Biggest difference between a modern MMO and a MUD:  I could play a MUD for a couple of years, get to know the admins, and then become a programmer/Wiz/Creator/whatever-your-mud-called-it, and actually create content of my own.  I personally coded up five different classes, created a couple thousand rooms, and made up events that the players loved (wars, a 'highlander' pvp event, etc.).   The greatest satisfaction came from seeing people use my areas and play my classes, and look to me for new content.  MMO's have never given me even an ounce of satisfaction close to that.

Oh, and teaching others to code and approving their content.  That was a blast as well.  Working as a true team to create a world... MMMmmMMmm...

When I play an MMO I see the faults and know that there is no way I could ever come close to affecting a change on them.  They are there, I'm just a player among thousands or millions of other players, and I mean nothing at all.  Here is my $15 a month, now I'll just play in your little world and mind your little rules and some day leave your game and no one will miss me.  Blah.

It was nice to be on a MUD with a small, tight community, and everyone knows everyone.  You log in your pvp character and people either know you as their defender or run from you in fear.  Again, while guilds/clans help to bring about a sense of community on MMOs, it does not compare to the sense you had while playing a MUD where EVERYONE knew who you were.

The fact that a game is text only, or limited in visuals, is not an obstacle or a reason to hate MUDs.  An imagination, good coding, and a good community is all it takes to enjoy yourself on a MUD.  Of course, I enjoy reading a good book more than watching a movie, so maybe I'm a dying breed.

Some days I miss it.  Eight years on one was a long time, and a lot of fun.

I would walk from the temple past the burnt ruins of the city, damaged from a forgotten war. There would be an opening that ya would only see from paying attention to the description of the room. I would enter this room that was so dark that ya wouldn't see the shady merchant at the counter. He offered elfcakes and fresh daggers that were the "calling card " of that house.

Out the back door and through a few gates brought ya to the backroom of a resturaunt. A picture hangs on the wall depicting the owner sneaking past a dragon to loot his treasure. Rumor has it that the man who owned the resturaunt snuck past the creature invisible and took the most valuable gems in a chest to fund this resturaunt. He was also the Moon God's patron saint..

This character was my uncle in real life and he passed some years back. I have since logged in several times and wandered his world he created on there..when he was alive and I haven't seen him for a while I may just drop somethin' weird (or curse, hehe) into a drawer just to mess with him..sometimes that's how non-human friendships are, hehe.

Some features of MUDs can't be touched by an MMO I guess..

MUDs are deep and are one of a few inspirations that lead me to develop a 3D MMORPGFPS. IMHO, there is no reason you cannot capture the immersion of a text-based MUD in a Graphical MMORPG. The power is in the text and in many cases a thousand words is worth a 1000 pictures (in the minds eys of the beholder). My idea is simple: Develop and embed a full powered MUD/command set within the Chat & Dialog Systems to support deep interactive story telling. Coupled with a full powered GUI System, First Person Shooter Combat Engine, RPG and RTS Mechanics, and 5 layers of Player-Creation - I believe I'll have a game engine platform to truly produce something unique.

I have never, nor will I ever found any immersion close to this in any MMO.
Flame me all you want, but I thought I would inform you all of meaningful gaming experiences. I keep reading about people wanting them, and, if you take the time to check out a good MUD, you'll thank me later.

Immersion is over-rated. Good hack-n-slash is much more fun. I have played a lot MUDS before MMORPGs are available (many diku & diku variant) but once real MMORPG comes out, i never look back.

MUDs just do not haev the same thrilled in hacking & slashing and it is no fun when you cannot see you new shiny loot worn on your body.

Its like watching a black and white silent movie.   It would take a real whacko to prefer that nowadays.  It just doesn't hold up.  You're not cool for going retro;)

Well I guess its personal preference, Id rather sit down with some friends and play a game of DnD than play an MMO with them any day.  Its all about the Role Playing for me and not many games have that much any more everyone is always spamming stuff OOC anymore.   Hopefully  Vanguard is where all the RP's went.  I miss interacting with people in character.

Wow sounds kind of like morrowind but better without the graphics, please tell me what game this is? I have tried text but just cannot get into them, I have been spoiled by consoles since the 80s, and even pc but now I have a older computer so all I can run are games like diablo 2 or ragnorak online.

Most of the muds I tried where boring, except wheel of time but something about it drew me away, I like a good balance of freedom but a little guidence here and there once and a while.

There is something I just realized about these text games though, if you play a text game you have all this freedom and you type in all these different things but why would you do this if you can use your imagination to write your own story? It is essientially the same thing minus the in depth details of the world and numbers from combat and etc, I agree it is very cool but I cannot see how it is a game if you choose everything you might as well use your time and actually create instead of only half creating on someone elses virtual world.

In my experience games are meant to be played and have a set path, some games have more freedom which is cool but they have graphics to immerse yourself in and there is always a certain amount of skills you need to master to challenge you. It just kind of seems like a waste I could be wrong of course, it is just something I realized.

I suppose. I used to play D&D and no more. It is too cumbersome, too slow, too small in scope and almost any MMO is better.  Well, I am not big on RP anyway.
