There's a few bad copies of the patch going around, you want one with the ENU.PAK -- you should be able to look inside the zip file and see if it's included. If not, visit my guide stickied on the top of the Aion forums and download the pack I have included on there.

You'll want to unzip your file to your desktop, or wherever you downloaded it to. Open the folder that unzipping it creates, you should see all of the contents inside of the folder. It should be the ENU.PAK -- copy and paste the contents from that folder into the L10N folder inside of your Aion installation directory.

Once the ENU.PAK is placed in the L10N folder, start your game up. The patcher will still be in Chinese, but the login screen and on should be pure English.

Let me know if this got you ingame or not.

You install the game, without unpacking the data.zip.

After installation, go into your Aion folder, and dump the english patch into the L10N folder.

I don't believe they were referring to the data.ZIP -- but a ZIP file that the english patch came in. In which case dumping a .ZIP'd patch into the directory won't do anyone any good ;)

You can download a working copy of the patch at:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/218882500/ENU.pak

Once that file completes downloading, place it inside the L10N directory and you should be good. If it doesn't work, there's a few tweaks you can do to the files that could help. Some people have to do it, some don't. Also check the Regional settings in the Control Panel of your Operating System and make sure it's set to English (USA).

I would recommend searching through the games forums, if they are available in English.  I did some googling regarding the file you mention, and most sites seem to state that you have to make sure the file is in the folder, but don't state that there are any special tricks you have to perform to get it there.  That being the case, I would assume that you're ok to get it there by most any means, including unzipping if it's in a zip file.

AionSource.com forums are full of information on how to get playing the Chinese copy of the game. As is my guide stickied on the top of the Aion forums here.

Using the English patch is against the Aion TOS and I seriously doubt they will provide a lot of help on trying to get you into the Chinese retail since they're already complaining about us modding game files and breaking the EULA/TOS.

The server names overlap form the various regions. There's 4+ regions, and they all have some of the same server names. So if I told you Azariel, make sure you're on the right region. If you choose Azariel on region 3, that's a different Azariel than region 2.

The highest population of english players so far (from what I hear and have seen) is Azariel on the North Region. The North Region is the second one on the list in the selection and translates to Clock Tower. If you visit my guide, I have pictures showing the correct region and how to choose it.

But yeah, Azariel is pretty high for English population. Few other servers, but scattered on various regions.
