EDIT: The first servers got tapped out so fast that they just added 6 more today... hopefully they are running now. Check it out and tell all your friends and family... since it's free you wont be creating any money burning addicts Can't wait for this game to go commercial so I can hookup my character like in the Korean servers.
Hey check out the english version of MapleStory on www.mapleglobal.com.
They are looking for Beta testers and changed their signup so you dont have to wait to play. It's got the highest CCU figures in Korea (more than lineage and RO)... and best of all it's free to play It should stay free to play as well... they make money off optional item sales. Sounds like they dont make money right? Well I played the Korean version and I spent like $20 on my character so let me tell you they make money Anyway, check it out. It's a pretty casual MMORPG so if you have any little siblings or cousins let them know.
I think there is a Windows 98/ME bug though that they are working out =(
Peace!

The real cash for in-game items are the wave of the future in MMO's.
Sorry, but after playing Lineage 2, I'm avoiding Korean games like the plague.
The MapleStory servers are currently pretty maxed out. We will have more servers up within 3days. Sorry for the inconvenience.

the idea of paying for in-game items has always made me sick to the stomach. Reminds me of such horrible online atrocities as Habbo Hotel, and then I feel like shooting myself.

Buying in-game items would make me sick too BUT Maple does it in a different way then most people think. MapleStory doesn't sell +10 attack axes or Magic potions etc. Most of the items are items that do not affect play. For example, imagine buying a cool looking axe in the cash shop. When you equip it you actually double equip. Meaning... you mask your real axe with a cool looking skin. In this way, MapleStory gets thousands of unique looking players that buy cosmetic enhancements for their characters. In this way, they avoid adulterating the game experience.
I don't like the idea. Even as a cosmetic form of enhancment.
Part of the fun is getting BOTH unique and powerful items that you have to work for, not buy.
I never want to read this line in a game...
"Hey that is a cool looking sword, how much did it cost ?"
Thanks

well just to play devil's advocate, what about changing your hairstyle or wearing a Bruce Lee suit over over chainmail or an eye patch or sunglasses or a goatee ^^. All I'm saying is there are plenty of items that I dont think have to be earned. Or if your name tag shows on screen in a different font or color. It allows there to be thousands of different kinds of Characters, makes the look game unique, and allows the game to remain FREE. There are enough game items to make everyone unique in some way but some people just want that extra X factor to look outrageous. You dont have to buy... you may even think only tools would modify with cash items... but there are some people who want their characters to wear a cowboy hat and make the whole cowboy ensemble. That being said, everyone has a right to their own opinion. I'm against game affecting items but these items seem cool to me.
They also have a cash item on he Korean service where you can make it snow on the screen for a while and a message pops up. It's pretty cool... you can wish someone happy birthday or let everyone on screen know... whatever.
check this link out and look at the characters.

So...it's free as long as you want to look cookie cutter an dhave nothing cool. If you want to excell at teh game or look unique, it costs money. I am not going to be helping Koreas economy by pushing har currency over there.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
haha... no. You can look unique without paying. Only about 5-10% of the people buy items i think. But if you pay you can get different items... and since it keeps the game free people stay happy. Personally, if someone wants to kill monsters wearing snorkelling gear more power to them. Whether that is cool looking or not is... er.
Also, being cool in the game is more about your level and skills... your items mask those. So ultimately if you are a level 60 theif you are gonna be cool whether you have the flippers on or not. However, it just adds a little flava i think.
That's exactly what I'm saying! I thought it was a bit slow until lvl 8 (when you class up) but this game rocks. Pick your job carefully... they're a few forums on which ones to pick on other sites but I cant give good advice since I havent played them all
1st. I am not shooting it down. Just getting some clarification. No, I am not downloading a Side scroller I don't care how cool it is. Main reason...I just don't have the time for another game right now. Maybe I will check it out later on down the line.

Hatefull... that's cool man. Not saying you are shooting it down... we only have so much time in the day. If you get time though, you should check it out. But why you gotta hate on the Korean economy... jk I guess you have to live up to the name =D
Gameon!
I dont understand why many people in these forums needs to take the liberty in classifying themselves the best god-reviewer of all mmorpgs ever constructed.
The guy is making his own mmorpg...thats more than 98% of many of you "Im better than everyone else" will ever be able to accomplished.
This isn't directed towards all of you...just the one's who thinks their God's gift to gaming:
Get off his damn back
I'd like to see you open up 6 servers much less code your own game. And so what if it's 2D? Holy cow...he made it and he made it without a multi-million dollar budget so cut him slack.
I've been seeing this trend of God-Elitist mmorpg players here that puts down anyone who is making their own games or trying to. It's getting old and this is mmorpg.com not battle.net

Not all games are made for 20 something males also.....
The more games the better....and if they are free better yet....
I wish I could make my own game....because right now there isnt one I want to play...tired of the same ac2,wow,l2,eq cookie cutter mmos ..since your not involved in the world(meaning you cant change the world at all) and barely involved in the combat(menaing i could go take a leak while i fight)
And the item buying is such a good idea....the only problem is....losers only like to buy items when nobody knows they bought items...
The best ingame store for real cash was 10six u got 10 random items 2.99 some months the store made more than the subscripition.....didnt hurt the game at all...
Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7
Thanks for the support En1Gma. However, I have to be honest. We've got about 40 guys in our company and although we didnt start of with a multimillion dollar budget the game is doing really well now It's number 1 in Korea in terms of concurrent users (more than lineage 1 or 2) and growing fast in China and Japan. Lots of people dog our game when they first see it but I can live with that Because I know when they play it they like it or they can imagine someone else liking it. There's no game that is right for everyone but I think we have a solid product and a solid team behind it. It looks simple but believe me there is a lot of work behind this game. 2D design is not as easy as people think ^^. Right now, I am just trying to figure out if the rest of the world is ready for Maple and looks like it is as our servers are hitting max capacity. In China, we cant grow our user base because we keep running out of hardware... it's like a zergling rush LOL (so many people there). Anyway, thanks for the support!!!
If people flame, they flame but I hope the ones that do like the game will tell all their friends. And one thing I dont get about the some of the flames is... hey, the game is free guys We are doing the gaming world a favor, I think. I know I cant afford multiple subscription products on my salary.
Anyway, thanks again for the support.
I applaud you simply for doing so much hard hard and it being free.
That, in itself, is tremendous.

Well, I'd try this game...if it'd work on my system. 2 emails to CS and no responce. I sent another today demanding some sort of responce, even the proverbial "We know there's a problem, we're trying to fix it" form letter back. It's VERY bad CS to ignore people who want to try to play your game and (possibly) sink money into the game (if my wife likes the game, we sink money into it). Anyways, I don't know if it's your fault, or someone else's or whatnot, but if you can, prod those who do the CS at your place to expedite their responces in the future please
(PS- yes, I use win98. As stated in an earlier post I ran dependency walker and found that some of the API uses were for 2000 and up. hope that helps fix it so I can try this unique game)
(PPS-Sorry if I'm coming off like a jackass, but poor CS drove me away from SOE's products. If you read my posts about other games on these forums you'd know that poor CS tends to kill games, no matter how good they are. Thanks for understanding and not hating me [completely])
SOE makes decent games that appeal to nerds. Their customer service is run by jocks who bully nerds. Wonder why SOE sucks so bad...
PS... please try to understand the CS problems. We are not being jocks^^ Trust me... most of us probably cant bench press our own weight. For commercial services like Korea and China we have plenty of CS but the English beta took us by surprise.
Thank you for addressing this. I really appreciate it. The part about SOE is my signature, so disreguard that It's a joke, but it really puts into perspective how back their CS is. As soon as you have the problem fixed, I'll be more than happy to join the game with open eyes, and an open mind Good luck, and keep up the good work

While I find myself agreeing with En1gma (again). Calm down bro, you have a great point, but there are bung holes all over that simply have no clue as to what goes into making a game.
So yeah, man good on ya , and as soon as I get out of one more game I will check out your endeavour. (ok ok there is a way, I just won't sleep on thursday nights anymore). I am in the Armed forces right now, so obviously I have very little time for anything, however since I logged into my first internet game I have been hooked. And of course I have the best game idea ever right in my head. (cue histarical laughter).
So, recently I have read some books, yeah the real paper kind (I know I am a sinner) and started teaching myself how to program, creative writing, technical writing, lay out design, and about 6 million other things that go into getting a game going. Wow, I knew it was no cake walk, but it's next to impossible to do it all. And with only 40 people in your company? man do you sleep? eat? lord I feel for ya. Good work, I will take a look as soon as I get free minute.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
