Michael Shanks interview with Gate World

Agricola1Agricola1 Member UncommonPosts: 4,977

The interview is here click. However Michael lets slip something on SGW

"MS: Which as you know has a great track record. [When you're] spinning off of films, the success rate is very high ...

Absolutely. There is a franchise now. There is a brand name. The fact that there's so many incarnations of the same thing that are happening. Whether it be the failing video game or ... [Laughter] I'm sorry! I had to flag that in there. The video game or the merchandising. The various shows and the movies and whatever. There is a real entity out there."

So the question is how do you interpret this? Either SGW is doing well and he is laughing at the doomsaying or he's having a laugh at the consistency of SGW video games in their inability to reach launch? Which do you reckon? I think it could be either since without the ability to as Shanks himself or read his mind, I don't know him or what kind of person he is so it comes down to 50/50.

However Brad Wright has been quoted in an interview with Gate World saying that SGW would be happening now if it was going to launch at all and basically that the game is dead. Shanks no doubt is privy to any info on the progress of SGW if he so wishes, and I see no reason he would draw a different coinclusion than Wright. Since Wright is also privy to any information on the progress of SGW too.

Still I find it very hard to put a positive spin on this, but that's what we have the FanOri for "He was laughing at you naysayers LOL, SGW FTW! Naysayers 0, FanOri 2,623,957!".

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

I suppose its open to interpretation really. I have myself come to the opinion to wait and see what CME or Firesky says. I rarely listen to outside sources considered that they said Brad was wrong about whats happening about SGW (but we dont know if its just Kevin trying to keep fans spirits up or is speaking the apsolute truth). Time will tell what will happen but truely its not looking good. But CME did release some nice looking screenshot. Which is puzzling that mmorpg.com has shown them. I feel Shanks may not know everything about SGW but like I said its open to interpretation. People will believe its more doom or him saying SGW is doing good.

I would note he said failing, not failed.   LOL

Wow everyone seems to be jumping on the old SGW wagon atm, mind you if anything this could be a good sign, as now we will get some form of responce from CME/Firesky, if not then things are definately not looking bright for them.

It seems the only way to get some form of responce from CME/Firesky is to get some high profile person to make a negative comment about the game to get any sort of reaction from them this is not overly good in my opinion.

At this point the game is failing.

The alpha failed, no beta, no funding, all the released videos are all the same (a character model running), all the screenshots are low rez and seem derivitive of games years old (the infamous recent Ungoro Crater shot)

CME/Firesky has put out nothing that gamers in general can look at and say "That looks nice, I'd play that", not even web games or a single player title. In the beginning Tentonhammer gave them basicly a free advertising run and all the hype they could want (better than they gave to other titles that actually went to retail) and they failed to code a game. Even the free to play companies are putting out better software, heck doesn't even have to be better, they are putting software.

So far we have two big names in the franchise that make money on the franchise and all of its success's that cant say anything good about a product that they would make residual money on. If not from the game specificly, from the overall succes of the franchise.

I think it's pretty clear what he's saying. There is no reading between the lines. Just about everyone who played it, Brad Wright, Michael Shanks, MGM and all their other investors know that the game is dead because a) it was awful and b) it was mismanaged.

The only people clinging to hope that it might be released are people who have no idea what the game was actually like and a few hopeful programmers still thinking they'll get paid one day.

Lot of if's out there lol. I have to wonder what crawled up Argi' bumm though, not that I care - obvious agenda is obvious.

    Kinky!

My agenda is that FTP/cash shop is one thing, but P2P/Pyramid scheme is a totaly unacceptable method of paying for your video games. Paying a monthly fee then getting harassed by scumbags in game trying to sign you up to commands/guilds that are nothing more than a cover for someones downline in a pyramid scheme (MMOGULS) is both illeagal and immoral in my opinion.

Anyone who is OK with that kind of setup is just a desperate gamer who wants to play an SG game after so many years of nowt. Or a scumbag pyramid schemer looking for some fresh pasturers where it can prey upon even more mentally disadvantaged and naive greedy fools with more teeth than braincells.

In all probability this game won't see release, atleast under the CME flag, touch wood!

Another possibility is that he doesn't know anything more about the state of the game than anyone here does, and was laughing nervously because he realized might presume he was an authority.

If anyone has ever watched his interviews at cons.. no.. he's laughing at the misfortune of a failed game. He pokes fun where poking fun is due. He's not stupid; he's extremely SG savvy. He knows about fanfiction (slash and other), he is 'right there' should any SG stuff come down the pike (he's helping out SG:U like he did SG:A in the first episode..)
