Darklands, the classic single-player RPG from Microrose, set in a semi-realistic mediveal Europe, there's some witches and other folk-lore related enemies but mostly it's a down to earth and realistic world where alchemy just happen to work. Would be cool. Needs to be done.
Mass Effect would be a great MMO imo. But BioWare has there hands full with SWtor.
I totally agree, when playing through it i imagined myself being in a MMO lol. Already has main city and very interactive quests, plus the combat has a little something for everybody. Would have been amazing.....
That list is...ok. No Elder Scrolls or Fallout? APB is the GTA Online pretty much. Kingdom Hearts? Nah, Just play ToonTown and Final Fantasy XI (hope that is the right numeral). I was going to say Shenmue, but I think there is a Shenmue Online already. I honeslty think a Mega Man X Online would make sense. I think sometimes when you think of games that should be an MMO, thinking outside the box would be nice. Not to what is close to being one, but something that has the properities to introduce thousands of new life and breed into it.
I havent read all the replies.. but after having read the article, first things that comes to mind is - how can ANYONE make such a list and not include Fallout as an MMO?

Oh wow, I forgot about that game, it was great!
It would definately make for a good MMO setting, thanks for bringing back a fond memory!
Bioshock WTF!? should be System shock mmo bioshock doesnt even deserve to be on that list! there are far more better games! SHOGO:M.A.D for instance would make a brilliant MMO too :P sorry but this should be renamed (TOP 10 MODERN GAMES THAT SHOULD BE MMOS).

I'm gonna say it.... Vampire Bloodlines the Masquerade Online and Fallout 3 could have been a MMO and it should have certainly been coop as it stands... I think the whole D+D theme should leave for a while. Elves, orcs, goblins etc.... getting old even though what is out there is fun... Vampires and Shooters!! Bring it on !!

I agree Vampires the Masquerade would be great, even more if they could get more then just vampires in.
Also why does everyone like starcraft so much? If you ask me it wasn't any better or did anything new that Warcraft did, so please no to that as an online game xD
It includes... Vampire: The Masquerade (the best known and most popular)
Werewolf: The Apocalypse
Mage: The Ascension
Wraith: The Oblivion
Changeling: The Dreaming
Hunter: The Reckoning
Mummy: The Resurrection
Demon: The Fallen (And others)
CCP (the creators of Eve Online) has the rights to this setting. And I'm 100% positive they plan on making a MMO out of it. And considering how popular vampires are (and horror themes in general) they should do quit well with it.
Plan on making an MMO out of it? My friend, they have already started. World of Darkness Online is in production. It was announced that after the latest expansion hit in March (09) they were pulling more resources over to WoDO.
I'll be surprised if the WoD MMO is going to be based off the (Old) World of Darkness line, considering that White Wolf killed it off four years ago and rebooted the franchise. The (New) World of Darkness consists of:
Vampire: The Requiem
Werewolf: The Forsaken
Mage: The Awakening
Promethean: The Created
Changeling: The Lost
Hunter: The Vigil
Geist: The Sin-Eaters
You won't be surprised, then. It's being made using the "new" World of Darkness setting. CCP/white Wolf has stated as much and the 1 or 2 fan sites up for it orient themselves using references to the new stuff. Personally, I could go with either version. I loved Masquerade and after reading the new WoD core book and the Requiem book cover to cover I have no real issues with the new version. I hate that my beloved Gangrel had their history changed, but, meh, not enough for me to lose an ounce of interest.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
I would love to see a Record of Lodoss War mmo or atleast one that uses some anime style graphics
yeah I agree with this guy, Record of Lodoss War MMO would be a very cool setting, a lot of lore behind it and it wouldnt be completely restricted to just the Lodoss island, as there are many other places in that world to go other than lodoss.
The idea of a Left 4 Dead mmo does sound great. Running arround the city finding new survivors to team up with, or battle for safehouses, supply points (ammo, health,..)
I would love to see a Record of Lodoss War mmo or at least one that uses some anime style graphics
Dunno, Lodoss war is ok but the world isn't amazing. I rather had a "The slayers" MMO .
But, yes, Anime style works well for an MMO as long as they dont use it as an excuse for bad graphics as so many F2P games do. High polygon count and good shadows/lightning is a must.
And as long as they stay away from cheesy stuff like DBZ and Pokemon. Robotech/Macross would make a nice MMO or Trigun also. Hellsing for that matter as a horror MMO (The scene where the nazi vampires invade London in zeppelins would be... intresting...).
Pokemon should be on that list, along with harry potter. I dont even like harry potter and i know that wouldbe more successful as an mmo then bioshock.
With this list, Jon was going for gaming franchises. Those, while they have loads of video games, I am sure you would agree are not "primarily" about video games.
I suspect a future list will include a list of non-gaming centric IP that should be MMOed.
You don't know much about Pokemon do you?
Pokemon is originally a video game franchises, saying it can't be a video game that gets turned into a MMORPG is like saying you can't turn in Starcraft because it has books, etc based on it.
Anyway, some more options;
* Harvest moon/Rune Factory MMORPG (this is easy to understand)
* Half-Life (huge universe, could work extremely well when going into the smaller details)
* Quake/Doom?
* Dragon Quest
* CHRONO TRIGGER!!!111 (wow how many new and interesting ideas could you come up with the Chrono series?)
EDIT: Trauma Centre online! LOL choose which doctor class you want to be, you can even be a Nurse!
Awful list. Why pick the most popular console games to turn into MMOs just because they sell well? A Neverwinter Nights MMO? Why thell do that when you can make an Forgotten Realms MMO? You know, the world it's based in?
Crimson Skies. (The definitive alternative to space-sims)
Battletech. (MechWarrior)
World of Darkness. (Vampire: The Masquerade)
Starcraft
Diablo
Fallout (Since it's obvious the one in development isn't coming)
The Elder Scrolls
Pokemon (And certainly not the entire Nintendo IP lineup crammed into one game like that anti-drug cartoon from the 90's)
I definitely agree with the Neverwinter Nights Online idea.
The Persistent Worlds (PWs) some of the people created (and still run to this day in some cases) for that game were nothing short of impressive. Complete, functional trade-based economies, fully realized/scripted gladiator arenas, deep and evolving plots, and on and on... They were basically really great MMOs shrunken down to a much smaller scale.
I always thought that if some of the better PW designers/coders for NwN were to get together and work on a MMO, they could do some amazing stuff.
As for BioShock online? Hmmm... I dunno, the environment's large... but kinda confined for a game that would support and keep tens, or potentially hundreds of thousands of people entertained for the long term.

Who the hell is Jon Woods and what retard thought it would be a good idea to post his fucking retarded opinions on the mainpage of this site? Half of his selections don't even make sense for the genre.
Well, I'm the Managing Editor of this website, and I've been working here for nearly five years. What are your credentials? Also, I spell my name Wood, not Woods. Like what you throw in the fire, not what you walk through on a summer day.
As has been said previously in this thread, he idea of these lists is to encourage discussion. There is absolutely no way to create a list like this that is going to make everyone happy. Your opinions are going to be different from mine. Just for those of you who might be wondering, here's the approach I took to create my list: First, I discounted any game that was currently being made. This removes World of Darkness, Fallout and others. Second, I wanted to take a look at games from a number of different genres. I threw in Sports, FPS, Survival, Children's, Historical, War, RTS, Open World and more. Personally, I think what an MMO is is evolving beyond just RPGs. What's happening is games from other genres are making their way in and incorporating time tested RPG elements into their games, creating a new and more expansive breed of MMORPG. The idea with this list was to be as diverse as possible to open up discussion on the matter.
Now, that's not saying that I don't look back and say oops on a couple. For example, When I played Mass Effect, I remember thinking... "This would make a great MMO". I blanked on it when I wsa writing the article. Anyone who writes something like this will always tell you that they remembered something after publish that should have been there.
Neverwinter Nights is part of the AD&D Forgotten Realms world, so this includes Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale as well as Neverwinter so there is huge potential as you could have all these zones and all the ones connecting them.
But given that Wizards of the coast and Hasbro made an abomination that was the 3rd edition AD&D rules I would want to see a whole new ruleset being created or a rollback to 1st of 2nd edition AD&D.
intresting list ,there were some id like to see happen but i think there are some that were left out on your list that would of of been more deserving like
fable online zelda online vampire the masquerade online mass effect online megaman online dynasty warriors online thoese are just a few suggestions as to what i think would of been great games to play online
I was just going to mention vampire the masquerade but instead of just of that they should incorperate all the stories that White Wolf has into 1 online game called White Wolf Online that way you have vampire hunters, werewolf hunters, mages, everything in 1 big game that spans the whole globe.
World of Darkness Online is already ongoing at CCP's Atlanta studio.
Aye, and maybe some of you guys could sign up to speed up the process?

if only ea would bring back earth & beyond. I'd be happy to pay $25.00 a month for 3 accounts if they did

I would like to play Zelda online. I use to love that game. I guess it may not work as a MMO though considering Link was always the lone hero.
I totally agree, when playing through it i imagined myself being in a MMO lol. Already has main city and very interactive quests, plus the combat has a little something for everybody. Would have been amazing.....

Neverwinter nights seems like a nice choice.

Fallout MMO Would be great
Mechwarrior. Would love to see a Mech MMO as good as Mechwarrior to customize the best machines ever built!
Pokemon Online. Alot might agree and alot might disagree but i sure one would love to see a Pokemon MMO go up in the future.
Resident Evil MMO (or a normal Zombie MMO) / Surviveal MMO
Another re-amped World War 2 MMO
