I am trying to decide betweenplaying WOW and EQ2, since this is the wow forum , I was wondering if anyone could tell me what will make WOW a better game?
I once met a Paladin, a man of pure virtue, a protector, a man who made me feel safe and secure when he was near me...... so I killed him.
There is nothing "unique" about wow. They dont have any kind of innovative new system or something. Like alot of other games were trying to do. However, they took normal MMO gameplay and improved it. It's not your "same ol same ol" MMO, yet at the same time it is. WHat really shines in the game is the balance in my opinion. With so many classes in a game like EQ2, i could only imagine the large amount of balance problems.
Basically, WoW is a "safety" MMO. I see very little problems with the game even during stress test. It was a very well polished and abalanced MMO.
I got to play wow in the stress test and LOVED it. the gameplay was a blast.
I have high hopes for EQ2 but honestly SOE's reputation could be better. They're really going to have to shine to bring back all the players they lost in EQ imo.
The main innovative aspect about WoW is that it's actually FUN! Almost every past MMORPGs were borring exp grinds (a few PvP exceptions though) and felt more like work then anything.
WoW actually feels like a fun game. No treadmill grinds, tons of cool stuff to do, AvH combat (PvP), battlegrounds, etc. all taking place within the greatest fantasy universe since LotR... Warcraft.
Pure and simple, this is the game (as many of you know from the stress test) that will spice up the MMORPG genre with pure fun.
Thx for all the replies. I think I may check out the game (Hopefully it will have an open beta). My thinking was the same as barbrx had mentioned SOE doesn't have greatest reputation right now. I'm afraid I'll start EQ2 and realize that most people are looking for exploits. I'm looking for something thats fun to play and not worrying about getting to a high level as fast as I can. It seems like I may fall off the fence to the WOW side, but i'm going to do a bit more research. Any other comments would also be appreciated. Thx again.

I havent played EQ2 and Im not planning to play it so I cant really help you with which one is better. I can tell you that WoW is amazing for beta and its better then some games that are finished out there!
You may not have to choose. My bet is WoW will release early. All the fence sitters will buy WoW, perhaps be bored with it in a month when they reach cap. Then buy EQ2 when it comes out and play for the long haul.
The leveling speed during beta was speed up. It was posted in the stress test forums that the speed will change for retail. But they did not say which way, my guess would be to slow it down. And yes people made it to L40+ during the stress test. Even if they do slow it down you will still have people that will max a char out in a month or so. But who cares let those peeps do it. So far from what I have seen of WoW it is fun leveling up a char at a normal rate. It will make no difference to me if it takes me 1 month or 6 months to max a char out. I play to enjoy the game not to be the most uber char on the server.
The devs never said the leveling speed is faster in beta. What they did say was that they may change the leveling speed for release, but that was a few months ago(unless they said something recently).
As for the original topic, it's really just a matter of preference.
If you want a fairly quick grind(assuming the leveling speed is the same for release), want some PvP, and don't have that great of a computer than WoW is your game
If you want a longer level grind, only care about PvE, and have a good computer, than EQ2 is your game.
As for me, I'm still undecided. I definetely like the gameplay of EQ2 better than WoW, and I have the computer to run it, has great grphics... but no PvP(for release) is a big downer for me.
WoW on the other hand has a shorter grind, which kind of makes up for the gameplay factor.. however I'm still not a big fan of the graphics, I guess I just prefer realism. PvP is a big plus for me.
If both games released now(assuming they both have the same amount of lag/bugs), I'd get EQ2, but it's still very close.
P.S. - I've been in beta for EQ2 for about 2 weeks, and played the 10 day stress test for WoW, so i've played each game about the same.
And sorry if this is written sloppy, the pres. debate is boring the hell out of me.

2. Larger populations, wider range of players including many new MMORPGers coming from other gaming genres
3. Easier on the hardware requirements
4. Company with a great reputation
5. No experience in this field - mmorpgs (the possibility of future problems with class balance issues, etc)
6. Different style graphics - more of a Disney World type fantasy feel over realism
7. Less choices in the actual avatar customer creation
8. PVP
9. Simpler system for combat
10. 3 Months to Max Out at level 60 for the casual player (unknown what Hero classes will be)
EQ2
1. Smaller population but mainly veteran MMORPGers
2. SOE who has had issues with customer service
3. More realistic graphics
4. Viable graphics for longer - they stretch the envelope in a way that requires a serious hardware commitment
5. More involved combat system (*speculation based only on the posts about the combat wheel, openings system, etc...)
6. More options for character avatar customization
7. 8 months + to max level (*speculation) and more of a grind
8. 5 years experience with maintaining a mmorpg and all the issues that arise (hopefully they have learned a great deal)
~~~
In summary, I think EQ2 will be for you if you are willing to put in the greater time and hardware requirements to be successful and WoW will be for you if you are a little less serious (in time and commitment) about it and the "fun factor" is your biggest criteria.
There's a difference. When you reach the level cap in WoW, you'll be a high-ranking figurehead in the war between Alliance and Horde, ready to take on a Hero class.
When you reach the level cap in In EQ2, well..... ummm..... Meh? I guess you could look back on all the months you just spent courageously fighting computer-generated monsters (Great way to describe EQ2 BTW - a long haul)
To the original poster: When it comes down to it, try it for yourself in Open Beta. Thousands of people have already played it and are very excited about it (myself included).
Personally, it'll take a lot (well, a miracle) before I commit myself to an SOE product but even if SOE didn't exist, WoW is just an incredible game. It won't suit everyone, because nothing does, but IMO it has that X factor that all true classics have.
I'm still in 2 minds of EQ2 or WoW, but i'll most likely end up playing EQ2 i personally want a game that will last me for a couple of years than 6 months and then bored.
EQ2 does have the any class race combo which will be fun. but WoW does have the different classes and abilitys.
Thx everyone. There is lots of info there for me to think about. I will probably try out the betas (if i can ) and then decide from there. But why are people mentioning about being bored with WOW after 6 months. What will cause this to happen, and why would EQ2 stay exciting for 2 years?
Some misinformed people seem to think that longer grindfests will keep people player longer then shorter, fun, engaging progession that WoW has. They also seem to forget the huge amount of "stuff" to do in WoW (PvP, crafting, raids, dungeons, exploring, etc.)
Don't worry, WoW is here to stay... no doubt about it (just look at how long Diablo 2 has been lasting with millions of people playing it).
As has been mention, EQ2 has a much longer leveling curve to hit the current cap. I said it in another thread, and I still think it's an apt comparison, but between WoW, and EQ2, the best I can think is to compare them to Diablo 2 and Morrowind, respectively.
Not a perfect point for point match, but I think you get the idea.
I honestly think that it will be the other way around. EQ2 will get rushed, released first, full of bugs (just like all of their past products). Those who find EQ2 to be nothing more than what their original game is/was , besides the extra eye candy will drop their subscription and go to WoW.
I liked WoW when I got to stress test, it was more finished in beta than some games that have been released. I liked Warcraft and Warcraft 3 and Blizzard puts out very good games.
I played Everquest for a little more than 3 years and loved it at first, it was Magical, Immersive and Fun. Until a bunch of people got high level toons then the game changed to an "uberfest" You know, if you dont have the best armor, weapons or the most money you were lower than pond scum type of mentality. So..... I was one of the 1.5 million people that played and left it.
I'm still on the fence, sort of. I'm actually excited at playing EQ2, even preordered it. It looks to be both great looking and fun, they changed a lot of things that went bad in EQ. Since I liked WoW and since I'm excited about EQ2 I'm not going to decide, I'm going to play both...........
"You and your kind have ruined your own lands ! you'll not ruin mine ! "
Same here i liked EQ and really enjoyed it, i've pre-ordered EQ2 and also WoW, I'll end up playing the both. a lot of what i hearded WoW level curve atm is fast. if it stays like that for release then it will be a nice change of pace now and then, but EQ2 has my attention atm.
The review of WoW posted on main page today, said that quite a few players he meet in-game seem to be 12 to 14 and very immature. guess well have to wait till release to see if it is that bad.
It soundes like alot of people are going to play both, and I may fall into that category, but like i said earlier I would like to beta them to see which one I like.
Before any wars/flames, etc start.
It will be personaly taste that's really going to be the biggest difference.
Also pure horse power of your computer will play a huge factor in which to buy.
Do you want an "uber" graphics engine, get EQ2, if you want to be able to run almost everything in "uber" high detail, get WoW.
I would also suggest doing some reading... other then that.
Highest player at the end of ST was around/close to 50, I saw a level 46 on my server during ST.
