Yes they do suck. Even the newer ones bout 'first 10 levels' are annoying cuz everyone you read says just about the same damn thing.. but you can thank SOE's NDA for that I guess..
I think they do to a degree. I wish they were more detailed in what exactly they are doing instead of being made into a story. I really want to know what people are doing, what attacks they are using, what do the areas look like, etc.
Some are well written some are not. I am surprised only one has appeared with a class heading.
I wish someone would do more of the movie thing that has appeared. AS It doesn't look like and I don't expect to be in the Beta. No matter how much I wish I were.
A movie journal would be best and really wish one would put one out. I don't care how big the file is, I'm sure we'd all take the time to download it if one was put out.
Yes, they all focus on the story. Who wants to hear about the story? Im pretty sure that most people care more about the game mechanics and actual stuff that they are doing. I want to know what new spells they got, what kind of drops there are, and how cool everything looks. I want to experience the quest stories for myself. All I want now is gameplay info.
The game mechanics cant be discussed. But yes the journals are worthless, write two paragraphs that sum up to translate "I went to the store and bought some stuff" . Duh.

I mean there are boundaries within which you can write when forced into a certain perspective. I'd prefer to see the writer pushing those constraints....
"As I walked through the town I was harked by a friendly character. Although his face was cold and lifeless and his complexion bizarrely clay-like, he welcomed me with the tone of a jovial although slightly underpaid voice actor. He explained in tremendous detail the quest I was about to undertake... So much detail in fact that I almost fell asleep waiting for him to stop talking. I was mildly perturbed by the fact that although this man addressed me vocally, his visage was facing more than ninety degrees away from me. In the back of my mind I mulled over whether there might be a possibility in future of receiving a written quest parchment rather than enduring these seemingly endless diatribes..."

Awesome, I would love to see a review like that. Although Id be pissed to hear bad news about the game, Itd be funny and bold.
It sucks too that they have to be about the first ten levels. Everyone knows exactly what is going to happen in the first ten levels, its one of the most uninteresting parts of the game when you are getting the basics down.

They're a marketing tool. They'll never say anything but how great the game is, how it will cure your acne, and increase your penis size by at least three inches, etc. Even if it is disguised as some sort of adventure story.
You'll never see one that mentions any of the flaws, or weak points, or outright broken things. No honest dialogue for you, pitiful human. Now obey your alien overlords, and buy Everquest 2. And above all, do not dare to question it, or you will be... "reeducated".
In complete honesty, I never read them and never plan to. Everyone views/experiences things in their own way, but I have no problem with them being posted for the masses. Some ppl like them, then cool! It's all about customer service, and for this site to try and additional info for gamers to make their decisions on, more power to them. I salute the ppl who take the time to write them, and please take no offense I don't read them, just a personal preference. (It's like being told the ending of a movie I have yet to see, again, opinions vary as to the enjoyments levels.) I will say that the more I hear of journals, like here for example, the more "positive vibe" seems to surround a particular game. Well done writers & MMO for offering them to interested parties..

I too enjoy roleplaying, though I find doing so in an MMO to be an exercise in frustration due to the intrinsic limitations of the medium. But, I look at the beta journals from games like Shadowbane, and I run screaming from ones from other games. The ones for SB were well written, and made the game seem like it was everything you could ever want. But as we all know, the reality of things was very far removed from what was written.
i like reading the journals, most of them are pretty well written, and keep my attention for a while. all while im waiting for the game...the Q&A's are nice also.

Some do some don't...
In general they all say the same thing.

So, as a consumer, they're useless to me.

I enjoy reading the journals.
But then again, I like to roleplay in mmorpgs also.
