Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (commonly abbreviated MMORPG) is a genre of computer role-playing games in which a large number of players interact with one another within a virtual game world. The term MMORPG was coined by Richard Garriott,[citation needed] the creator of Ultima Online, the game credited with popularizing the genre in 1997.[1][2]
As in all RPGs, players assume the role of a fictional character (often in a fantasy world),[3] and take control over many of that character's actions.[4] MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player CRPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world, usually hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game.
MMORPGs are very popular throughout the world.[5] Worldwide revenues for MMORPGs exceeded half a billion dollars in 2005,[6] and Western revenues exceeded US$1 billion in 2006.[7] In 2007 and 2008 the virtual goods buying and trading has taken an amazing increase. Next to the more traditional subscription model, virtual goods are a second source of revenues for publishers. In 2008, Western consumer spending on subscription MMOGs grew to $1.4 billion.[8] The most popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft, has over 11 million paying subscribers as of 2009.
Well, I see you all can't read when I wrote, "WoW fans STFU." Or are so pissed cause I am RIGHT. You all just couldn't let the real RPG'ers state thier claims. Cause WoW players dont know what its like to take on a Monster that takes 24 hours to kill. Or dungeon Crawl for 38 days straight for 1 single item. Or know what kinda bonds you can build when you play with someone you meet on the game for 7 months straight waking up at 4 am to trade off camping shifts. Or develope a crafting that is actually usefull to many party members of all levels. that is what it is to be a FFXI player. Or work on a character for 6 years hard core and still be considered a noob. cause your game is still only 1/3 rd completed. Take your WoW 11 class junk and toss it. FFXI has 20 + classes with mixes WoW couldn't even dream of. Come talk to me if you want to know what it's like to work on a real RPG project. But for you WoW players you cant comprehind what its like when you win a battle thought to be impossible even by creator standerds. I did do end game in WoW and it was junk !!! Junk I tell you.
LOL! You talk about free speech, but then tell WoW players to shut up.
Now I remember why I left WoW! It was people like you!

If you are into RPing (the same RP that's in RPG...you know) then you can make any game an RPG. Hell, give me a robe, a staff, and a checker board and I'll make it work somehow. Grow up.

Okay dude, seriously, what the hell? I was actually agreeing with the start of your post there but eventually just turned into another "WoW is shit" hater post. Do you know how many threads are like this over the years? You're basically saying that WoW is just a newbie "EZ- MODE" game with no real crafting or anything like that. I agree to some sort but its just boring as hell now.
OP, you need to stop playing MMOs for a while and go back to school. When I originally read your post I assumed you were a non-english speaker doing the best you could in a foreign language. When I clicked on your name I was shocked to see you are a 27 year old from Arkansas in the US. Come back in 6 months and try again when your English has improved and your arguments are articulate and factually correct.
Well said, mbd1968.
And OP - not everybody wants to play a game 18 hours a day and sleep for 6 hours then play again only to stand guard in a camp again. I hope I'm not too rude when I say, most of us has a life, or atleast tries to have one.
I think the OP doesn't know what RPG means. WoW conveys no storyline? WoW has no character development?
As easy as the game is, it still fits the definition of an RPG. It in no way resembles a shoot 'em up or FPS... and no, those are not interchangeable terms. Contra was a shoot 'em up, Doom was a FPS.
If you didn't like the game, you should have quit long before 2 years. However, I think you actually loved the game, and what's really pissing you off is the PVP. I saw the comments about a fight lasting in 4-5 hits. Sure, in PVP. Did you get ganked by a rogue or DK, and decided that you had to come cry to the world about how WoW isn't an RPG because of it? Gimme a break. Go find another game that better fits your interests and stop bitching about what WoW is and isn't.
The OP is a poster named JGMIII. He's roleplaying a new personality / troll again, because he probably got banned recently=) Don't fall for it, hehe. He's just trying to get a rise out of people.

It's not the game for you. Accept it and move on.
Hmm.
I don't know if WoW is an MMORPG, like the OP says. It IS kind of like an FPS. The reason why I think this is that the PvP system is set up like an FPS, in the sense that battles don't even last long in this game. I mean, many classes have burn abilities, and they can kill any other class within 4-5 seconds if using the right abilities / trinkets.
It just loses some of the things that other MMORPGs have, like long-lasting and meaningful battles. And it's even more like an FPS when you consider that the PvP system is instanced. You basically fight random people over and over. FPS are like that exactly, you enter games with random peopole and kill them, then you repeat the same thing over and over.
So it's like an FPS in the sense that the PvP is meaningless and you fight random people every time. Unlike a real MMORPG like Everquest, you don't fight people to control zones, or to control NPC spawns, or anything like that. Rather, you fight them for useless ranking and honor points. Clearly, Blizzard couldn't work a meaningful PvP system into their game due to their end-game being hidden away in safe carebear instances. So, they had to give the kiddies a reason to PvP (Honor points, Arena Rating, Marks, Etc.) .
I'd go even further to say that games that instance a good majority of their content aren't really MMORPGs. How is it MASSIVE if everyone has their own instance to play around in? I mean, I come from games where everyone shares the end-game. That creates a competitive environment that all MMORPGs should have. I don't want my own Molten Core, BWL, AQ40, Naxx, Ulduar. That just means the end-game is boring and there is no competition. No one in WoW is compelled to farm those instances over and over because they aren't competing with anyone for them. When 5 guilds want to do a certain zone, I bet you that the members etc. would be much more enthusiastic about raiding & clearing end-game content.
So WoW basically isn't an MMORPG. It's endgame that consist of instanced content, and PvP system which is instanced, are all reminiscent of different types of games. I wouldn't call it MMORPG, or say the game has a real PvE or PvP system in place. It's good if you can't handle real MMORPGs like Everquest though.
And the guy I'm responding to, The PvP system in WoW is fake bs basically. It's system is just like Diablo 2. Your toon sucks? Make another and spec him a certain way. The game doesn't even encourage investing time into your own character! Because, certain classes will NEVER beat certain other classes. Like, even if you have the best gear in the game, and are the most skilled, it's still possible for some complete newbie with a good talent specialization to take out your character, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Even my holy/ret paladin could take out most classes in a matter of seconds, and he was specced for healing! Why should that even be possible? I mean, I liked paladins because they have the strongest healing in the game, and really good survivability. It shows you that the only way Blizz knew how to balance its PvP system was giving each class a way to burn their enemies down, even healing classes like Paladins. Even though you attack people for sucking at PvP or whatever, I challenge you to play an MMO with a real PvP and meaningful PvP system that isn't centered around farming the same players in instances over and over. Even though I had a 2k rating w;/ a DK partner, it was annoying to see that everyone who is above a certain rating is a paladin / dk or some other OPed combination. What about other classes? They should reroll?
Anyway, I guess it doesn't matter that it's unbalanced, because the PvP system sucks & is extremely boring & fake anyway.

Originally posted by Zamenity Dear WoW Fans! First off! Your game might as well be an Action MMO cause its more like a shoot'em up, than a RPG. Second PVP isn't what mmoRPG was suppost to be about when first created. I hate WoW and the name it gave MMORPG. I wish they put it under MMOACTION GAME. OR anything besides what they put WoW classifacation under. It ruined the MMORPG for people who played it for the excitement of mmorpg class games. Second: Crafting, PvE, and a COMMENTMENT to YOUR character and its development IS RPG!!! I played wow for 2 years not bad for an ACTION MMO. But how many friends did I make on the game. Well I can not give an answer cause so people had so many characters. You could not keep contact or maintain binding bonds with other players. WoW is like a brothle GAME it doesn't matter who you sleep with. Cause no one cares. Well, I haven't played WoW sense its first expansion. 3rd: I play other MMO's for 6 years. I have much better experiance with other MMO's. And WoW wasn't a game that grew on good game play. It grew on Media Hype, and grabbing an audiance that appealed to Shoot Em up Games. Studies show this time and time again. Hence, the reason why that Shoot em Up MMO is comming out what ever its called. Grew from the studies of WoW. Honestly, People who play this style of game clearly don't care about Character Development. Nore do they care about building Strong Character Ties with other peoples Avitars. I strongly urge people to play many vast amount of MMO's to find one that suits you. Thankyou For your time. { Mod Edit }

It always gets me when a WoW hater posts how he played WoW for 2+ yrs and talks about how much it sucks. YOU PLAYED IT FOR YEARS! It kept your interest and you loved/hated it enough to play it for that long. Any game you play is going to get boring after a while. Its natural. No reason to get on the hate train and start bad mouthing ppl that still like it. At least one poster I read was honest and said he hates WoW because its a "game for the masses" and he prefers games not many ppl play. Most players that post here want that elitist feeling, like they know something or are just different from all the other mmorpg'ers. In real life they cut themselves, wear eyeliner and a lot of black.

C'mon, you played two years? I only played 18 months before i grew tired of it, but I won't deny that when I was playing I really enjoyed it.
And that was a good run, so far only DAOC was a longer run for me, about 2.5 years total. (not uniteruppted)
OP played 6 years on same game? There's something seriously wrong with playing any game that long, you are just missing out on the all the fun new games have to offer.

You stated you played WoW for 2 years. There must have been SOMETHING good about it to keep playing it for that amount of time?
WoW became big simply because it had a bit of everything. Appeal to the masses, so to speak.
Also, I can't possibly comprehend how WoW would appeal to Shoot-em-up gamers? It isn't a shoot-em-up game after all?
