Ages ago when I played tabletop games I almost always played a thief but those games weren't all about combat. Playing a thief was a lot of fun. Unfortunately the thief role didn't translate well in the transition to mmorgps, usually being a light armor DPS class and little more.
In mmorpgs I mostly lean towards tank hybrids but also enjoy playing spellcasters if they have a good variety of things to do other than just DPS.
It depends on the game I'm playing. I typically will start out caster then maybe switch depending on the game play. In GW I started out a caster but now my favorite character to play is my Derv. In DDO I started out Wizard and that is still my favorite to play.
whats bad is, when ever i play now, my friends won't let me look at a healer class (they banned me from playing those)
I mean one time (or more lost count) a group person made me mad and i never healed him for the rest of the instance. haven't they heard "never make the healer angry" ?
I like starting out with a magic user of some sort. Not because of dps or any of that lame stuff, but because of the rp aspects. It's fantasy so I like magic users. Or if the mmo is a sci_fi like Neocron (and the upcoming Fallen Earth), I like building a long range sniper type with strong points put into crafting. I like to craft and gain lots of enjoyment finding resources to do so.
Pure mage all the way. In Skill based games i go all magic talents. Level/Classed based games always pick the mage/healer type. The most fun pvp is the kind when you can kill someone without ever being hit. Plus all the little bonsuses that are none combat are always fun.
However, for a strictly pvm/pve point of view, Ive always liked tanks as well. the exact opposite feeling i guess. being able to sit there and get hit a bunch wihtout it mattering. a nice break from always running and staying away with the magic classes. Never tank mage though. Has to be one extreme or the other.
I like ranged/melee combos, shoot some stab some, being usefull at any range, because I get tired of chasing people all the time in melee and I get tired of running all the time in ranged. I don't like magic though, I would prefer a bow or gun and a blade to magic.
Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit
For me, I actually play classes purely on how good their armor/clothing looks like, regardless of class. I tend to have a better time leveling/playing my character when he/she actually looks good while I do it. :P
I love utility classes, thus (in recent history) my favorite classes in LOTRO were Burg (first) and then Captain/ Lore Master depending on how I was feeling. I love having a part that is specific and then a wide array of abiities that are not that great.
Burgs were stealth/ massive first strike. That is what they did, then follow uped using a variety of crowd controls and debuffs (most AoE) to keep itself alive to finish off the groups or to aid the party.
Lore Masters were the CC's. That is what they did in groups and solo. They also had emergency healings and limited amount (but sometimes massive) DPS.
Captains were the buffers and IC rezzer. They had limited, but no means small heal, tanking and DPS abilities.
I love classes that are, this is what you brought me for, but this is how I can also help classes. A vast difference from my AC Melee Defense Spec, Mace Spec toon Brute from almost 10 years ago.
That is not to say I do not like specific classes, as I do. They are simple compared to the 'complex' classes and give a breather and different outlook on how the game is played. It especially helps you understand how the other classes approach problems and aid in how well your party works together.

I typically go for a close combat class. Sometimes play hybrids too since I'm really bad at deciding what I want to play.
The old SWG Combat Medic/Carbineer was my favorite combo. So I'd say I'm a debuffer/healer/support fire.
I prefer either a healer/support character or a primary nuker/ranged character. For some reason I despise melee
My Brute - Dare to challenge?

I love to melee, ussually I'm a damage dealer but I can be a good tank too.
Usually go for caster types, but I like to be able to do more then just Nuke. I miss my Valewalker

Hello my old friend.
I usually go for a caster class.
I prefer damage over time, and life drains. EQ Necro or WoW Warlock.
But I also like control classes, like EQ's Enchanter/Illusionist/Coercer or CoX's Controller/Dominator.
I also like Bards.

EQ Necromancer is my favorite style. I love standing back and slowly watching the health of mobs drain away. Not all games provide this tactic.
Stealth Assassin - Mainly because I like to play solo.

Healer evry time. I also loved the wards a Shaman could throw up in EQ2, wards don't seem to be so prevelant in new MMO's anymore though.
I support Belgiums efforts to get noticed ... at all.
