Are we just getting bored of the genre.
ive only been playing MMO's for around 5 years, started back with EverQuest before I found Warcraft and during my 4 years playing Warcraft ive tried to find another MMO's to take me away from this boring grind. Today I still play Warcraft and leveling yet another ALT!
Ive tried just about all the latest MMO's and a few of the original old ones, when I say tried, I mean ive actually purchased the game and give it a good try (with the exception of Darkfall, purchased this but played no more than 3hrs and probebly wont play anymore either) I'd like to think ive contributed to those software houses which have attempted to give me what I want. However Im struggleing, no matter what game it is, it's gets boring, same grind, quests do this, bring this, with the exception of Eve Online which I found very diffrent but perhaps too complex for the masses. I say masses, but maybe im talking about my set of RL friends of which I play MMO's with, they just can't seem to get off Warcraft either, they are bored, but have fallen intot he mindset of "Ive invested too much time to give up" which for me is nonsence, no one invests time, it's a bloody game, if you not enjoying it, then in my opinion you should move onto something else.
Why am i still playing it? I do ask myself that question all the time, but I like to play with friends and right now they are all playing Warcraft.
Ive played so many MMO's but why do I find them boring? Is it because ive become unsociable and find it difficult to meet new friends, is it because ive litterally played the genre too much and need something new? Im starting to think the latter, "Genre is boring".
I do see alot of hatred for some mmo's and perhaps alot of this hatred is because of fraustration from bordom with the current MMO, whats your uptake on the latest MMO Genre, is it boring?

The Genre went to hell some time ago it would appear, some will argue that but... Lets face it when we all got into this Genre it was because there was that one Mystical game that got us into it... Most if not all of the "Vets" to this genre have either let go of our starter game or had it shut down on us (E&B).
I am unsure how many other MMOers out there can say the same, but i often find myself comparing games with the one that got me into the genre, or to a game i have played in the past.... and while they are some very good games out there right now, alot of them feel alike.... and if it feels old, and you have no reason to keep you there (vested time in a character, friends, an ingame love (hey some folks go there) or just something you can't do w/o) its very hard to stay in the "same old".
I have no clue what the reason, but it feels like to a part that WoW was the death of the MMO for alot of people. Before i get folks jumping down my throat on that, what i mean is, WoW is a great game... It combines ALOT if not mostly all the great factors from the games before it and it continues to take the good ideas of new games and put it in there. So alot of us stayed sucked into this game, that keeps adding another grind with new twists to that grind... Any game gets boring after awhile and we look for something new and exciting. But, what do we do when the game we are attempting to get away from stole the new and exciting for itself... So we are already going into a new setting bored of its nitche.
I wouldn't bull**** the community and say i have any clue how we get over the Post WoW blues.... or if i am even right or if it has just been in a large part to the lack in quality we have seen from recent MMO's... All i know is that much like you i find myself bored, and looking forward to the "next thing" wondering what it will be and where it will come from. And i also find myself a little bit mad at how cool of games Korea has been getting this last year, and that we won't see them for a LONG time.
My theory is that it is the lack of innovation and the copy-and-paste model that is going to increasingly result in a loss of sales.
Innovation needs to be introducted into this industry.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
yes,the genre went to hell, WoW shaped it into macdonald's burgers produced en masse.it no longer is an entertainment, its just a business where every step taken is yet another way to milk the cow, where originality is heavily punished ,where if your 4yo niece cant figure how it works in under 2 minutes, it must be re-designed.
we can just pray for WoW to crumble and for WoWers to get back to their original interests(baseball, raving, modded cars, ken and barbie).
once online gaming is no longer a trend for the weak minded and the business isnt based on raping the forementioned lowlife's wallets, the genre might flourish again
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
and i bet you also have the cure for cancer, AIDS, and the ultimate proof of gods existance, but u wont post them because it isnt worth your time either....
errr...yeah...*cough*
Personally, I think the whole of PC Game releases last and this year have been pretty "meh" in general.
While Eve is fun for some and a quick fix, missions are all the same and I don't get too interested in it.
WoW is getting boring after this many years playing it.
The last couple of MMORPG big releases such as AoC, WAR, PotBS have let us all down a little, we were expecting more but they never lived up to it. They all certainly let me down anyway.
I'm *hoping* the new star wars game will be good, but I am set for a let down, as Sci-Fi isn't my favourite genre, but it's still a long way off anyway, I've yet to hear about my beta app.
For a long time I did believe that MMOs was really not my thing anymore, but what I have realised is that I am bored. It is the same thing over and over again, pretty much the same mechanics, gameplay and even quest-genres are simular. It is all too predictable and you almost know what to do from hour 1.
I yearn the days where I went into an MMORPG and was totally clueless of what to do next and where to go, and actually have to chat to progress. Maybe I was just clueless in general at the time
I think most are becoming bored of the genre. The mainstream games require such a huge monetary investment that they rarely attempt to push the envelope. Its no surprise that many players are basically saying 'Same game, different world' and often using the term 'WoW Clone'. Games are trying to mimic eachothers success rather than truely attempting to blaze a new trail
I wager that the only truely unique MMO will come from a small independent developer, which will then be copied by the mainstream after it shows success
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
eh, mmos are just getting bad imo. The alure for me was the perpetual world that lasted for years. Nowadays a mmo is a perpetual world that lasts for a few months to a year if you're lucky. It's all about instant gratification, which I feel runs counter to the basic principle of a persistent online game. But eh, what do I know. The hardcore games lose and ezmode wins. The proof's in blizzard's balance sheet.
Of course you could say that no game that's come out recently can come remotely close to compeiting with Blizzard's polish and gameplay. Perhaps there's still hope. Perhaps a developer who has a clue could actually one day develop a good polished mmo hybrid that could take the world by storm. But something tells me I'm just dreaming. At least in the short term. Maybe when the economy improves and there's people looking to invest in some longshots again.
I agree that there are a lot of really bad, cookie-cutter games out there that are just trying to take advantage of WoW's success and do the exact same thing that they're doing because they want a slice of the pie. Unfortunately, that means that most genres outside of fantasy are woefully under-represented and since I refuse to play fantasy at all, I'm out of luck.
