Please.  Even before I continue with the post I'm going to ask you all, and let the moderators be aware, that this post is only to apply to those mentioned in the post.  Please do not jack this post or flame about how difficult it is to create a game, no one cares.  That's not why I'm posting.  Now that I've hopefully discouraged the lamers let me continue...

I'm interested in knowing how many of you who frequent these forums have the capability or are interested in creating an online game.  Please post below what your skills are and what type of game you would be interested in if there were such a project.  Again, disregard the flamers because there's almost always a handfull in any post that is meant to be productive.image

May I suggest GameDev and DevMaster forums for this?

And to your question, well, the skills required to create a game, and far more when it's a MMOG are broad and cover a huge area of fields, so your question isn't very valid due to the sole fact that probably half of the people are qualified to do this or that. If you really want the entire lecture PM me or something, I'm too lazy to type it all now ::::02::

If I could do something like that I would, but I've never studied anything to do with programming so I haven't even the faintest idea of where to begin image

I'm just interested in knowing if there are any people on this forum that are interested in creating a game and what type of skills they have.  I'm not saying I have any particular project in mind.  This post is out of pure curiosity.  image

I am studying c++ and i am about 1 and a half years into making my own game. but i am working alone and its a very slow process.

If your making a game you need to design THE WHOLE ENTIRE GAME before you type even a line of code. Draw out your story line, the map, every item you get invented, every little peice so that all you need to do is code it without thinking about what the game is going to be like at all.

Tell me what type of game your thinking of and i might get interested and help you.

Rage pretty much pinned what software and specifically game development is all about, tho the example might be a bit misleading because in most cases what you build is a game engine on which you add the content, so you can have a functional client before you have every single detail regarding the content in mind, but I'm straying off the point. To keep it short, lets say that the planning phase is the fundation to developing a game and if you don't have it on paper it will crumble later on (or rather play inferior).

Most of the Unreal team was done with college and their advanced studies in their fields (ie computers). :P But they were a garage dev team meaning they designed their game in their garage I believe.

C++, Java, Python, VB, C# ---> Pick your poison. image  I would love to help, but as I told Rathma and Grand Mohren, I just don't have time.  Wish I did though.  Anything is more interesting than converting old ass VBscript  programs into C# progs (currently what I am doing image).

Just a little story for you guys.  Alright, we have a Sr. Programming Analyst here in ITS at a college that is to remain unnamed.  He's about 50-60 so he is big in Fortran and Cobol.  He hates the new stuff.  As new as he likes to go is VBscript LOL.  Well anyways we have this app that he created that professors log into for student grades, social security numbers, and personal info.  Well, how does he store the login and password?  He uses VBscript and javascript and stores the user/pass in a hidden field.  And yes, you login through a web browser.  So what did we find?  Yes!  We opened the page source and voila! There is the professor's username/pass right there in the source code and most professors leave this damned app open while they are logged in whether or not they are in their offices, so any student could waltz in and change ther grade if they know what to look for.

Moral:  Stupid Sr. Analysts deserve to have their shit rewritten by a college student. image

I have considered and toyed with an MMORPG, but its really more of a hobby than a serious effort. My primary experience would be 12 years of MUD coding, as well as JAVA, some SQL, and mucking with the Torque engine.

I'm mostly interested in learning more about the graphics and area side of things as opposed to learning how to code a game engine. An engine would be way over my head!

Thank you for all your responses.  It's amazing how many talented people frequent these forums.  There is in fact a project underway but it is in its conceptual stages and information about it is being kept secret for the most part.  I'm not recruiting here at all, I'm just interested in knowing whats out there in respect to valuable programmers/designers/etc especially those that are involved in MMORPG forums and have a good idea of the genre.

What I will say about the project is that it is extremely revolutionary and completely original.  The idea is stable enough to succeed as is but nothing is perfect.  Because it is still in early development nothing can be revealed just yet.  Engine programmers and 3D designers are in the highest demand.  Thanks again for your posts. image

Ohh... are you making a single player game disguised as a MMORPG which will feature giant rabbits manning gatling guns fighting over Mars? (the planet, not the snack)
If you were to do that it would be revolutionary and completely original... either that or it would be just my same old pointless nonsense.

So, what does one have to do to get more information about the said development? subtle hints would do ::::02:: ...oh, and I like the avatar (no, for real).

Yeah, anyhow, I think I'll get my sleep deprived self to bed now.

    Kilguri,

Well that idea is very original but unfortunately we didn't come up with that first.  Once development reaches the stage where constructive criticism is necessary these forums will be one of the first places notified.

Again, anyone who is gifted in the art of 3d programming or any other programming for that matter please feel free to post your talent here.  image

    3D designers = 3D programmers?

Skill? maybe. Will? some. Time? Hardly. Sums me up pretty good.. :)

Also what most people miss when starting projects, especially ones with large worlds, is that artists/modelers/world builders are 10 to 1 compared to programmers.

As someone said, if everything is well planned and most of the project is on paper then a skilled programmer do not have to work all that hard to make it true.

I can animate fluently under 3dsmax, it's been a hobby for years. The actual MMORPG market isn't worth jumping into it IMO.

Well, I'd be interested to help with 3D artwork. I've been practicing modelling for a couple of years now as a hobby, and I can do mainly box modelling and low-med poly count models. Very high poly and more complex models are a little less trivial as I've been working on game models rather than renders.

For the most part I use Blender as a good psuedo modelling tool, and I like it's wonderful WYSIWYG UVW texturing tool, I admit it doesn't even come near to matching 3DStudio, but for the most cases 1 layer textures are enough. Lately I've started working with gMax as an alternative since it handles exporting much better (The first 3D program I ever used was 3DStudio 2 - not MAX2... the one that came out on 14 4.5'' diskettes ::::07::).

And now for my pride and joy (known as the only work that survived my burnt HD since it was uploaded and linked to a messageboard, well, the screenshots anyhow). It's just something I toyed with for about 2 hours or so, I wasn't planning on using it for anything, just toyed around with gMax and NWN export scripts.

Behold, the NC Peregrine, 650~ish poly partially optimized, made using only 3 screenshots that were available on PS original website as reference. ::::02::

    impressive kilguri,

though that degree of modeling would primarily be used in conceptual builds (early alpha testing , etc) and not a final project, that sort of skill is very usefull.  i'm sure you're capable of even more since this only took you a couple hours.

i'd also like everyone who posts to post a contact as well (just in case image )
