You can play freely to lvl 7 after that you have to upgrade your account to a premium account that cost around $15 per month if you want to progress past lvl 7.

The beta is only to test the Akklaim systems, your toons wont be deleted when the official release arrives.

Game is very skill based both on movement and timing but also in planning tactics and preparing how you fight. You hit and defend manually somewhat similar to oblivion but this is combined with the skill deck which moves around as you use your skills and its up to you to set it up so your abilities are effectively complementing each other.

There are no fatigue or magic points in the game, you have hit points and the 3 status bars that indicate movement speed (used to evade attacks too), damage and combat speed. Its essential you use abilities that debuff your enemy status bars and keep your own up. If you manage to disable an enemy by debuffing enough you can practically run around him with him being moving and attacking in slow motion while hitting you like a 5 year old.

So combinations of buffs/debuffs/damage setup in your skill deck that follow and complement each other makes you far more effective than just putting skills at random into your deck.

The game has done with the trinity. There are no dedicated tank and healer classes and there is no agro code from mobs what so ever, they attack and act depending on what happens and there is no way to hold agro. This has the effect that combat is very dynamic against large groups of mobs but it also have the effect that grouping is very easy and happens far more often than in most other new MMOs since people dont have to sit and spam "LF Healer" or "LF Tank".

Itemwise the game is somewhat similar to CoH/CoV. Items are initially only visual effects they do nothing gamewise except identifying your appearance and it _is_ possible to use your start gear at the endgame if you really like how it looks (but as you progress you get access to gear that looks somewhat cool'er). But gear does have slots for something called sigils.

Sigils works like enhancers in CoX, they enhance specific elements of your toon. Skill sigils are put on skills with enhancer slots and works exactly like CoX enhancers and only works on that skill. Item sigils are put into items and give you a more overall bonus to all your abilities. Example of items sigils are +melee damage, +ranged damage, +magic damage, +all damage, +resistance, +movement speed, +hits, +stats, +recovery rates and so on....

The effect is that you have a living crafting and economy system but people have the freedom to look exactly like they prefer their toon to look.

All in all its a very nice game with cool looks, a weird world, skill based combat and the best items system (IMO) seen so far.

I actually think that the Acclaim PVP server is the same as the EU English PVP server. They have the same name at least, and are listed as "international".

You'd be amazed, really at how good the community is on that particular server...and the AH has 3x more items than the Acclaim PVE server.

He he in common mmo terms "character" is everything about your char, the stats, skills, appearance and so on. When you say "toon" you refer to the virtual doll that represent your character in the virtual world.

To me, "toon" just always seemed to degrade the value of time and effort you put into your character. I never like it when people choose to refer to their characters like that, but I guess not many people put a personal investment into their avatars anymore.  It's rather difficult for me NOT to get into my characters head when playing an RPG, and therefore have some personal stake in how he or she looks, performs, and acts. I guess that's just a side effect of being a roleplayer and actor though.

    It really depends.

Back in "the day", games like Anarchy Online had "characters". They were complex, with a huge investment, and a lot of personal pride went into them.

Now days you play a toon in an MMO (for the most part). You might get to pick a skill, or a perk...but that's really it. There's no real customisation, or "building" of the character anymore.

If 'toon' implies less of an investment in that character than it may be a healthier way of looking at it. I have left behind literally thousands of well crafted characters in the 20 years I have been playing CRPG's. I may have spent more time on some than I have others, but I've always been comfortable with the fact that the character is temporary and that at any time I may never want to return to that game.

But I don't think that is what 'toon' really means. Its just dewd-speak like being 133t or pwning someone. Its nothing more than another bastardization of the English language. I think some people crave having their own lingo for things to make them feel like they are a part of something exclusive.

Toon has been used for over 10 years in MMOs.

I'm willing to bet a lot of people called their Pen & Paper DnD characters Toons as well.. and beyond that also.

    ToonTown.. hah.

Toon is hardly leet-speak, that's really pushing it my friend.
