I find some of the comments odd seeing as this is the SWG veteran refuge........
I'm still pissed off because I've spent 4 years nearly looking for a new mmorpg to replace the SWG system and there isn't another mmorpg like it. Sure people say Ryzom or EVE amoung others but they ain't the same at all. To me EVE is all the way on one extreme but SWG was like a skill based sandbox version of Everquest. With seamless housing and player cities and It has an IP with great lore and art. I can't get into generic title this and normally I hate fantasy but I played WoW purely because I love the lore.
Conversely, one should forget and totally disregard the first time one saw their favorite movie (which, for many here may in fact be one of the SW movies). One should forget and totally disregard the first time one finished their favorite novel(s) (for me, the first time I finished The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings). One's first kiss. One's first experience with alcohol. Or drugs, if that's your bag. Or the first time a song moved you.
The thing is, while we change and the times change, those were the experiences that define who we are now.
If I could see Ep. IV again for the first time, I'd find the time. If I could stay up two days straight reading The Hobbit again, I wouldn't be adverse to that. If I could relive my first love again, no matter how it ended, I wouldn't hesitate to do so - I'd still let SWG come between us and thus end a 7 year relationship. And if I could go back and see my first DMB concert again, I would do it.
Yeah, I'm getting old now (can't believe I'm 30), but I still miss SWG - not just because it was my first MMORPG, but because it was a significant part of my life for a few years. And it's still the best MMORPG I've ever played. And most likely ever will...despite its flaws - and possibly because of them.
I don't think it's fair to tell anyone to get "over it," as it has obviously been a significant part of many peoples' lives. Personally, I'm glad there are still people like me who don't get too lost in the future at the sake of the past.
At the very least, SWG started the trend of emulating WoW, and, at the same time, self-destructing. Having played many, many MMORPGs since (with the exception of WoW, as I've never played it - proudly), this cycle just keeps playing out. It's like watching a close friend make the same wrong decision over and over again. It's sad. And while you realize there's nothing you can say or do to end the self-fulfilling prophecy, you still like to remember how much fun you had with that person before they went apeshit.
Oh, well. As Issac Brock (Modest Mouse) said, "I know now what I knew then, but I didn't know then what I know now."
SWG will never be a "footnote". At least for me.
I still hope that devs will soon realize that not everyone wants linearity. A lot of people would prefer to be able to go outside and wander around and do what they want to do rather than "Go take the trash out and come back in." (That's an analogy, of course.)
I had some fun moments in SWG. But those days are long gone. It's a nice memory and a box sitting on my PC games shelf to remind me of the fun I did have, and of the astounding amount of confounded potential.
SWG died for me the day they disregarded the original combat revamp threads.
