Ok so I've been trying to follow Fallen Earth and Earthrise for a while now but the games keep getting me confused as to which is which?
I notice that both have a lot of forum topics where people are very dissatisfied with the development of the games. My question is of the two of them what are the MAIN differences?
Perhaps this has been discussed before but I havn't seen a topic on it yet... if there is one point it out to me and I'll be more than happy to read it!
Otherwise could we sum up the main differences between these two similar titles?
Comments
well from what I know is..
Earthrise -
2 main Factions (with sub factions) but also 2 other choices of being a criminal or nuetral
Smuggling of tech between one faction and another.
World Open PvP (with the exception of a few rare safe zones.)
Soft lock targeting.
Skill based advancement.
A technology post apoc island.
Dense crafting, You can create everything.
Fallen Earth -
6 factions
PvP instances (from what I understand)
FPS type combat (reticule must be over your target to score a hit)
Skill based advancement
A post apoc setting in the area of the grand canyon.
I do not know about the Crafting... So yeah.. Sorry
That is just a tib bit.. I am not really going to go into detail.
Thanks! I appreciate your input!
I was curious about the combat systems for both of them?
So you say that Fallen Earth has FPS ish Combat, would that be similar (in actual play style) to Fallout 3 / Oblivion / Darkfall ish controls then?
The reverse would be Earth Rise with their "soft lock targeting" would this compare to like Lineage?
More like EQ?
I don't really know what the term soft lock targeting implys I guess.
There's a combat vid of Earthrise that'll show you more of how their system works. Fallen Earth's system is more like a typical FPS/TPS system. You hit where you aim (provided that the range is short enough) but the damage is calculated by RPG means (stats, weapon damage and so on).
As I see it, the main differences between the games are that Fallen Earth is mainly based on PVE and exploration while Earthrise is faction/guild PvP, politics and economy. Both games include both, of course.
I agree though that the similarities are more striking than the differences.
If you like FPS games, then you will be disappointed in Earthrise's combat.
Simulating an FPS does not produce the fun of FPS combat.
So its basicly FPS vs Targeting classic RPG style?
That does make them seem different.
Re: PvP... Not instances per say, more like PvP area's that upon nearing/entering the player will be notified that they are entereing a PvP area and if they proceed they will be consenting to it, if they don't want to they need to turn around.
Re: Crafting... Think Pre-CU SWG Crafting for at least a general idea.
Well I've seen 3 types or maybe it can be considered two types w/ one w/ a sub-category.
For instance:
Soft-lock - cursor locks onto any target closest to your character. Besides Earthrise, the only other rpg i've played that had this was Two Worlds.
Point-N-Click "Auto-lock" (or even hotkey for some games to auto-lock on target) - this method is very popular in mmo from past to present (however that seems to be changing as gamers are evolving away from this method)
Free-lock(tm) - this is my own special term that I use for MMORPGs that use fps-style, manual targetting and/or using WASD as default movement keys. Such as some MMORPG like Darkfall, Neocron, and Fallen Earth.
Hope that helps you understand the differences.
Fallen Earth is a more 'our timeline' kind of post apoc game. It's based about 100 years in the future and common weapons are guns and nail bats... basically melee weapons start as trash crap you pick off the ground.
Earthrise is a much more futuristic post apoc game and has much more modern laser weapons.
Fallen Earth is more Mad Max style and Earthrise strikes me as very modern, high tech laser battles.

Oooo! I like how you explained that!
Thank you very much! Makes a lot more sense now.
Which game will have more of a sense of humor then I wonder...
I mean its not vital to gameplay by any means but it is flavor, I always liked WoW's humor but at the same time it sorta took away from its depth by being more satire than true to its RPG nature.
If that made any sense...
Anyway Thanks for your points too! So there will be more high tech battle armor in Earthrise and more bare bones just felt the taste of a nuke in Fallen Earth.
If anyone else has more insight into the differences between these two up and coming titles please feel free to post and leave some thoughts and comments!
I really would like to see more details on what is similar and what is different between these two.
This is the way I see them. Also, as mentioned, both the setting and the aiming/targeting are quite different.
I'm not sure about Earthrise's progression, but Fallen Earth is heavily quest-based (same old FedEx, kill 20 blahblahs, etc.). FE also has a level/skill hybrid system that is similar to Anarchy Online or Fallout 3, as well as crafting that is much like those two games.
I believe that FE is closer to release than Earthrise.

Ah! So FE is going to be more player driven it sounds like, while also maintaining a Quest driven style of play too.
That is pretty interesting.
Anyone have any details on Earthrise on these specific points? Like how quest driven is it and how much crafting is going to occur in this game?
Everyone has had a lot of good input thanks everyone!!

I followed Earthrise for a while, and one of the things I found interesting was that they were going to implement robotic-mech that your character can craft and fight pvp in. Sounded neat. But back then it was going to be free-lock system. And after spending considerable time in their OF, masthead caved-in to the pressure and decided on "soft-lock" aiming method. That put me off to the game immediately. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's just not my personal style, as I like Neocron's fps/rpg blending, and one I may add that worked out well for me. I'm hoping that FE doesn't cave-in to the pressure of people that simply don't like "free-lock" aiming methods for their MMOs. Hopefully they will remain "free-lock". If they change that, I may just have to go back to Neocron.
I totally agree with you on a personal level I really like "free-lock" as in I'm a huge fan of FPS style MMOs so far and of FPS RPG's in general, however I'm not totally against a lock on targeting system Ijust think it will feel a lot slower because of that...
That mech idea though is pretty spiffy! Very unique indeed!
Thanks for all your help!!

Well just to give the devil his dues, RF online did the "mech-bot" thing years ago. The Bellato race, a race of super-strong midgets, and a specific bellato class would be able to craft/construct a fighting mech to pvp in. Thing is that class turned out to be OP class of the game, w/ the de-buff/summoner for Cora (Angry Space-evles) coming as a close DPS second.
However, I haven't seen that done since, and maybe Earthrise will do it right.
As for Fallen Earth, I can't wait. If it plays anything like Neocron and/or Hellgate London, I'll be quit happy.
Awesome! Glad to hear so many folks are excited about these games!
I've been waiting for an MMO to break out of the fantasy niche ever since I quit SWG back in 2004 (november)
Always been a huge fan of the whole end of the world survival kinda thing, I really hope there will be zombies...
I'm a HUGE zombie fan..
Anyway, thank you very much for all your input! Very encouraging details!
Yes, FE has zombies. LOL. The FE diary talks about the one town having them. Hope you know about Left for Dead. Not an MMO but plenty of zombies.
I've played too much TF2 and L4D, old style MMO combat isn't tolerable anymore.
I know of actually 3 true MMOFPS games in development. I'm not counting Earthrise in those 3 after seeing the gameplay videos.
The three are:

OH when you said YES THERE ARE ZOMBIES I got goose bumps and there was an evil laugh for sure...
Wow now I'm psyched!

Fallen Earth isn't an FPS, it's a third person shooter :X

But ZOMBIES!!
Yay!
Anyway, so um my question to you sir is so there's no first person in it?
How do you see this effecting gameplay if that is true... I'm not against the idea I just think that it'd be nice to have an option.
Anyone?
It'll be like Gears of War, or so I hope.

Ooo good example, didn't think about Gears and how its 3rd person, good game too.
I hope its play control is as good!
Thanks for your imput! I feel like There are shaping up to be definitive differences between these two games!
Thanks everyone! Keep the thread going if you can think of any other similarities or differences we should be aware of!
Hmm, didn't really notice that before. I guess I'm OK with FE being a third person shooter. There isn't a toggle between first and third person? Should be easy for the devs to implement.

Most likely not.
