Looking for something different?

So alot of MMORPGs lately are just grindtabulous messes that have little to no atmosphere and feel like a chore to play.

There's only one MMO I've played lately that is different from the rest (With of course, a few exceptions, eg. Guild Wars, EVE and the like). That MMO is Monster Hunter Frontier.

I suggest you stop reading now if you

1. Hate anything Monster Hunter

2. Don't want to use a guide to register for a Korean game.

If you haven't played any of the Monster hunter games (PS2, PSP), it will be reasonably hard to know which items are which, due to it being in Korean, but if you have a good memory, you'll figure it out soon enough.

Firstly, some gameplay videos,

www.youtube.com/watch <---- A group of hunters taking down one of the town attacking monsters, Yamatsukami (It goes down rather fast considering they all know what to do and have decent equips with adrenaline which gives you much higher damage when on low HP)

www.youtube.com/watch <----- Group of hunters taking down a Silver Rathalos, a rather medium difficulty monster, which can be tricky with a higher AI at higher ranks, although flashbombing and hammer K.O.ing it can make it a rather easy fight.

www.youtube.com/watch <---- Video displaying some of the armor.

Couldn't find an MHF video of soloing but it is possible, and more challenging.

One strange thing I've run into is depending on the season of the server you're in, a certain enemy may appear there aswell as the one you're hunting, as I was hunting for a velociprey in the jungle, ran into a Rathian, and with some lucky dodge rolling only just escaped with low health >_<

For those of you who don't know, new equipment is made from the materials you carve off of an enemy once you kill it, this can take a few kills depending on how rare the items are and if the enemy flees rather than dieing. Oh and also ores and insects from mining and bugnetting respectively.

Weapons consist of

Greatswords- Have some of the highest damage, highest elemental/status attack values, can be used to block at the expense of sharpness.

Longswords- Also have rather high damage, can be a bit faster, are usually sharper with a bar that fills up on attack that adds sharpness and can be used for a high damage special attack.

Lances- Shield and a lance (Think spears, not thrown) that's basically block and jab, with a charging attack.

Gunlances- Like lance, but don't block quite as well, have a few different attacks, such as shooting (usually only a distance of a normal attack) and a bigass cannon shot that does massive damage but can only be used every 5 mins or so.

Sword and shield- Decent damage, blocking, fast, able to use items with weapon out.

Dual swords- Typical dual wield weapon, fast, high damage, with a Demonizer mode that has a high damage combo.

Hammers- Slow, have high attack, 2 special attacks (swinging it around 360 like a god damn spinning top, and the super pound) with a high damage 3 hit combo. If the enemy is hit in the head, there is a chance to stun them, knocking them down.

Hunting Horns- Like hammers in a few ways, not very good solo unless used in the right hands, can play notes to heal/buff your party

Light and Heavy Bowguns- Light bowgun=Crossbow type, Heavy bowgun= Cannon type, Heavy has more damage, but you move like a freaking tank when carrying one of the damn things. Different element and status effect bullets, including pellet (think shotgun ammo) pierce, and cluster (Hits enemy then explodes around them). Aim with mouse or keyboard.

and last, in some cases least, the Bow- Another ranged weapon, doesn't aim with a crosshair type, more like what you'd expect with a real life bow, attacks can be held and charged to second and third with most, at the expense of stamina. Arrow types are Scatter (Think shotgun again), Normal, and Pierce (can hit the enemy multiple times depending on which part you hit). Oh and you can also coat your arrows with status effects and elemental attacks.

Controls can be changed, I personally use the default, WASD running, mouse left click, right click, wheel click, and wheel roll for the different attacks, spacebar to dodgeroll, shift to sprint, Q to block, and a few others but this post is long enough as it is T_T

Missions/quests are gotten in the city, which acts as a lobby with a blacksmith, item sellers, and your own house that can be decorated, complete with what else but a chef cat that can boost your stats for your next mission.

What can I say, you'll either love it or hate it.

Link to the registration guide for the korean website is here: www.onrpg.com/boards/122774.html

PM me for a website to get a "Magic Number" if you can't get one yourself, I check this website often enough.

At the moment it's free, may change at May 31, that's a decent month to decide whether you'll pay or not in my opinion...

So good luck if you decide to give it a shot, pm me, Mushroom in game if you wanna group up ^^

It's complicated to get it going, a guy on the third page of that thread posted a download link that has a fairly decent speed, I recommend using FlashGet or another download manager for it, since it may cut out at one point, but you can resume it with that.

I'm expecting alot of "Man screw doing all that" posts, but hey, hopefully I helped SOMEBODY ^^

EDIT: Oh and no silly little item mall or anything.
