Looking for some fun for the summer months...

Well basically with summer here I'm looking for something to hold my attention for a few months, so I can stop forum whoring and bumming around.

Vanguard has caught my eye, and I'm thinking about picking up the trial and giving it a whirl - I just have a few questions...

1) Hows crafting? People always talk about the crafting in vanguard - is it that important? Are crafted items equivalent/onpar with quest items?

2) Hows housing? I noticed some others asked this on this forum but never really got a straight answer. Is it instanced like Runes of Magic or is it more like SWG dynamic?

Thanks, any responses would be much appreciated.

I'm in the same situation too. Instead of just reading this damn forum I'd like to pick up a game and play and Vanguard has caught my eye. Two fairly easy questions as well:

    1) Is leveling mainly consisted of going from quest line to quest line, completing the quests usually by yourself or is there a effective way to level with groups? Honestly, the whole questing BS has ruined MMO's imo.

    2) Has station cash effected any type of gameplay within vanguard?

It appears all three of us are looking for some fun this summer.  You know what game I just started playing and love?  Bioshock.  You should seriously look into it.  When I first heard of the game, "Bioshock," seemed flighty to me and conjured images of bio graphics with cheap gameplay and unispiring story.  Frankly, the game is brilliant and fun (generally a rare combination).  Look into it.

Vanguard is also drawing my attention because of its open world.  I could log-in, summer day, have a mojito, and just travel around on my ship.  They need port-of-calls, carribbean islands (with player-run pubs), and so forth.  Pubs in the "Viking Northlands" with open-PvP possibly.

This game would do well, in MY view, to take the opportunity to expand exploration, travel, immersion, and player-controlled areas (pubs, castles, and so forth). Just a few thoughts.

Several of my guild just quit playing Darkfall and were looking for something to play. A few of us resubbed to VG and been having a great time. 2 of us are 2 boxing and really enjoying the game. I would recommend it for people looking for something to do for a few months. It really seems like the game is picking up, I see a lot of other new people in the game every day.

    1.  The core crafting mechanics are very good.  Crafting is like fighting a mob you use special attacks similar as you would against a mob to add quality and progress to an item before you run out of action points.  The downside of crafting is that it has been nerfed and items are sub par to what you can get from drops.  The only real purpose of crafting now is housing and boats.

    2.  City Building was abandoned when SOE fired all the devs and let the few remaining devs leave for better jobs.  Unfortunately housings only purpose is for storage and an extra bind point.  Housing is not near as extensive or well done as Horizons and you are limited to only a house on your plot.  Furnishing your house offers lots of options.

    1.  The fastest way to level is doing quests.  One can solo to max level doing quests in less than 5 days played.  But the game is designed to allow grinding and  group play as alternative ways opf leveling.  Some quests are designed to simulate grinding.  Such as the wardship questline which can take a player from level 28 past 40 just grinding the questline.  There are a few long questlines like that in the leveling content.  From 1-50 there is much much more content than one can consume (without turning of xp).  Unlike the post 50 content which is very lacking.

    2.  Live gamer seems to have mainly been ignored by the playerbase.

I've never crafted in another game, so I don't have a comparison.  After playing VG for two years I decided to get into crafting because I want a 50 adventurer, 50 diplomat and 50 crafter ready for when Pantheon of the Ancients is released.  Crafting is very in depth and there is a huge amount of customization available.  Crafting has its own set of attributes, tools, specialties and clothing.  Try it out on Isle of Dawn, you'll love it.

Housing is NOT instanced.  There are different housing styles and there are scattered plots available on the Seradon server.  Housing components and furniture are built by all types of different crafter classes.  Resources are harvestable by miners, quarriers, lumberjacks, reapers, etc.  Just last night I was checking out a few houses to get some ideas for furnishing my house.  I found a couple unlocked and found someone that had an aquarium.  Very cool.

Can't take credit for the fish-tank, I saw it on a Parade of Homes tour and thought it was a very creative idea.  So I took a picture.

Funny thing, I was in one house that belonged to a good friend, an australian woman.  So I decided to lay down on her bed and I left VG running for for a day and a half  hoping she'd return to her house and find me laying on her bed.  Is that wrong?

Speaking of screenshots, I run in 2560x1600, so my screenshots are also in this resolution.  I try to scale them down for posting, but they still end up being too big for forums.  How do folks post the thumb-nail pics that you can click on to get the full pic?
