My brief Darkfall Review

FlarinstarFlarinstar Member Posts: 84

Darkfall Online is a fabulous game with focus for the avid PvPer. The game is truely a sandbox and while it may not have as much fluff as other sandbox games such as UO, there is always something to do. Now while you may have heard that the game is ridden with bugs, lag, and hackers; you are mistaken. I live on the east coast and my ping is generally between 75-150. I have yet to encounter a bug and I have been playing since closed beta. Well the only bug was some trees on my clans island not being choppable but this was quickly fixed. As for hackers, I have encountered one hacker throughout my days and we had him banned within a couple of hours.

The gameworld is extroadinary. Land mass varies so much without having to have seperate zones. The game world is absolutely huge which allows you to escape from people but remember you are truely never alone or safe. Some one is always lurking! PvP is fantastic and actually takes a fair amount of skill. Yes if your naked fighting some one in full plate you are going to have a difficult time but if you are truely that good and can dodge their swings you have the ability to win the battle. Mounted combat is fantastic and the best done in any MMO to date.

Clan pvp and seiging is absolutely amazing and truely epic. I joined one of the larger pvp guilds in the game who had a massive city on one of the major island. Our clan also had many ally guilds in the immediate area and enemies on the other side of the island. There was a constant struggle for control over the island territory and our actions affected the entire game. Politics are truely what sway the direction of Darkfall. Every city is different and done very well.

There are a few downsides to Darkfall. The game is very time consuming and at early stages in the game it is difficult to jump on for 30 minutes and enjoy yourself. This is due to the fact that at early stages it is difficult to acquire enough gold/gear/etc to be able to make a quick PvP run. You often times have to work for awhile before you are geared up to have some major fun. Though, after about 2 weeks of playing I found myself in a comfortable possition where I had several sets of high end armor/weapons with plenty of food and arrows at my disposal. I could log in for 30 minutes, make a quick PvP run to enemy lands and log off satisfied.

Darkfall is what you make of it. The game is extremely fun and open ended. It brings back the old rushes you got in early Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot. If you make good friends you will have a great time garunteed. Playing solo is much more tedious in early stages but after you put in some hardwork it is extremely fun and rewarding to play alone.

I think we were headed for some kind of M. Night Shyamalan ending there.

Like "Then he wakes up in the hospital and finds he was in a coma for the last eight years!"

    And he's an alien!

And then the pink unicorns got married had baby unicorns and lived happily everafter....

Are you sure you were playing df and not watching fantasia?

Nice, finally a good impression by a Darkfall player that actually joined a Clan, etc. I've seen a lot of reviews written by pure noobs that didnt even join a clan. So they couldnt tell us anything about City and sieging. At least you took the time to experience what the game was really aimed at rather then farm mobs all day long

If the game is so fabulous, AV is a fool not releasing it to mass audience.

So is the game stinky? or the developer stinky?

    Or both?

Aventurine is a small company, they are just releasing it in steps because they cannot handle a big one, fine by me because I only need 1 account to play anyway.

    Good review :)

    Good review :)

A small company, so I should be very wary of their quality of services.  Should I also expect subpar everything else from AV.  So I should not be paying them anything but subpar sub fees?

The OP's attempt at satire was kinda lame.

DF is not without its problems, and to paint a 100% rosey picture is silly. Players will need to overlook the flaws and focus on the good points of the game ( which will hopefully improve ).

If you know what to expect there is no problem.

    It has everything I wanted:

    - Stable client

    - Full loot pvp

    - Skill system

    - FPS style combat

I sense a very high level of sarcasm with the OP.

Always popcorn material to read the reactions of the fanbois after that.

    1.  Stable client -  Yes, because the game is so simplistic.  I could program pong and the client would be 100% stable.

    2.   Full loot pvp -  Except for the fact that over half of the people you fight will be naked with their newbie weapon.  Yes, you have a slight advantage when fighting them (assuming you wear gear).. but you gain nothing if you do kill them.   Watch all the videos out there, notice all the naked people?

    3.    Skill system -  It's not really a skill system...  1-24 do absolutely nothing... and then at 25 you get a huge bonus... then 26-49 do nothing, and then at 50 you get a huge bonus.    That is NOT a skill system, that is 'leveling'.   Also gaining skills is very whacked... you don't gain skills by playing... you gain skills by unattended macroing while you aren't playing.   Anybody who thinks DF has a skill system has never played UO

    4.  FPS style combat -  A very primative combat system compared to real FPS games.   It's like if Counterstrike was made in 1999.   It's kinda like the skill system and UO.  Anyone who played UO would laugh at the skill system in DF... just like anyone who played a FPS made in the last 3 years would laugh at the FPS system in DF.

I played UO and I think you are wrong on many accounts. People macro'ed their ass off in UO. Did we play the same game? You never macro'ed on the Training dummies in UO? How bout in your house?

And of course most scrubs will be naked because they just got ganked. People want to make big issue over naked people but this comes with the terriority. In EVE, I am a vet but when going through dangerous areas I fly shuttles and frigates. I'm not going to risk my good stuff to some random ganksquad. I will only risk my good stuff for my friends & Alliance

It suffers from some techinical issues. Initially there was massive queues in which they worked out. People are reporting crashing during sieging. This should be resolved before they go 'live'

Animations in 3rd person can use some work. Granted, I complain even about Male blood elf animations in WoW (their jump animation is only like 2-3 frames). But here, I think they should fix the way characters rotate around in 3rd person view when sword, etc is in hand. I most games, you 'pivot' around in a circle. In DF, your guy just like rotates like he;s levitating. That should get fixed

Some sound issues like when a guy is getting clubbed.

Gameplay itself is solid and combat is refreshing. Kinda reminds me of Age of Chivalry but with a little more depth due to being able to use Arrows, etc

Has some major UI issues though or maybe just super hostile to noobs

These issues they could use some polish on before exposure to press.

So if I expect a developer who is unable or unwilling to update their sales brochure (in other words, feature list on their web) to accurately reflect their product; if I expect equal dishonesty in honoring the normal obligation of a MMO provider, if I expect ...

There surely is no problem, b/c I am not going to waste a dime or a moment of my gaming time on them.
