I dunno whats hapening to this ppl but this pro brave gamers makes me laugh. You just sounded like a carebear.. all that hate towards wow and casuals just tells me you're one of those with the agressive and superiority attitude and will most likely beeing shouting in RL when his pro hardcore gamer char will be full looted by some casual with more skill. Im playing mmos since..ever.. tryed all kind of games, also played wow for a long time and i can only laugh at this offensive attitude. Even if wow got 3 bilions 5 years old kids playing... did you ever played arenas in wow at 2400 ratings? Where everyone got same gear and where skill matters? lol ..guess you didnt
Can ppl stop saying the word "WOW" just to try pass the idea they are mature ppl with real skills? Its kind old already and completly ridiculous. My imediate image of this ppl... is that they have exactly 5 or less years old. With mindless hate and pro atitude, generalizing 11 bilion ppl that plays same game. Grow up dude.
I feel like calling my MO char wowfanboy.. beeing completly casual and beeing able to kill and loot all your progamer gear. That would be awsome
..cant wait
You should probably quote people or name someone if you are responding to them.
Not everyone in arenas had the same gear. Not sure what you're trying to say by mentioning an arena rating. MO isn't going to be about arenas.. People use WoW as an example because most people have either played it or at least heard of it. I thought that part was obvious..
Also, I'd like to inform you that WOW isn't a word. It's an acronym for World Of Warcraft. It's a video game with a three word title. Thought that was obvious too. I know, I'm just knitpicking. Isn't it fun? =P
And finally, you can name your character Wowfanboy if you'd like, however, you will be reported quickly and your name will be changed. You know, for someone who complains about peoples attitudes, you seem to be able to send out the insults and hate with the best of them.
A lot of what people are saying will make this game hard reminds me of eq, we had no map back then, it made pvp fun. You had to know the zone you couldn't just see a friendly town arrow on the mini map and bolt for it. It also made the game a pain, I remember having to run back for people on raids all the time cause they got lost, talking to them to find a land mark then going to get them. I hope mortal does well, mmo's need a renisance to the old days to weed out some of the wow kids. I find myself constantly crusing on LoTRo as I play with people that can't get anywhere without a map, and wouldn't have lasted ten minutes in an Nogifin raid much less a real raid on EQ.
This post is worthless posturing. Please stop being ignorant, unless you want the community of this game to turn out like darkfalls.
Yeah, thats the idea. Darkfall's community was generally pretty clean of carebears.
DF community if full of carebears friend, every turn you get fully armoured geeks ganking newbies! is this a challenge or just an easy slice of pie. Simpe it's easy. yes agreed there are many hardcore players, but you dont often see them ganking newbies for no reason. I love DF dont get me wrong, but it's full of geeky carebear newbie gankers, players that can't face the real challenge so tool up and go for easy kills.

I don't mean to offend you with the following statement.. and not all of this applies to you.
I'm getting exceedingly more agitated every day with people who make up their own definition of 'hardcore' , 'casual', 'carebear', 'troll', 'fanboy', etc. It seems that a vast majority of gamers don't even know their own lingo. Then you attempt to educate them on the matter and they insult you and act as if they are better than you or know more. It's really frustrating at times.
I've stated this before, smart players will bait the weak into traps and profit from their inexperience. Chivalry is dead in most cases. If I planned to kill a player for their belongings, and had two choices in front of me.. I warrior in full plate, with a nice magic sword.. taking things down in a few hits, or a moderately armored player with a GM crafted weapon.. taking far longer to kill their opponent.. the obvious choice is the weaker. You have far less chance of losing and a much higher chance of winning. It's a matter of risk vs. reward. You'll only take on that fully geared player if they are half dead or from behind. You are dumb if you do otherwise in a game like this.
All of that said, 'carebear' does not mean you don't have chivalry. It does'nt mean that you go around and gank newbies. In fact, it's quite the opposite. 'Carebear' is actually given to people who try to avoid fights at all costs. Obviously there can be various levels of the term, but the term itself is not at all associated with killing players. You can call those players what you'd like to in other games that do not offer full loot as a reward, but in a game with full loot, they are the smart ones. Stronger players will prey on the weak It's how things work. I've played 5+ years of Ultima Online, I know exactly what to expect and how things will play out.
In ending. With the experience that I've had with games just like this. This game IS meant for the casual player. This game allows you to reach success in a variety of different ways that other games do not allow. You can go anywhere and do anything you'd like, whenever you feel the urge to do it. You don't need to play from 3pm to 10pm to get into the large raids, because end-game does not involve large raids. You can play in the middle of the night and have a chance to be as strong as anyone else. You can even spend time decorating your house for christs sake. You can sit out on a boat and fish, completely oblivious to the world around you. There is just so much to do, most gamers have never experienced this and think they know what to expect.. I'm sorry, but they don't. Hell, even a player that plays for 10 hours a day can be caught by a player that plays for 3 hours a day eventually. There is a cap. There aren't any epic raid weapons that kill people in one hit like there are in other games. And, even if there is, you are risking losing that item by going afk for 20 seconds outside of town. It's FPV for EVERYONE. Get over it, had to sneak it in.
Okay.. I've been pretty nice this time around, I get far too many warnings from MMORPG.com.. lol
Though I don't disagree with the OP.. in that most casual gamers, i.e. WoWPlayers, will not like this game because it wont be easy. I am thinking of this game as the Fantasy Eve Online.. extreme depth, full loot pvp, and big wars. I love that they don't give you a minimap and they make you explore and remember where things are. I can't wait to try it.
Wtf . I'm a casual (because of work and wife not by choice) and that really insulted me. Just because I dont have all day anymore to game doesnt mean I want my damn hand held in-game. A big FU to you buddy. Oh and I played Eve for 4 years. I'd slap you if I could lol.
Ok folks, my thought is it had better be different than the , gank loving, big nuts, take no prisoners boys want or it will fail. Im no WOW fanboi but there is a reason its successful in that it appeals to a broad range of people. Also im not one to think a game needs 10,000,000 subs to be successful but you can bet your pvp reward sword that the devs would like to see that many. We all want something different but we also all want something different than the next guy and not everyone is going to get what they want. Game companies are going to publish what sells. . And face it, hardcore PVP, gank that little dude, loose your armor death penalty stuff just doesnt fly.

No WoW clones succeeds either so whats your point?

There are several games with respectable sub numbers that i have heard referred to as WOW clones. You know what they are as well as i do and we can both name several. As for my point? Just what i said, what the ingame bad ass boys want they arnt going to get and if they do it will not survive. This may come as a shock to you but game makers are in it for the money, not to make a select few happy. They will make the game that will attract the most subs. Did you understand my point this time?

End Rant.
Good points friend and i agree with most of what you said. I think my carebear term was more of a frustrated hit back
One thing i will say though is that i am in no way a carebear, i hate handhoklding, quest lines etc but i will avoid a fight unless i have a reason to fight. I dont gank unless its a racial enemy or i have been attacked first. I will never exploit a weakness in an allie ( which is what most do in the newbie area's ) as i respect the lore of the game. Dont get me wrong if people want to become known for it then it's different, but for a quick cheap shot, that would make me feel inferior and pitiful
If that makes me a carebear then i guess ai am just that! But then that's why i came to DF cause it caters for players like me
Please dont misunderstand me friend, i love the game
Hours you play per week has nothing to do with Casual gamer. It's more about the world/npc holding your hand in your journey,For exemple World Of warcraft..You follow a path in a linear way , whom you can't get lost and all it's require , it's your world Map and your quest arrow to follow. You can be *alone* until the last level and yet you can remain competitive. In a *Hardcore sandbox* game like Ultima Online was in 1998.You're thrown in the world and you don't have a npc with a ! giving you your first quest. You need to explore and find by yourself and not everything is thrown to you. There's also no level above some monster head. It's you who decide if you can take it or not.If you see a big ass Ogre roaming the forest close to you area and you just started. You won't have a level above the ogre head showing if you can take it or not. You won't either know crap about ennemy .You won't know if it's a sorcerer or a wizard.Player will come up with something each time you fight them. Thus each encounter will be different. It's a sandbox game. That mean right at the beginning the whole world is open to you. It's you who decide what will be your journey and not the NPC deciding for you. Uo had such a powerful community because of this.Just like daoc at the beginning which was quite hardcore.Daoc had quest but they wre long and hard and you had basicly no idea where to go.The NPC was only giving you some hint.
In a *real life* WoW.You would be thrown into some unknown place and you have a big ass arrow that you can follow to get out of here.Well in a sandbox game ... You have to find your own way.
"Casual gamer is a loosely defined term used to describe a type of video game player whose time or interest in playing games is limited"
That is the definiton from wikipaedia whoch confirms my own thoughts on the matter. To me "casual" always refered to the time someone had to put into a particular game whilst "hardcore" refered to to those wo played many hours. WOW to me has always had lots of hardcore players as the end game requires a large time commitment (One of the reasons a lot of people eventually leave)
WOW is however a "theme park" game as is lotro and many others. It is this term (and its opposite sandbox) which refers to the amount of hand holding going on.
I am glad some people in this thread have some sense, the OP rant(even the title)makes no sense,As some posters have pointed out a casual player isnt someone that needs his hand held and lead everywhere,it is simply a player who has limited time to play.
From what I have read about MO I dont see why "this game is NOT for the casual player"fits in,sure if you play 10 hours a day you will be able to craft/build/whatever more than a guy that maybe plays 1-2 hours a day but I still dont see why a casual player cant have alot of fun in MO.
Like a couple of posters have said it seems a couple of disgrunted X DF players have came over to the MO boards and started there elitist "we are so much better than you" posts......I sure hope this doesnt continue.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
So I saw a thread similar to this one and decided to make the post the OP should have made: A warning for casual, carebear gamers to leave right now, rather than a whiny complaint that a new MMO will require more than a few mouse and keyboard clicks. This game will not hold your hand. It won't give you a map even, requiring you to make your own. I can't wait to make them and either sell them or give them to friends. You won't be able to /tell anyone right away, nor send out global chat. Love that too. If I don't know you, I don't want to talk to you or hear the latest Chuck Norris joke or how great it feels when you receive fellatio from your sister's hot friend. And if I CAN see that type of thing in my chat box, I'll be close enough to throw my sword into your gut. And believe me, I'll do it without hesitation. There will be Open PVP with few restrictions, though your actions will have consequences. Yes, you can be killed potentially anytime, anywhere. Combine this with chat restrictions and I'd wager few if any bots, gold farmers, kiddie jokes, or the other crap that makes most mainstream MMOs unbearable enters the game. I can't wait to full item loot some WoW kid who thought he could make the transition and be uber l33t right away. Building/attacking cities, homes, mounted combat, siege weapons, and a seamless game world shouldn't be a playground for the carebears anyway. Frankly, carebears don't deserve features like this, particularly after the last six years in MMO gaming has done nothing but appeal to the lowest common denominator. Here's the thing. Mortal Online is slated to be a true MMORPG. In short a Massively MULTIPLAYER Online ROLEPLAYING Game I emphasize "multiplayer" and "roleplaying" to stress that this genre has been twisted and contorted by the MSOGs (Massively Singleplayer Online Games) such as WoW and many others. Whatever multiplayer features they offer absolutely pales in comparison to what this genre originally demanded of people. In short, the carebears have thier MMOs. They can go play them right now. Mortal Online is for those of us who take our gaming seriously and who want a real challenge in our games, rather than a virtual morphine injection every time we slay a boar near Brill. Don't come here complaining that the game is too hard, or that it doesn't cater to the "casual" players. It was never designed or supposed to do that. If you do, we will laugh at your stupidty and make fun of your weak gaming abilities. And yes, I'm an arrogant bastard when it comes to MMOs whose tolerance for the cookie-cutter WoW-esque crap has run dry.

People seem to always want to make a connections between this game and darkfall. really they are too different games. For some reason people think this game is all about siege warfare and hardcore pvp. But if you look harder at this game and a lot of the realism elements of this game i think it is really trying to be a more casual roma victor.
Just a guess, but the attitude displayed by the OP in this ridiculous, self-aggrandizing thread are EXACTLY the same as seen in that cesspool known as the Darkfall community.
These types of games seem to cater to the lowest forms of human life, and the OP serves to confirm this. I'd like to know exactly how this game will become something other than DF. What will make MO a better, more rewarding place to play than the cyber-trash filled world of Agon?
The communitiy keeps destroying these games. I was thinking of trying Darkfall but then spent a little too much time on the Darkfall boards and now have 0 interest.
I like the devs of MO - them at least seem to be up front and honest. I plan to give his one a shot (if my poor old machine doesn't go into melt down) just because these are the kind of indie devs that need to be supported. Though the full loot open PvP does turn me off a little - I know what kind of player it attracts. (the same ones who faked low skill in Quake live so they got put in newbie matches where they would dominate destroying the fun for the true newbies)

I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think I'm the only casual player excited by the fact that the Mortal devs have consistently indicated they're more interested in building a world than building a game. If even half of the stuff in that newly-released Powerpoint makes it into the game, it will be a crafter's paradise, to say nothing of the roleplaying opportunities inherent in a system clearly intended to facilitate it.
Sure, it'll attract the red=dead morons, but I'm willing to put up with that for a chance to have a true impact on the game world in terms of economics. Also, though these pvp folks are the most vocal, I suspect as the game gains more notoriety and moves closer to release, it will start to attract gamers who want something a little deeper than a zerg.

The community is a LOT better on the official MO forums than the DF community. They are somewhat self mediating. Mods also quickly swoop in to get rid of troublemakers. My experience in forumfall was that it was like being in 4chan. Just total teen angst, chaos and everyone trying their best to impress peers. Hopefully when the DF community gets bored and comes over the current community can break their spirits a bit , maybe get a few of them to act like adults.
Anyway, murderer's in Mortal Online will have a stat loss penalty they incur when killed. This should stop the world from being an 'ENTIRE' gankfest

I agree - so far, the community on the official MO forums have been far, far better than on the DF forums, which I'm sure has a lot to do with policing. Unfortunately, the horrible behavior of DF players in-game pretty much matched the idiotic behavior on their forums. The systems within that game seem to cater to such foolishness.
Real consequences in-game will mitigate that type of stupidity, and hopefully MO will implement such things. The internet tough guys should be able to handle harsh consequences, right?
So the game MO is being played like DF again. Build egos over pixels, imaginary pixles of a game not even complete in design. Playing the game of smack talking, looking smart on a message board, badmouthing people.
Now if this trend continues, MO can go out of the door for me. Players like the OP makes no gamers.
They don't care about lore, they will smack even their allies for no reason. So a dwarf ambush a dwarf during a time when the goblins were laying siege to a dwarven stronghold. You want such a clown in a roleplaying game?
They don't contribute. To contribute each and everyone has to cooperate and feel team. Smack talking guys need to be the big one, he need to look down on others, he won't make a good teammate or comrade. I would rather solo packman than join a guild with such big mouthers.
They won't make good neighbors, he won't be nice to newcomers, as he needs to be superior. He cannot be an equal friend, he needs to be better than equal. Or he quits.
They won't make good losers. They smack talk, and when they lose, they will need to find tons of excuse to explain. I will have to sit down and listen to hours of his moans after beating him once. Do I need that?
Look at DF, think again. Is this the kind of game community we want? If we want a successful PVP, we need a successful game community, as the NPCs ingame won't provide enough gameplay. PVPing with people means playing with people you want to be associated with. The OP? Not in a million years.
Mortal Online will be a sandbox game where you can do what you want, when you want, to whoever you want. Period. There's no levels. No guys standing in obscure points asking you to kill 30 boars and return to him.
The dev's know that their game design appeals to a very select group of gamers, they explicitly state it time and time again. This game won't be for everyone.
If you like the features of this game, awesome, come join the community on the forums.

This isn't about hardcore or carebear or whatever internet jargon you want to come up with. It's about preference.
Oh, one guy made a thread with an elitist attitude so let's give up on the entire game and community?
Nah, not here ...
Take it easy guys, and just don't get offended by some people's urge to try and paint the world in black and white for all of us.
There is much more to MO than just the "hardcore pvp" which will have more pennalties for random p.k.ers than in DF as it looks now. MO is also trying to be a crafters dream come true, and besides that there is the huge immersion side to it which has been thought over and influences many game features; from player housing to the cross breeding system, and from mount taming to unique monster encounters (which can actually be controlled by GM's when they see fit). To sum it up; a great haven for role players, crafters and pvp'ers as it looks now.
It is easy to dismiss MO as "just another full loot pvp game" for a very small niche and only use DF as a reference, but that doesn't do the complete concept much credit.
I for one have been more than impressed with many of the anounced features. Take the ability to pick the races of your parents and grandparents, for instance. It decides your background and influences your looks and stats at character creation. In one word; GREAT! ... that idea sounds so obvious and logical yet I have never come across it before in big releases.
Bottom line; don't take anyone's opinion for granted and read up on the available info for yourself.

"This game won't be for everyone."
I know the above phrase is often uttered by fans who are self-selecting themselves as elite gamers, free thinkers, and "gamers with discerning tastes", all stemming from the games they choose to play.
To me, "this game won't be for everyone" has become a huge red flag, signifying that these players actually recognize that it will cater to the worst of the worst - the most immature, the most sociopathic, and the most "WTFPWNZORZ" types found in gaming today.
The attitude above denotes someone most people wouldn't want to share a bus ride with, let alone share a gaming experience with.
Honestly, I am hoping for far more from Mortal Online, because it seems to offer more (as long as the developers can deliver what they claim they will). At least I hope it will be a departure from the DF mentality, and resulting failure.
More and more, the phrase "this game won't be for everyone" seems to signify not something that is for the elite or the hardcore, but something for the aberrant - in the same way a necrophiliac might say that necrophiliac porn "isn't for everyone".
No mmo is for everyone, no matter what Activision's marketing team tries to tell you. That said, MO will offer (over time it seems) specific features that many different types of players can enjoy. Will there be the option of going out and killing 10 boars? Absolutely! But no one will be asking for that specifically (ok, maybe a crafter might). The only magic line will be the notes scribbled on your maps, or in the notebook at your desk. That way, if you need that kind of assistance, it is there and at the same time- not, to appeal to various types. Full Looting? Sure, isn't that what we all do to npc mobs anyway?
Point is, there is no such thing as MO catering to a specific set of gamers. It is all what you, yourself, make of it. Therein lies the fun.

Good luck in Nave.
Making things short: "When I have a complete gear, my skills start to matter"
I laugh so hard ^___^
What 99% of mmorpg playerbase ?Btw, 1 comment from hype meter:
99% of mmorpg playerbase never heard about MO, and never will xD

And here we go again with these ridiculous topics.
Darfall DeJaVu anyone?
*sigh*

Okay.. I've been pretty nice this time around, I get far too many warnings from MMORPG.com.. lol
End Rant.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

That's my hope anyway, we'll see.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
{ Mod Edit }
Boohoo FFA PVP!

COME TO THE FORUMS AND HANG OUT IN IRC.
Why dont you say whats really on your mind?
My brand new bloggity blog.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
