; I have leveled up to level 50 now doing nothing but soloquest(its a test to see how far content goes). At level 50 I do get new area with new quests so would at least hit 55 with what I get and then its ymirs pass and that would put me up to 60+; new area so prob hit late 60 before I need to go out of my way to find quests. Also the graphics and the fataily makes it seem more brutal and; for me; fun to play(tired of cartoonish elves and dwarfed tbh)
And with all the endgame dungdeons designed for groups/raid at endgame I am looking forward to go through them with my guild. Heard some of the bosses are fun fights.
Rdlaban has pretty much summed AOC up in a fair manner.
The combat system is a matter of taste. All games require you to button push. AOC is no different in that respect. However, AOC's combo system has been streamlined to create more fluidic combat. And they've actually succeeded in doing that in my own opinion.
Quests are only now missing in the 67 - 70 range and 75+. But the latter is already being sorted in the form of the Commons District which has been opened on the Test server whilst they work on it. Whilst the former could be covered over with having solo versions of the resource zone dungeons and a few more quests and floors added to the villas. For now though, a few rounds of completly wiping out the Villas will get a player from 67 - 70 very easily.
The whole "instancing" aspect is just a matter of a frame of mind. Personally I don't dwell on it because I've got things to do in the game. I don't see that many loading screens. However, suggestions have been made to the devs about creating multi-zone areas that are not bordered by mountain ranges in order to remove some of the feeling of being "boxed in".
1.05's fundamental changes to stats and itemisation interaction will hopefully provide the progression and incentives that has been sorely lacking in the game. The revamp to the gem crafting and gems system will help to bolster and enrich the economy, which again has been lacking in the game. With regards to graphics, we all know about dx10, but even dx9 is getting a little tweaking here and there. In 1.05 the shadows are much darker in the dx9 client, which even playing the dx9 client more enjoyable.
All in all, Patch 1.05 will help AOC shrug off some of the negative aspects that have been hanging around its shoulders since launch.

Sounds tempting but I dunno. Don't want to waste 3hrs and be disappointed.
AOC fell to the classic quote:
"You only get one chance to make a first impression".
And my first impression of AOC was *not* good.
