This is for all the people that think the Patriot Act is a good thing and that the government would never abuse it.

First, it is a mystery and, second, a tragedy that more snot-nosed 16 year olds have not been "detained" pursuant the Patriot Act to protect our freedoms and national security.

Presumably, there are numerous "gag orders" which prevent any discussion of their detainment.

    We can only hope.

EDIT:  at 2:53 in the video, the "gag order" is mentioned.  It is encouraging to see this mentioned because I was thinking this sole case was more isolated.  I am confident, at least hopeful, more Americans have been "detained" to protect our freedoms and our national security but we do not know it because of the "gag orders."

dont you find it odd that a specific individual in the house was accused of this when everyone in the home had access to the phone?  Think theres a reason for that?  Maybe something more than just an IP trace?

This is actually one of those VOIP hack things.  Maybe you have heard of it?  Its a new "scam" going on.  Say you use a VOIP service to make phone calls.  Well, someone can get your IP and start making phone calls as you, by simply spoofing your IP.  There are several cases of this now.  One case a family was asleep at home, the hacker called 911 by spoofing the familys IP phone.  The "hacker" (a woman) proclaimed to 911 that her husband had just killed her whole family and that he was armed and in the home.  So the swat team shows up, dad gets out of bed wondering why someone is smashing his door down, and guess what, he gets killed.

So go ahead and presume the boy is guilty of calling a college he didnt even know existed to call in a bomb threat.  In reality, its a case of IP spoofing.  It will be interesting to see what happens with this case.  Just remeber, if you use VOIP, this could happen to you, easily.

I believe the little boy was the only one at home when the call was made on the VOIP phone. Once again, spoofing a VOIP phone is easy. The rest of the family was at church or something. I can;t remember exactly, but I heard Alex Jones interview the mother 2 days ago.

EDIT: also noteworthy, now both Court Jester and Village Idiot forum positions have been filled. Thanks for your application pop.

We are in a "new" and "different" age today that requires new and different "tools" and "resources" to protect our freedoms and our national security.

People must (must) in the interest of national security abandon, and bury, that pre-9/11 mindset in which "terrorist" means "muslim from the middle-east."

We have to enter the post-9/11 mindest and understand that "terrorist" can also be "extremists" and extremists are "Americans" as well.

Not you. Sorry for the lack of clarity. I'd call him out by name but he's the guy that works the REPORT button 24/7 on this board.

And no Dec, I'm not calling you the village idiot.  I don't think you are an idiot. I think you're pretty darn bright actually.  And I understand the game you're playing, because I've played it too.

If you are referring to me, I have never (ever) reported anyone.  Not even this guy ("I am again trying to show you how fucking stupid you are" www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/2810582#2810582).  I have blocked two people (1) baff (since removed) and (2) mrbloodworth or something like that.

Sometimes when you are as misunderstood as I am, there is a certain satisfaction to it.   EDIT:  In the past few days, I have been called everything from "diluted soul" to "arrogant snot" to a "bad" person.  LOL.  I think it is because since I have been in FINALS WEEKS, when I am supposed to be locked-up studying, this web page and its community provides a ready distraction.

I don't think I've ever weighed in on the Patriot Act on this forum before, but this video stirred something inside me.  When it was first adopted after 9/11, I had mixed emotions about it.  I thought it could be a very effective weapon in the war on terror and I didn't think the Bush administration would ever abuse it.  However, even from the very beginning, I was wary of the potential danger it could pose to American citizens.  I thought, "if this thing were ever abused by the government and turned on its own people, woah.  That could be a real danger.  Unfortunately, when the government takes on a new power, it rarely, if ever relinquishes it.  And with time, it's original purpose is likely to be forgotten and used for any reason by anyone who has the power to invoke it.  So I never thought it should be a permanent power.

But sadly, as I mentioned, the government doesn't know how to end programs, only start them.  I don't know if President Obama ever addressed this issue in the campaign, but it seems to me that he and the Democrats in Congress, most of whom decried it when it bacame legal, could end it with a stroke of the pen.  So if they were so against it then, why don't they?  My guess is, now that Obama has the power for himself, he likes it and is not so interested in getting rid of it now.  There certainly is no excuse for him keeping it as he has effectively ended the war on terror.  We are not allowed to call it a war on terror anymore, we can't call them terrorists any longer, he has ended waterboarding, promised to close Gitmo, why doesn't he reverse the Patriot Act?

This appears to be the first case I seen of the Patriot Act being used for what I feared it might be.

you hope that more Americans have been "detained" in order to protect American freedom?

a clear example of the Orwellian doublethink. I am free because i am detained.

    You blocked mrbloodworth?

I would have done that too but some of his posts are just too hilarious to be blocked.

At the topic: I knew this would happen all along.

I guess that in the eyes of the goverment we all are terrorists now unless we can prove otherwise.

I think that the kid is innocent and that their phone got hacked by someone that the kid might know from school or something like that.
