So you didn't play WoW, but somehow know that Runes of Magic is exactly the same as WoW... Interesting.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

I had a level 70 in WoW after TBC, and I now have a level 50 (max) in RoM. I can decidedly say that, while there are similarities in graphical quality, WoW =/= (is not equal to) Runes of Magic.

    1. Dual Class system - Nothing similar to WoW here.

    2. Grindability - If you try to just kill mobs to level, you're wasting your time in RoM. Mobs give 100-400 exp at higher levels, when the amount required to level nears 2mil. The daily quests, however, give 40-50,000 exp each, and you can do 10 dailies per day. WoW did not have such a system, and it was possible to grind 59-60 in vanilla WoW in a good hour and a half if I remember right.

    3. Races and Faction PVP - Only 1 race (so far) in RoM, rather than the 8/10 (I haven't played WoW in a long time) in WoW.

    4. Crafting - Crafting is actually difficult in RoM. Not to the extent of what I saw in Ryzom, but it is certainly a huge investment.

    5. Gear Modding - Nothing equivalent to the arcane transmuter in WoW that I can remember.

Ofc. RoM looked to WoW for inspiration, it's the logic thing to do with a game as RoM.

And they can't just copy it, that would infringe on copyrights/ip so there is some differences. I dont think the animations are one par with WoW yet.

But RoM is certainly the most interresting F2P I've ever seen.

I consider it unfortunate that RoM is a copy of a copy of a copy. It just doesn't always translate well imo.

Not a bad game tho -- Cheers

I would definitely echo the sentiment that it's a good alternative for people who enjoy some of the core mechanics of WoW, but don't want to pay $15 a month for it.

I do think it would be beneficial to point out some of the differences, although the OP may not have knowledge of all of them, having only played the WoW trial.  Mpcrawf pointed out a few, but didn't mention player and guild housing, which is conspicuously absent in WoW.  There are others that I'm sure more hardcore players may add as the thread grows.

Instead of "WoW-", perhaps the thread title should be changed to read "WoW+".

RoM is a mixture of a lot of mechanics done by other games before. Just a few to illustrate my point:

    1. Dual Class system with exp (tp) points to level up skills and special skills depending on class combination.

    2. Daily quest system to actually reduce the grind and give casual players the same chances as hardcore grinders.

    3. Weapon and Armor Power ups (+1 to +6)

    4. Weapon and armor rune slots to add attributes

    5. Rune crafting and combining/refining

    6. Armor combining. Take the look from one armor and the attributes from 3 other armors for a total of 6 attributes.

    It is definately not WoW.

I'm going to try this game now, but gotta say WOW wasn't the first thing or even that great... they had one thing GREAT ADVERTISEMENT... wc1 wc2 wc3 with all banners for WOW and im sure diablo had a banner too! Plus how many games do you see on T.V. with a comercial? Well any ways Wow isn't a awful game, but I would never say it was a GREAT game like everyone says. I hope this game is better.

Dont expect too much, World of Warcraft has rich content in pve and pvp in comparison to this very small ingame shop mmorpg. All item shop mmorpgs are quiete similar, the biggest and with the most content from many cash shop games i tried, was perfect world. Unfortunately most cash shop mmorpgs are just ripp off games, you pay per items and to achieve these virtual items a lot of things can be manipulated instead of a monthly fee. So just try things out, but dont expect that this game is any similar like wow.
