Dear Mom: The Bible Says You're Not Worth As Much As Dad, But I Love You The Same!!!! :)

kimmarkimmar Member Posts: 446

I love you just as much as Dad, Mom.  Even though the Bible says you're worth less if we had to sell you guys.  I would hold out for a more equal price.

Happy Mother's Day...

Leviticus 27:3-7 (New International Version)

3 set the value of a male between the ages of twenty and sixty at fifty shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel;

4 and if it is a female, set her value at thirty shekels.

5 If it is a person between the ages of five and twenty, set the value of a male at twenty shekels and of a female at ten shekels.

6 If it is a person between one month and five years, set the value of a male at five shekels of silver and that of a female at three shekels of silver.

7 If it is a person sixty years old or more, set the value of a male at fifteen shekels and of a female at ten shekels.

What does it come from?  Is that one of the slavery parts?

As a mother who believes in equal rights and opportunities, I would say no.  But I appreciate your interest and sentiment.

Just thought it was a cute way of pointing out perhaps where some of these problems in society originated.  I came from a household where my dad bossed my mom around and she had hardly any say in matters.  I would never live like she did.  I just think of things like that when Mother's Day comes around.  I love her and feel bad for what she had to go through.

Not every thread which one disagrees with is a troll thread.  In fact, I'd say genuine trolling is exceedingly rare.  More often, the term troll is simply used as a label to silence opposition.  A true troll has no real interest in the subject matter of his post; he simply wishes to incite a riot.  That said, there are quite a few threads in which the OP genuinely believes, yet the thread is still destined to draw a fair amount of impassioned replies.  This may be one of them.

To the OP, every major religion is a convocation of often disagreeing sources.  When looking at Christianity, Leviticus and Revelations specifically have their share of odd parts if taken literally.

Women were oppressed, yes.  To a lesser degree than in the past, they are still oppressed.  I do not think religion was necessarily a major cause, though.  Rather, it was a major justification and a major means of perpetuating these standards.  Religious texts, when examined in aggregate, contain such a variety of viewpoints that one can essentially justify anything they please.  Religion is often used to provide a "moral" reasoning for a societal or cultural standard.

I personally don't think it's that cute to turn a holiday wish into a bashing thread.  Sorry about your mother, but it sounds to me like your beef is with your father, not the Bible.  Your blaming the Book of Leviticus for society's problems?  Gee, I think I would be more likely to lay it on things like drug abuse and teen pregnancy and such.

Yeah, you're right.  Our historical past has nothing to do with the problems today.  We just sort of appeared here this way.

And I wouldn't consider pointing out something "bashing".

    I agree.

I do consider myself very much a Christian.  But quite a liberal Christian.  I do not believe the Bible should ever be used to beat up on someone or justify the demeaning behavior of one group towards another.

Passages such as this bring me a lot of confusion, honestly.  I read such beautiful things in the Bible and then I come across things like this.  I guess it's like you said though, the book can be used in a lot of different ways by people coming from different motivations.

What troubles me is, if that's the case, then what is the book really for?  I wonder sometimes if Christianity has outgrown the Bible.

Wow, did you guys just miss the whole point or what?

Go back and try to find where I said that the Bible was the sole source of those problems.  I just wanted to point out one of the sources.

You guys are so weird.  You act like people aren't supposed to discuss things that trouble them.  It's Mother's Day.  I went to church today.  I remembered this verse in the Bible.  I thought of my childhood.  I wanted to talk about how my mind made some correlations.  It's really not as mean spirited or far fetched as you can make it out in your heads to be.

While I did find your reference to Leviticus a little over the top (I tend to look at the Bible as quaint mythology mixed with primitive law, but that's just  me), I understood the point.

And a Happy Mother's Day to you.

Isn't the "Sanctuary Shekel" a kind of admission fee for visiting a temple or something? So women enter at nearly half price. That seems like a pretty good deal for you ladies.  I don't think they are talking about selling people.  Its an admission fee, which happens to benefit women and children most.

The word perhaps does mean something.  And it does invite people to an open discussion.  It doesn't usually lead someone to think that the person using the word is trying to issue a blatant statement, but more trying to make some sense out of things.

Then why would you point it out if you didn't think it was the case?  I notice you didn't blame socities ills on anything else.  And you have to understand the cultural context of the verses, you can't simply look at it through today's eyes and say, "how terrible."

I don't know the reasoning behind it myself without doing a little studying, but perhaps it because the males back then had more functions in that society then did the women.  The men were probably the ones who defended the tribe from enemy attack and hunted for food and tended the herds.  I'm sure the women had their jobs as well, but maybe that society didn't place as high a financial value on those functions.  I don't see anything that says that women were worth less as human beings as men.

You do realize...society existed long long before the bible? Bible didn't change anything...just stated the way it was back then and for thousands of years before the bible was made.

    Now that is obvious trolling.

Nothing wrong with double dipping.    Amount of time Forumers will spend quoting and requouting a quote compared to the amount of time it takes to post the quote is priceless.    For all we know this quote could have been saved up for half a year.

I personally see more than 4 hours of draining collective peoples time in the post and of course a lot more if you add up all the people that just read it.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Funniest thread Ive read in ages! My mom about fell over laughing!  Of course people had a value at that point. There weren't any machines to speak of. If you wanted food you had to have people. So say you got married and took someones daughter who worked the fields, you had to pay because if you didnt the family lost a potential which was rightfully theres. After all the family was above all else supposed to take care of there own. Such personalities generally still exist in countries where survival still remains a human job. India, Philippines, China, Africa... so on so forth. Self sufficience is a relatively new thing for singles.

The funny thing is, most Christians have no idea what all is written in their so called "Holy Book". They really SHOULD read it, and I am sure many would be... surprised. Every time when someone quotes Leveticus against gays, I ask him in return if he wears a beard, because shaving is equally abhorrent to "the Lord", or if they, as this book says, dig their excremets 3 miles outside the city with a shovel. This book is full of absurdities.

"People in general do not know what wickedness there is in this pretended word of God. Brought up in habits of superstition, they take it for granted that the Bible is true, and that it is good; they permit themselves not to doubt of it, and they carry the ideas they form of the benevolence of the Almighty to the book which they have been taught to believe was written by his authority. Good heavens! it is quite another thing; it is a book of lies, wickedness, and blasphemy; for what can be greater blasphemy than to ascribe the wickedness of man to the orders of the Almighty?

Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is none more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory in itself, than this thing called Christianity. Too absurd for belief, too impossible to convince, and too inconsistent for practice, it renders the heart torpid, or produces only atheists and fanatics."

qft as are most religious books and manuscripts.   As I tell so many people, I have yet to meet a true Christian and I believe the only person living or dead who has the right to be called a Christian was Christ himself.  None have walked the earth since.
