chrisrobhay2chrisrobhay2 Member Posts: 114

Hi guys.  I am building a new rig for some new, graphics intense MMOs, FPS's, RPGs, and RTS's and I would like to know how this would run them:

GPU: 4870 X2 in CrossFireX (I am really getting a 5870 X2 but I just wanted to give you guys something you could give a more educated guess on.)

CPU: Phenom II X4 955

RAM: 4GB Dual-Channel DDR3  @ 1600MHz

PSU: 1000W

HDD: 7200 RPM - 1TB

Network Card: Killer Xeno Pro

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Budget: $3000.00  Current Amount: About $2400.00

*EDIT* Added OS, PSU, RAM speed, and budget.

Here are the games I will be playing:

·        Crysis

·        Age of Conan

          Dawn of War II

·        Starcraft II

·        Diablo III

·        Modern Warfare 2

·        The Witcher

·        Kindom Under Fire II

     Dragon Age: Origins

     Mortal Online

Star Wars: The Old Republic (MMO)

    Aion

WoW (I may re-sub after 1 or 2 more expansions)

what about the motherboard and PSU? What speed RAM will you be buying? Do you have a gaming keyboard and mouse? If not you should invest in them as there are a few button mashers there!

    Vista?

  • dinuriumdinurium Member Posts: 79

vista is a great OS... of course people are going to say windows 7,  but I would wait until full retail on that.   XP 64  would be ok,  I honestly would go with vista 64

editted:  if you are spending this kinda cash why not spend  a few extra buck on a faster HDD.  Maybe a 10,000 rpm drive?   Of course it will not effect FPS, but load times would be much quicker.

    Chris,

Don't build a new system based off current games, but with in mind of what is comming out in the next 6 months. Cysis is fun, but it's playability and replayability aren't all that great.

So center you new build on being able to be upgraded, with ease and little cost. There is no reason to build a system with SLI/Xfire, becase total frames per second don't matter, it is minimal fps that do matter. When a game constantly goes below a certain threshold, then the gameplay experience is ruined. You don't notice high fps, but your certainly notice low points.

Marketing is about "the most", where as a gamer with a budget, you should be concerned with bang for the buck..! *smile*

Before we can honestly assist you, we need to know your budget. Secondly, build your system around two HDs, one small, one big = better IO. Thridly, a $45 Intel NIC is better than the Xeno.

DirectX11 video cards will be out before xmass... so don't waste all your money on SLI, when a $200;ish card in just 5 months will trounce that. Be more concerned about the platform/mobo and good memory, good PSU, SSD, etc..

The only choice really is what platform, Intel or AMD ! Everything else is a logical process based on budget.

    .

To the poster above me ^

I am really getting a 5870 X2 (which will be a DX11 card), not two 4870 X2s in CrossFire.  I just wanted to let you guys come up with a more educated guess.  My budget is $3000.00.  I am currently at around $2400.00.

I'm somewhat confused, as the HD5800 series isn't out..  do you mean that you're proposed build is currently @ $2400?

while dreaming is good.. , but if you buying pc just after 6 months.. setting price and half of the parts are useless. half of them will drop in price by  30% , half of the parts will be outdated by then..

10k rmp hdds are still waste of money , you shouldnt buy one, lol only game i can actually think, that ever benefited that you load 1s faster than your enemy, was cs.. but its dead and buried now..

every modern fps shooter are either to big, to have any impact by 1-2s, or have starting period.. after which it restarts/or starting timer..

loading 0.01 faster in mmo wont help you either.. all of mmos load in 1-2 seconds.. from wow to aoc/vanguard

i use good old ( not that old ) seagate baracuda, 500g. works just fine

and another fact.. there been bunch of old benchmarks, just when new raptors got released, that even the first 1tb drivers, were faster than those new ..350 gb or what it was raptors..

so go with 1tb drive.. grab 2 of them and do raid. will be much faster, and probably cheaper.. and i wont mention how much more space you will have

only clueless ppl who need best of the best, without actuall knoweledge , can say that raptor is worth anything today

shit get sdd , if you want speed.. not raptors

I guessed at the price a 5870 X2's and came up with $450 - $500.  And yes, $2400.00 is my projected price.

Well, when you get ready to buy/build your system, spec it out for us and let us see if it's missing anything or see any anomolies. !!
