Ex Mythos (Diablo & Hellgate) developers announce new game!

LobotomistLobotomist Member EpicPosts: 5,981

If you remember last year fall of Flagship studios (Hellgate London) also destroyed another game that was curently in closed beta : Mythos

Everyone who played Mythos would agree that it was much better than HGL and in fact even in beta was simply awesome game. Although it started as mere network test for HGL.

Well people working on Mythos went to form company : Runic Games , and were working on new project ( obviously related to Mythos)

Today they announced the game !

Well if nothing else...ya gotta give the devs credit for their determination. Failure after failure and yet they keep trying.

I'm not touching anything from Roper or Crew ever again no matter how awesome it sounds or is. They { MOD EDIT } don't deserve to be in the industry at all.

Roper is working on Champions online now...

Gah, this is pathetic.....why do people that constantly fail keep getting funds only to fail again!  Making an Diablo-esque action game with the onset of Diablo III looming over everyones heads is so dumb....

  • LobotomistLobotomist Member EpicPosts: 5,981

It has nothing to do with Bill Roper.  (unfortunately Champions online does)

Mythos was done by a second studio and it was completely separate game.

Game with very limited founds , that was actually only developed to test network capability of HGL.

    But unbelivable happened.

Mythos was immensly more popular than HGL. And better game in every way.

So better that Flagship actually planned to scrap HGL and continue only with Mythos.

Unfortunately Mythos was offered as collateral for HGL ( shows you how much Roper cared about the game)

And when they bancrupted Mythos was taken and forcefully discontinued aswell.

So again. Mythos and new game has nothing to do with Bill Roper.

And whoever played Mythos, knows that there is something good to expect

What he said, they aren't the same people who worked on HGL and yes in the end Mythos turned out to be more popular. I was  in Mythos beta and it was a blast to play. Hopefully Torchlight can rekindle those Mythos moments and have better ones too!

I got into the Mythos tests and honestly, the visuals and gameplay reminded me a lot of Diablo I, while the lore was such a hideous WoW rip-off I was amazed not to find cities called StormForge and Ironwind. As a proof of networking concept, sure, great. As a new-gen game? Well. Very good luck to them.

Having said that, I do cheerfully agree that it was a hundred times better than Hellgate, which was the most crushingly gutting Beta I ever got into. Brain-dead WoW effort on rails. Tempting.

I got into the beta test for mythos and I have to agree that it was a great game for what it was. If they do use Mythos as the basis of this new game I do hope they improve on it as it did have some glaring shortcommings however. Overall it was a very good hack and slash type game... It was just lacking in depth.

I wish them luck and hope they have gotten over the problems that plagued Flagship Studios.

I'm all for new games, but I'm really not digging the character model I saw in the screenshots at the posted link.  Maybe these guys should be collaborating with the developers of Lego Universe to get it out sooner!

I signed up for the Beta and I thought Mythos was mediocre at best, and deleted it within a few hours of play.  It was just a lukewarm rehash of Diablo (good game, but that was then, and this is now) because they had no other option but to fall back on the only thing anyone remembered them for and which ever made them tons of money.  If you thought Mythos was awesome - and I mean this with no disrespect - you must be easily pleased.  I've seen more depth in a saucer of water.

Mind you, I thought Hellgate: London was even worse, being a bodged-together, simplistic, extremely repetitive FPS.  No wonder it gave the gaming world the term "You've been Flagshipped".  I wouldn't even download a demo of anything that useless crew of code-slingers makes, if my life depended on it.

That's the one to which I was referring.  Doesn't that look like a bit like a lego toon on steroids?  I'm not sure if a more cartoony version of Diablo would be my cup of tea, but I'd be interested to hear exactly what their plans are for this game.

I found HGL's gameplay fun, and boss runs on Moloch and doing Wilds very addictive, but I generally agree, HGL might have succeeded if it didn't release in such an un-finished state.

Well you can hop on www.runicgamesfansite.com and check out all the info there. We know this so far...

    1. The game will release this year (already 5-6months in developement)

    2. The game will be downloadable (pricing has yet to be set but we already heard maybe $20-$30)

    3. Single player will release first then the mmo version will be worked on.

    4. The game will have a pet feature sort of like Fate.

    5. The game will be modable too.

Kudos to Vik, sounds too good to be true, yeah I've been hoping Runic can deliver the addictive gameplay quality and loot system that HGL had, but the game looks isometic, as in point-n-click "auto-target" which I don't like.  Do you know if there's FPS style controls like HGL, or will it play more like D2 ?

Thanks for the info so far m8.

I question the decision to release a game like this in the likelyhood that Diablo 3 will be along next year, but the fact that its moddable interests me. If it has a high degree of moddability-new items, new maps, new enemies, new skills- then it might turn out to be very interesting.

This is great news, thanks for sharing :)

I was in the Mythos beta, and the team was amazing. I was happy when I heard the created a new studio. They have been much faster than I thought they would be.

Oh, and I see they heard our many pleas about getting a pet like in Fate. If it is also mod-able and perhaps even to be played on a LAN, I think they have a hit.

I am looking forward to Torchlight :D

Can't say I like the art style they've chosen. Will see how the game progresses before I make any drastic judgements.

    Keeping an eye on it.

Keep in mind that the developers of Mythos had little to do with Hellgate London.  While they were under the same company they were split into two different teams with little collaboration between them.
