Apparently there will be no such thing as ninja looting in WoW.
Cut and Paste from the Patch Notes:
New Looting Methods
* Group Loot
When an item equal to or above the threshold (details on threshold below) is on a monster that is killed, everyone gets a pop-up box on their screen with the item and pass or roll options and a timer. Anyone who rolls, displays a number between 1 and 100, the highest roller of all those who choose to roll automatically gets the item. Anyone who waits until the timer expires automatically passes. Items below the threshold are taken care of by normal round robin rules.
* Need Before Greed
Same as group loot, except players who cannot use the item automatically pass.
* Threshold
This just determines the level of items that are affected by the methods above. If a party wants to set the threshold to blue items and are in group loot mode, then green items that are found will be taken care of by the normal round robin rules.
~~
So a group leader can form a group and set a threshold where "good" items are randomed. For those of you in Beta does this mean, once set, the item can't be Ninja'd? If so , nice, I like it.
~still playing EQ2 though

I'm just curious, myself, on the NBG one... what happens if nobody in the group needs the drop? Does it go into the group loot pool, is it lootable or does it vanish?
I finally got the patch done, this morning. Hope to be able to log in tonight and find out

My dog barks some. Mentally you picture my dog, but I have not told you the type of dog which I have. Perhaps you even picture Toto, from "The Wizard of Oz." But I warn you, my dog is always with me.

Zer bud, not sure I follow ya. When a person joins the group I would imagine it is clear at that point what the rules will be and they have the immediate decision to not play under those rules. If they are looking to be able to loot an item they can't use but can sell prior to equipping, they can either ask to change the loot or drop to find another where they can profit.
/wonder
Could someone explain to me what exactly "ninja-looting" is?

Ninja looting is taking loot when you kill a mob with out rolling for the drop and without talking to your group memebers to see who wants it.
The Need before greed thing is good.... Im guessing if no one in the group can use the said item it probabaly just goes by the regular round robin rules.
I think this is an excellent idea and may well set this game apart from all of its competitors.
I can not possibly relate to you in words the frustration one goes through when a person who does not have a need for a certain high level item is allowed to "ninja loot" from a corpse that belongs equally to all members of the group.
The need before greed setting would be a godsend especially in an equipment focused game such as WOW. It will revolutionize grouping in my opinion as it will take away doubt that people will be treated fairly even if they do not belong to the same guild as other team members.
Bravo WoW developers.......Kudos to you.

Definitely a good idea. Much better than a certain less than random lotto system which seems to enjoy giving the same person the vast majority of the drops, whether they can use them or no.
