Finally something different! I love horror genre, and obviously I adore Lovecraft books: I have high hopes for this new mmorpg. I'm also looking forward next CCP/WhiteWolf mmorpg about World of Darkness universe. Look what the bats dragged in !!! P.S.: lots of lulz in this thread, especially on the first page. Thanks for all the fun you bring me guys.
Different from what? AoC? Nope. Looks to me like someone did not read the post immediately preceding theirs.
So yeah, The Secret World's Lovecraft influence is not a new element in Funcom's Modus Operandi
QFE. This thread is old news.

I am currently playing City of Heroes which just released a system which allows players to make their own missions. There are already a dozen or so missions which are clearly advertised as being based on the Cthulhu mythos. Some of them are quite good.
Clearly there are many HPL fans playing mmorpgs. I think this would be a good direction for TSW. But if it goes more in the direction of Buffy the Vampire Slayer then ... well ... I would play that too :-)
No it is not, it draws on some Lovecraftian themes is all. And unless we want the Lovecraft estate turning up at Funcom and demanding royalties its best not to perpetuate this idea.
I really really really hope there is no official connection to the Lovecraft Mythos, I would hate to see FunCom do to another IP that I love what they did to Hyboria.
As for Funcoms track record, time for another go around with the FunCom booster club I guess.
1. The Longest Journey + 2. Dreamfall Two games no one in the US outside of some industry geeks ever heard of, that weren't even MMOs anyways.
3. Anarchy Online Arguably the worst launch of any MMO in history. Over hyped, lost 90% of the players from initial sales in the first three months and never recovered. Limped along for a decade with less than 40k subs and without fixing some of the basic bugs that plagued it from the begining. Courtesy of the rabid fans who defend it to this day, it won some token awards for various expansions along the way.
4. Age of Conan - Another terrible launch, although not nearly as bad as AO. Excessive hype, loss of many players in first three months, but admittedly not as bad as AO. At present limping along with minimal improvement and slowly losing players.
I'll brace for the flames now, but based on FCs record I have no hope whatsoever for TSW.
All of the above (except for the copypaste thing, i really don't care)
Turning amazing books into games is never an easy task and I really don't know any good "transcription" to the date. (any good book based game) That said Lovercraft's world, is one of the toughest to capture right. From funcon I would expect an action game where you shoot demons with a revolver and of course cthulhu would be a raid boss. (and 3 weeks after release it would still be misspelled Chutulu :P)
Lord of the Rings Online, in my opinion one of the top games out there, is a book based game. Perhaps you do not enjoy the game but that is no reason to say it is not a good book based game.

Anarchy Online is years in the past, if you are the same person you were 2001 one I don't admire you much. And you know that FUncom got more than one developer studio, so AoC und TSW are developed by different people?
And that launch of AoC showed that FunCom has changed oh soo much right? I think not.
Also, the "problems" FC had with AO (and again with AoC) were caused by bad management from the company execs, not the coding teams - so them changing means very very little.
Don't let me stop you though, join the lemming herd of overhype as you race towards the cliff of yet another FC conjob. Don't expect me to stop knocking FC though, as I consider them just about the worst company in the MMO market today...(aside from the likes of Tasos and Co). Gotta love any industry where a history of multiple sub-par products can be whitewashed away by the next round of slick talking though.
PS Yeah, I've changed since 2001..I didn't get lobotomized though, I can still recognize BS when I see it

Should be an interesting game. Any game that lets me kill demons and monsters of the mythic kind I'm all for.
The splash poster for the game has a cthulhu-esk monster about to do something nasty to the girl. Eat her. Probably.

I've read many lovecraft short-stories and his style is just unique. I hope the lovecraftian universe takes a big part in the game.
But other sources like mythology shouldn't get to short as wsell.
Ooooh, Delta green online
To bad they probably will use the level based system from AoC, but I will still play, I love COC/Delta green.
Gladly they already said that this game won't use any level-system.
