After playing 4 y wow, 4 months ddo, 2 months aoc, and at least 1 month archlord, everquest 2,shadowbane ,L2, i must confess that the best online expirience ,immersion ,role-playing ive encountered so far was in an multiplayer module in NWN1 NAMED

D&D Narcs blood.

Let me explain. The multiplayer modules in nwn 1 and 2 can have maximum 99 players online. In Narc's blood there were max around 80 players if i remember well.. But it had almost everything a role-player related to dnd adventures could ask .

Role play and interaction with other players that was indeed MEANINGFULL. Loads of races and subraces, you could create a goblin, a succubus, a minotaur, Githiaki and many many others. Exciting dungeons which were actual difficult, great party fights and dungeon crawling ,no mobs around to fight but only encounters !!! which were spawning with the round starting with your move 1st if your intiative roll was higher than the mobs and dthe opposite, and almost free pvp, you could attack and kill anyone as long as you had any reason out of the the interactions, if he insults you somehow you could attack him to make him pay.

1 small story i wont forget from playing Narc's blood to give you an idea what this module had and what role-play and interactivity means.

There were some npc's that were giving you a job.So a half-orc player picked a job to guard the gate entrance to the main city of the game. His job was to ask 2 gold coins for a passage to the city from every player that wanted to enter the city.

I was running on to the gates and i see that orc getting on my way......

ORC:Stop!! Me guarding entrance. Me wants money ! You pay 2 golds to enter!

ME: Hmm you want gold so i can enter the city??

ORC: yes! you pay money ! You wont enter if no money! Me wants money!

ME:Hmm ok i know where are a lot of money follow..

ORC: (Orc follows me 30 yards to a nearby hill away from the door) Where is gold? You promised gold ! Me wants gold...

ME: Here is your gold you gold thirsty orc! (drawing weapon)

After 13-14 rounds the half-orc died and i was left with 3 hitpoints (rather lucky) i was a githiaki barbarian(in narcs blood was a human sub-race with some bonuses to strenght adn constitution if i remmember well buy half-orcs are quite strong as well) and with the orc guard dead i passed in to city without paying 2 g fee to enter city. Now the orc didnt complained to the Gm cause he knew he was kinda more greedy thatn a guard should be and he left his post too in the encounter with me. After 20 minutes of running around i realised that thast orc was actually working and his post was to guard the city so when i left the city i gave 2 golds to the orc and he just hrumphed! :P

Im still laughing after 5 years remembering that scene there. Keep in mind that actually playign that game and expiriencing in perosn situations like the one i mentioned and many many others is by far more fun than just hearing the story.

Dm's around anytime to judge various situations loads of tools for rp and ALL THESE WERE MADE BY A BUNCH OF 3-4 GUYS LIKE YOU PEOPLE.

ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT ALL THESE STUFF COULD BE MADE BY 3-4 GUYS IN AN UNFRIENDLY MMO ENVIROMENT LIKE NWN HAS, AND THAT A WHOLE COMPANY LIKE TURBINE COULDNT MAKE A SERIOUS DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS ENVIROMENT WITH ALL THESE DETAILS THAT 3-4 AMATEURS GUYS MADE?????????????????????

I ll tell you WHY  thoiugh. The secret is that the 3-4 AMATEURS were DM'S in dnd pen and paper games and they sat down all together to make somethign they loved and thats why it was so great . Problem with turbine's DDO is that they made something fast they packed it and sell sell sell without caring about providing something you would actually enjoy. Farming dungeons without adventuring in the wilds NON-INSTANCED isnt exactly a solid free world around to explore isnt exactly the best roleplay world i dlike to be around.. rather a cheap and fast way to sell something.

Narcissus' Bonds of Blood was very well done. However, the audience for such a game is extremely small.

    - slow leveling

    - short item life (fixing is a money sink)

    - no crafting system

    - no auction house

BoB is an amazing mod for NWN, but it's a different type of game. It caters to a very different audience.

Another point is... how many people would have played BoB if there was a monthly fee?  Suddenly the grappling crashes and other 'minor' game issues would be viewed very differently.

You're overhyping. I know NwN and NwN 2 pretty well. It's much simpler and easier environment, which can't pretend to be a real MMO in any way. Turbine did good job on DDO. Besides, Roleplay is done by players mostly, and you can roleplay very well in DDO, really fun experience.

Of course DDO isn't so RPG as those single/multiplayer games, but if you want to criticize, I'd suggest you to sit down and think "how". From concept to code, to stability, to as little lag problems as possible, etc. We don't see hundreds / thousands of players in NwN mods, right?

Other than that, you'll need to wait for DDO 2. I'm totally happy with DDO now, this game only gets better each new update. And I mean really better, at lest from my perspective. Would I like to see more RPG / decisions / epic stories in DDO? Of course. But even not DDO is the best MMO out there for me, and I tried many (trying new ones to this day).

Good reason why I think DDO could really do with a quest designer, it is what turned NWN which in my opinion was a pretty awful storyline without it, in to something people improved on. Although I would bet the crap to anything decent ratio is probably pretty high, but had to turn up a few gems by sheer quantity.

I haven't played any mods, so I admire NWN for being a design tool, I still think it was a heap of clunky crap with a piss poor storyline and dated graphics even for when it was created. Although I can accept this was limited by the tiling needed for the design tool.

Well, go take a look at CoX franchise and the woes they have from their content creator released to the players.

You have to remember that players will take the path of least resistance and exploit anything possible for xp or status gain.

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

I loved playing NWN  on peoples servers.   I just wish there were more character interaction with MMO's. WHen you talk to an NPC all they do is give you a quest and accept it, why not put some dialog in there and some choices for you to pick what you say to them.  It would make games so much more immersive, if you say something wrong to that NPC he might not give you the quest or if you ask something they might give you a different quest.

Yeah that probobly is a lot more work but MMO's need to make less quests but with more quality.  Im so sick of the whole quest grinding thing, its gettng old.

The CoX mission generator isn't really what I would call a real builder, not being able to build your own map sort of rules that out, but yes I would expect anything that relies on player made content to have to filter a lot of dross. I would want the developer to pick and polish for inclusion, don't want someone and their chummy mates voting something in to the public domain.
