I am almost done with the LOTR Movie trilogy..no wonder I hated LOTR before, I didnt know the lore

I remember, a year ago, finding myself in bree with my mate and we thought it sucked. We knew nothing about how we got there, what bree is, what the whole lore is behind it all, etc, etc

But now I will! I'm almost done with the LOTR trilogy and I noticed a  lottttttttt of similarities. The shire in the movie looks just like the shire in the game. ^^

I'll pick up LOTR once Im done with the movie and lets see how it will go!

The only concern I have is that the combat still sucks (Click, kill, loot), poor animations and no quest arrow, but hey, lets give it a go!

Yeah in order to really enjoy the game, you need to have at the very least seen the movies.

    Playing - FFXIV,  ESO
Played - FFXI, WoW, Lineage 2, Guild Wars, Aion, SWToR, LotRO, GW2, TERA, Rift, ArcheAge, TSW

The quest arrow/tracker is in game now.

I'm not sure what you meant with click kill loot. Would you like that in different order or?

Remeber that LotrO is based on the books and not the movies which are abit differnt.

Btw there are now a quest helper in the game so you will get an arrow to show where to go. Combat is the same but not very differnt from other MMOs but can take som time to get used to if you want faster combat go with Champion/Warden/Rune keeper. Animations are still hit and miss, some are great and some suck.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Well I'm NOT gonna read the books but I think movies will give me a pretty decent insight into the game/lore

    Why not? :(

The books are fantastic works of literature

I also haven't really read the books, and I actually like reading. I just find Tolkien's writing style overly tedious =/

But yeah, I don't think the the game would be at all interesting unless you've had some kind of familiarity with the books/movies.

Oh reading is nice, but I can't read for long periods of time without yawing. Tolkin uses heavy english which is why I put English subtitles in the movie (sometimes you dont understand the orks, trees, etc for example)

    I don't think it'll spoil me ^^

Mate try with "The Hobbit" book, its different from other books.

Read The Hobitt first, and then the Lord of the Rings. Seriously, the movies don't give the book any justice. They tried to be as complete as they could but there's still a crapload of stuff cut out. The books are just that much better than the movie. When I was a kid, Lord of the Rings opened up a really big world of imagination for me and made my DnD sessions that much more enjoyable. Im pretty sure Tolkiens LotR book is one of the main reasons I'm so into mmo's nowadays

You can try reading Silmarillion too, but that one is really hard to read, but it flesh out where the elves are from, how the dwarfes got to the world, what the ents did that made them what they are, how the orcs where created and so on.

Another suggestion might be to try to listen to the books on CD or tape. I read the series a few times a few decades ago, and when I felt the itch to go through them again, I found that I didn't have as much time in my life to read as I would like (probably from playing too many MMORPGs).

So, I bought the books on cd. Listened to them in the car. Even listened to them while playing LotR.

Give it a try, you will get so much more from the books than just the movies.

You don't? They are speaking perfectly understandable English to me. And what exactly is "heavy English"? Also, you may not realize, but Tolkien didn't make the movies (he died in 1973).

You should definitely read the books. The movies leave out (and change) quite a bit. The game is based solely on the books, not the movies.

I can see what the OP is saying about Tolkiens style. I've read tons of books...alot of them sci-fi fantasy....and I have never read  Tolkien's works in their entirety. He was a creative and brilliant soul...but I found his writing style very dry. My experience was more like reading a Joseph Campbell lecture..than a fantasy novel. That being said..I love the Lotro...I love the movies (which i also re-watched recently)...and just re-ordered (don't know what happen to my originals) and received "The Hobbit"..and "The Lord of the Rings" in one volume. I am hoping my tastes have adjusted since the last attempt (20years ago) and I will really get into the story as it was intended to be experienced.. Meanwhile....I'll keep playing LotRO.

Listening on CDs is a great way to do it.

Reading the Silmarillion was difficult but listening to it while driving or whatever really makes it a breeze.

Personally I like the game precisely because it is different from the movies- everything in the game is so much larger.

Weathertop is enormous and Moria goes on forever rather than just a few shots.

  • YeeboYeebo Member UncommonPosts: 1,361

LoTRO not only inspired me to reread the Lord of the Rings (I hadn't read them since I was 20), I also got so obsessed that I reread the Hobbit and read the Simarillion for the first time.  Also went on the The Children of Hurin, Lost Tales, and Unfinished Tales I and II.   The depth of the world that Tolkien created is staggering.

Someone else mentioned  Joseph Cambell.  I would agree, you would have to go directly to actual mythology, or stuff a few stepps reoved from it like Milton and Dante,  to find deeper fantasy than Tolkien.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Yeah man, audio books. However, the movies are good enought to get you some background to things.

Read the book, then get back to us (and the game).  The movies are good, but even they pale in comparison to the source material.

Another option is to pick up the radio drama done by the BBC.  It's 13.5 hours long and though it's missing parts it is still more true to the book than the movies.

Teh, I am still surprised there are still people who havent read LOTR or at least watched the movies. Guess its a matter of age. Every single one I know and ever met around my age knew LOTR. Bit like Potter for the younger ones.

Alright so Ivl 15 in the game. It's fun. Great community and graphics.

There is though one thing that bother me..the combat system + animations. I dont like the way the combat is slow (you hit mob..mob hits you. you hit mob..mob hits you). Animations in the game are also very stiff. If I kill some humaniods, they will die in a weird position. In fact, it reminds me of WAR (the animations).

I got a epic quest (Vol 1). Heard its epic to do, so I'll do that today. Right atm I'm impressed by its graphics, quests and community

You, sir, are missing out on some of the finest novels ever written.  I feel very sorry for you.

I did prefer the books to the films, I am suprised you decided to play the game without knowing what the films was about.

What other mmos have you played because if you do not like the combat in lotro then maybe mmorpg's are not for you :P

op have a saying under the name " knowledge is power " and he didnt have an idea that the lord of the rings lore was before the online game, some knowledge =)

definetly is no use to enjoy the game if you dont enjoy the lore id say. in this case.

I barely understood what you said, but if you thought that I didn't know that the lotro came out after lotr, then you're a moron.  I haven't even said anything that I didn't knew that lotro came up after the movies.

If you can't read: STOP POSTING.

Even with the knowledge of the lotr movies, lotro doesn't show many similarities.

No other mmorpg has the boring combat of lotro. I've played lots and lots of mmorpg and I can tell when a game has a boring combat system. Lotro does. It's slow and hollow (atleast I think so. For me it's not fun. I like the combo system of AoC or WoW. It's fast and fun.)

No offense to the players though. Lotro just isn't me.

And the whole "know the lore!" argument is rather hard to apply to mmorpgs. You don't need to know the lore behind any mmorpg. Even after I watched the lotr movies, I still can't find many similarities between the game and the movies (the game is based on the books, yes).

I'm not a reader and I can't sit through hours after hours of listening/reading. That's why I won't read the books. I realize that, sure, I might miss some lore behind the game, but I'm certain that when you run around going quests you don't  go "Ohhh I remember this! Old lady Woodbuck also had frodo collect berries!"
