Hey, Ive played countless MMOs, And ive found that crafting in an mmo is one of my favorate ways to play the game. Recently i havent found any new MMOs with crafting-sentric economics. So i ask for your assitence...
The MMO should have:
1. Extensive crafting resource gathering, No WOW crafting for me.
2. Preferably, The ability to effect the environment, Such as in Wurm Online.
3. Magic, Yeah when im not crafting im flinging fireballs or cureing my Party members.
4. Build anywhere, Even if its only in designated areas...(so you can build int his big empty space but not on top of the NPC town.)
5. Good Guild or grouping, Whats a crafter without Partners.
6. 3D, Text is fun, but not what im looking for.
So if you can think of MMOs that are close to this feel free to post maybe leave a link or small personal experence on it...
Edit:
Sorry i suppose a list of game sive played would have helped...
SWG - Played it its a ruin of what i hear is its old formar glory, dead citys everywhere. i played it for 4 months anyways just for the crafting it has now
Wurm online - no magic/ and a 2D game pretending to be 3D, Other then that exactly what i want.
All of the wow copys, "grind level, hit nodes, use recipe, Who needs a keybourd?"
many of the games i see mentioned ive played to many to list... "but the posts are appreciated"
Finally, I mention other things not related to crafting because crafting is the most importent part of my Perfect MMO, not the only part. id play wurm if this wasnt true.

Dragon Age also features digital prostitutes, lesbians, rather clean three way sex, inter-species erotica, war, decapitation, thinly veiled social commentary, alcohol, drug addiction, slavery, racism, sexism, sexual harassment, genocide, the death of children, demons, and more blood than a vampire drinking game." -Dana Massey

Well I dont think there is any MMO that has it all.
DaoC has some of it but not all, AoC has some of it but not all and EQ2 has some of it but not all.
"You are the hero our legends have foretold will save our tribe, therefore please go kill 10 pigs."
i dont know what its like now as i havent played in years, but the crafting in the original star wars galaxies was just amazing and i have longed for such extensive crafting in an mmo since then. eq2 also used to be good at release, but nothing compares to the resource gathering method and component crafting of SWG.
another i havent played in a loooong time is A Tale In The Desert. while the game itself is fairly rudimentary, the game is sandbox crafting at its core, and quite compex if you are willing to spend the time learning all of the nuances to the game. it really is a true crafters delight.
didn't I here that istaria is a great game for the crafters?
Yes old style SWG is probably the game nearest to what the OP talks about. Crafting was incredible, each crafter developed his own personal recipes over time through hard work and experimentations and successful crafters became famous with people wanting their goods because they were simply the best. I remember one armor crafter that had a month long waiting list of customers because her light armors were so amazing.
And the game also had you building anywhere outside the prebuild cities, where you both made personal buildings, created towns with all the facilities needed and you could make PvP bases for battles.
Sadly that game does not exist anymore . . . .

Darkfall is the only viable crafting MMOG currently.
There are MMOGs that used to be great for crafting before they were changed for the worse like classic EQ and SWG, and MMOGs that would be good choices if they had healthy playerbases like Istaria aka Horizons or Ryzom. As you already seem to understand, crafters need a healthy playerbase to trade their crafted goods otherwise what's the point in crafting. The demand for Darkfall currently exceeds their server capacity.
Ever tried EVE? It has all that you asked for.
I agree with a lot of the above posters. EQ2 and AoC have significant crafting in place. Darkfall is totally dependent on crafting, but its not very complex.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)

Excuse me, but how you can construe that mess they call crafting in Darkfall as good is beyond me. To even consider it is a greater absurdity than I can imagine. I could spend pages describing all that is wrong with it, but just not worth wasting the time. Obviously these posters did not try much crafting in Darkfall to make these comments.
Actually the elderly UO still has decent crafting, just gets expensive getting the magical equipement and scrolls needed for high end crafting.
SWG had a really innovative and probably the best crafting system I've ever seen in a MMORPG, but I haven't actually played Eve. I'm also not sure how SWG is totday, as I quit after playing it for 5-6 months.

You obviously have never heard of Eve then.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
VG has deep crafting but its a tremendous grind. If you want a deep...full time job..it's VG.
Vanguard might be one... when I used to play it long ago (but I have a personal dislike to all Sony products... don't ask it's personal). LotR seems to fit the bill (or at least in regards to crafting but might be more limited than Vanguard). Neocron has simple crafting system, however, getting "special/rare" tech parts off mobs to make "super weapons" is not easy, the mobs are specific, hard to kill, and the drop rate is really difficult to get what you might want and neeed for the "special" tech parts.
As for games that are upcoming (for the future). Fallen Earth sounds like it will have a promising crafting system. Check out the dev. videos for yourself to see.
In the thread title, you say you're a crafter. In the post text, you say you want a bunch of things that are unrelated to crafting. If you want a mostly combat game with crafting a minor side activity, a number of games can do that. If you want good crafting and good combat, you'll probably have to get them from two different games: A Tale in the Desert for the crafting, and something else for the combat.
I haven't played some of the games mentioned for crafting above, but I have played Vanguard, and can tell you that Vanguard doesn't have a deep crafting system. It has one crafting puzzle and a bunch of different skins on it. Performance in that one crafting puzzle is almost entirely dependent on level and gear, rather than what you actually do in the puzzle. If that's all you want from crafting in a game, fine, but don't call yourself primarily a crafter.
Quizzical....what would your crafting recommendation be ?
If you want a deep crafting game, then A Tale in the Desert might be the only option. You could split ATITD's crafting system into a dozen disjoint parts, each of which would by itself have more depth than Vanguard's entire crafting sphere (plus harvesting, for good measure). It doesn't have combat at all and it's not for everyone, but for purely crafting, it's probably the best there is.
I'm going with the EVE recommendation; it's a very good MMOG with the added benefit that you're sharing a world with about 5-10 times as many people as on your average WoW server .. it could well be in the running for the most populated game-world in the whole genre.
Down side is that it's sci-fi and ship based, which isn't to everyone's tastes.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
I'd recommend trying Vanguard. For the reasons listed below and also because it has a free demo that allows you to level up to 10 in adventuring, crafting and diplomacy spheres as well as the first tier in harvesting. By doing this, a free trial player can see how the three spheres weave together.
1. Harvesting is a big in Vanguard. Mining, Quarrying, Lumberjacking, Skinning, Reaping.. one other too (Fishing isn't fully integrated yet). Five Tiers in each that include common, rare and ultra-rare resources. In addition, there are an almost infinite amount of bonus materials that can be obtain. Yields and bonuses are driving by the quality of harvesting gear and equipment. The true crafter and vertically integrate their trade from raw materials to finished goods. Crafting itself is very interactive and isn't just button pushing, skill points and attributes make a huge difference.
2. There are some newly introduced crafting quests including the Banishers quest line. I wouldn't say these crafted items change the enviroment, but certainly change the way players interact with the environment.
3. Vanguard is a pure MMO. 16 classes, made up of healers, casters, fighters etc.
4. Crafter build housing, guild halls and sea vessels are huge in Vanguard. The housing is only in designated housing plot areas, but the really cool thing is that they are NOT instanced. If you build a home, it is always there. If you leave it unlocked, people can waltz through at anytime. The crafter made furniture, rug, ornament, decoration market is a huge trade. Although there are maybe 18 different style houses, the way one chooses to decorate is nearly infinte. Crafters can also make sloops, caravels and Galleons. Once again, a tremendous difference in styles etc. Galleons and Guild Halls take tremendous crafter effort.
5. Guilds are always looking to round out their crafter ranks. There are many types of crafters and specializations. Some guilds only exist to craft. A goal of some players is to become level 50 in adventuring, level 50 in crafting, level 50 in diplomacy and have their harvesting skills at 500. This allows a unique ability to complete quests that involve all spheres.
6. Vanguard is a gorgeous 3D world. Bad news is, it requires a decent computer, something newer than 2 years old if you want to play with all the bells and whistles. It's fun to watch crafters in their workshops working the forge when all of a sudden fire comes belching out and smoke wafts up into the air while the crafter cusses and stomps his foot because he just lost his raw materials, catalysts and supplies
Ryzom is a crafters dream game. For now its free (and has been for months) but will soon be 10.95 monthly.
You obtain crafting components three ways: harvesting, mobs and buying from other players / npcs. Harvesting is its own mini game with results being determined by location, quality, skill level, seasons, what skills you use to harvest with and what armor you're wearing (light is prefered). Seasons affect what items you can harvest and what mobs appear in certain areas therefore affecting crafting. There are rare components also. You can enhance items you craft and add comments.
The components you use determine the stats and quality your item will have.
You can see how components will affect your crafted item in real time. So if you're using a raguss hide and decide to use a rendor hide you'll see what stats will be affected immediately if you decide to switch.
There is armor, melee weapon, range weapon, jewel and shield crafting. I'm still on the tutorial island so there could be more crafting areas available at higher levels. Levels are determined by skill not character level.
You'll need to switch crafting tools depending on what you want to craft. Each crafting action such as armor crafting has its own tool.
Crafting actions are bought then you can buy plans. For example, to craft magic amplifiers (you can cast with bare hands but amps give damage a boost) you'll need the melee weapon crafting 1 action and the amplifier plan. A plan will tell you what component type you need but not what components to use. Thats up to you. A plan may call for a trigger component but you can use tons of various items as the trigger. Clicking on looted items in your inventory will tell you how that item can be used in crafting.
Someone told me once in chat the skills offered in ryzom branch into 50 or 60 other specializations with a skill max of 250 in each so there is plenty of crafting to do. I could be wrong about the amount of branches. Someone correct me if I am.
If I were you I'd try ryzom since it is temporarily free. You can enter the tutorial island and go straight to the crafting trainer. There are no racial stats so choose any race you want.
I've been playing Roma Victor. It has alot of crafting to it from planting wheat fields too making homes to weapons and much more.
EVE Online has the most complex crafting system with player run economy. But if you're seeking for a fantasy game, give Vanguard a try.
And...now the challenge is...a FTP with great crafting ? Would Roma Victor be one of those ? Any have other ideas ?
Eve is a game that people tend to love or hate- but it has far and away the most amazing "crafting" of any virtual world I've ever seen.
Resourse harvesting, resource refining, research, invention, real living economy ("market PvP"), and now things like reverse engineering.. not only is player industry in Eve great, it's also absolutely critical to the continued operation of the game. Things like T2 ships only exist in the game when players build them.. you can't buy equivalent items from NPCs.
Word of warning: you have to be able to tolerate a steep learning curve, a pretty unforgiving world (PvP can happen pretty much anywhere and you can lose everything you have by being careless), and unless you are a hard sci-fi fan you probably won't like it. You are your ship for all practical purposes.
For those of us that refuse to play any more games with elves, orcs, goblins, or dwarves Eve is great : )

I've been playing EVE since 2005 and just left a few days ago. For crafting its really static unless your is a corp that has at least 100 'active' players. If you try and solo such as building a charon or another large ship which needs 100k in trit plus other resources ontop of that too complete. And if you want too build the small bpo stuff like ammo well lots of ppl sell that as well.
You really need a large corp to be able to feel apart of something and most corps runs it like a job even the 'fun' corps need miners too build ships for the corp and your treated like a mining bitch. So playing solo or whatever turns your crank all you do is fly too the astroid belt mine and fly back unload ore and do it again rinse and repeat 100x 's
Sure the ccp has done alot of work patching bugs updating missions and graphics.
Untrue. I pretty much solo these days and I've been making billions inventing and building T2 battleships. I never mine, just buy the minerals. Also buy the advanced materials to build the T2 components.
Fun part was doing the 0.0 exploration to support the invention runs. Eve crafting static? Doubt many would agree with you there.
