Dont assume that characters will be wiped after OB. There are two scenarios you need to watch for. IF they wipe before OB to start fresh for it, then history would point to them NOT wiping again come retail. Everyone has the opportunity to play in OB (other than downloading issues), so they would benefit to leaving those who started in OB alone to thin out the Newbie zones come release. This is the same principle CoH and Lineage2 followed. It works well for a balanced release.
However, if they do not wipe the CB testers characters at the start of OB, its a guarantee that they will do it come release.
I don't believe there is anyway that they will leave any characters around to go from open to retail. The open beta is to draw more attention and more players in so as to increase the bottome line with more retail sales. If they allow a transfer of toons I believe that they will alleniate anyone that has a problem connection downloading the 2.3 gb needed to run the game. This may actually turn these people off the game as they will not have progressed as far. If someone that plays open beta gets to keep there toon, say a level 30 and deciedes on the PvP server that they will now start killing newbs well boy you will hear a lot of thos newb says that after the first 30 days they will be gone for good since they are getting ganked. Different story if everyone starts out the same there will be a few that will excel but not a slew like in open beta to wreak havoc on everyone.
I honestly could care less if they transfer the characters to retail! I just wanna play WoW! I've been addicted since I've played stress test. the days seem to go by slower too.
The forums have some questions answered by the devs today and the game is being shown at WCG. Based on the answers given I believe after this next patch open beta will begin, say mid october. They only have to add Talents for what seems like 2 classes and the last tree for Warlocks, 2 instance dungeons, finish leatherworking and tailoring, and fix a bunch of bugs. There may be a couple things I am missing, but for one I know that the next patch will be a large content filled one, based on what the mods been saying. All that can be done in one large patch, then open beta for a month from oct 15-nov 15 when it will be released. They can give the cd to production a month or so from release ie when open beta begins and have a few patches or a large one to fix the major problems before release that are found during open beta when you install the game for the first time. This is I am sure how it will be done. 11-15-04 appears to be a concrete release date.
When will Open Beta start? Seems to be far away after I read this post by a blizz rep:
Please don't make new threads when there's already a thread on this topic.
As we said, release is a milestone, but it definitely is not the be-all end-all. In fact, we have a few more patches before we switch to retail service.
I just hope those few more patches come soon.... Or maybe it'll be two more patches then the third patch will be the start of open beta.

This is a BETA test, not free gaming time. You gotta report bugs etc...
reg. wipe or not. what if a XP-expoit is found and many ppl doing thiat and reported that. Should they keep their toons?
My vote goes for wipe it all.
