RPGFan's Aion review

LocklainLocklain Member Posts: 2,154

I thought I would give this a post for the people, like myself, sitting at work with nothing better to do than browse the internet.

I though the review was well written, although, I have a hard time giving many games anything above the mid 80's.  The reviewer hits on a few of the things that people frequently ask about such as the grind, zones, and PVP.

Covered a good amount of information, but understandably leaves out a lot because it's still newely released (in China).

That was an absolute horrible review. That borders on an Ed Zitron review.

The first several paragraphs[approx 6/7/8] were nothing more than repeating what i have read on Aion's official site.None of the storyline is part of the game, until like he said you do quests that are suppose to lead towards the storyline[this again i have read many times ,so is this the reviewers honest review?]or just another copy /read from other reviewers?

he then goes onto explain how gorgeous the player models are???are you joking me,they are the EXACT same looking models as anything you would see in L2 or any game for that matter, total BS lie as far as i am concerned,or maybe he is just blind or has zero knowledge to discuss the topic.

Do i really care if the models are ground breaking? no of course not, since 95% of the models are always covered in gear anyhow ,it's no big deal,i just don't like out right bs lies.

My personal opinion is that this guy probably never spent any time in the game either. He is just another in the long line of assumption makers, that using the CRYTEK engine=auto results. If you saw these player models in LOD mode they would look 100% identical to every other game, nothing new here, even the hair is george jetson glue on heads,so go figure this guy has any clue to review a game.Do i care if it uses GJ glue on heads?not really since most other games all do it the same, but again i hate BS lies by this reviewer.

I could not finish reading the entire review, because i already concluded he is incompetent and probably never played the game at all.

That ends my comments on this incompetent reviewer,i would believe nothing from this guy ever.

Thanks for the post, the "review" was a fun read. I am a little leary of open pvp but time will tell how well it works out.

    Mr. Kettle meet Mr. Pot.

If you don't like Aion why would you read a review of it?

Ultra Biased retarded reviewer is Ultra Biased retarded reviewer,im playing Aion on the chinese servers and like it and yes ... I hate WoW.

There are very few similarities to WoW and the game has being made for quite a broad audience ,not just the asian market, like I said before, counting on how much is changed in the non-Asian release,I might remain on the chinese server and just learn chinese.

  • CursedseiCursedsei Member Posts: 1,012

Eh, personally I didn't see any issues with the "review", it didn't seem biased as some have claimed. From what I know about the game, he seemed to know what he was talking about.

I didn't see anywhere in the review where it was "made only for the asian-grinders", and in case you didn't really know... WoW's also made for a broad audience, unless 11mill isn't broad enough for ya. And I don't see why they'd change the game radically between the Asian and NA version.

Wizardry, I do not get your hate or why you feel you need to spew hate for Aion and I honestly doubt you have even played it, blows my mind and seems such a waste.

As for the review, I feel it was pretty spot on. I went into Aion with limited expectations and have now been hooked for the past 3 weeks or so with multiple characters on both Asmodian and Elyos side.

The character models and degree of customization is really awesome and something I enjoy doing just for the fun of it not that I need more characters. As for it looking like a clone of Lineage 2 or every other game, I have not played L2 really nor have I played any eastern MMOs except FFXI. Now I did look at some pics of L2 and honestly, shallow are the eyes that can not dscern the artists differences and the massive amount of creation options Aion has compared to L2. Character models can be so varied from eastern looking to western looking, from more anime inspired to more lord of the rings inspired, from ugly to gorgeous and back again.

The enviroments are, most of the time, also eye candy but as the review said, sometimes they are a little lacking. What gets me about the world the most though are the little details all over the place that lends itself to seeming like a truly alive place we are playing in. Many games may offer eye candy enviroments, Aion does this most of the time as well, however where these other games fall short is beyond the eye candy the world often times feels stiff or lifeless. Aion goes a little further and gives us fauna, birds, insects, fungi and all kinds of stuff that lives in the world. Example being; I was talking to a farmer about getting him some shells that provide light and behind me i notice something small moving in the tree. I turn around and see a spider making a web. That was a big smile moment for me :)

The story is good and to be honest it is refreshing to play a game that is not based on a popular IP. As neat as it is to see Hyboria come to life or Warhammer and so on, it always ends with a lot of limits and tip toeing. Having a new fresh IP is nice and the story of Aion is well done so far. What grabs me most is the quest text. Quests are standard fair aside from the more special cut scene story quests. However in most MMOs, the quest text given is dry, dull and vanilla and leads me to simply, not reading the quests out of boredome. In Aion for the first time in a long long long time, I find I take the time to read the quests, and many of them are well done and captivate me and even some allow me to feel a connection to NPCs I work for. That to me is fantastic as most MMOs forget the RPG part, give you half arsed written quests that you skim over to goto point A and back to B for xp. In Aion, I read the quests, I get into the story and the lives of the NPC's.

Again spot on about the music in Aion. It is very well done and also boasts a lot of variety. It is a treat going to a new area and having a new sound track to listen to and yes there are a lot of them from zones, to areas within zones, to towns, to combat to even inns having different songs. ^^

Combat is a lot of fun. I would not go so far as to say it is the next evolution in MMORPG combat as the review said but it is done very well and takes ideas from other games and polishes it. Animations and the feel are as smooth and well done as WoW and if the short delay lag from playing on Chinese servers is gone for NA launch, it could surpass that quality. Combos are great and add a lot of fun to the game. Overall combat is enjoyable and feels right. I remember on my mage, I had just created him and many games when you fire of a spell, you do not *Feel* the impact of that spell. Often times is feels dull, lifeless, not powerful, just some shiny things that you throw at something. In Aion when I first shot my Fire Arrow spell, I FELT the OOMPH as it smacked into my enemy. It felt really really good to have my spell feel powerful, for me to feel powerful and know that my spell had power behind it.

In the end, Aion takes elements we all love and enjoy and raises the bar. The result is a really gorgeous, polished and FUN MMORPG that has a lot of room to grow in many directions and with the talent behind this game I am actually excited to see where they take Aion. Been a long time since a new MMO was finished and polished to hit the market, longer still that a game of such polish hit that was also plain fun to play and where I look forward to an xpack due to all the fun it will bring and not because I pray it can fix the game or bring in subs. Aion is does not a lot new but at the same time is truly refreshing and a joy to play.

So yea...good review that I agree with on most points.

Are you seriously thinking that? a few reasons why you shouldn't:

1- There is a chance every single day that your IP will be banned from playing on CN servers.

2- You are going to have to 'just' learn chinese (lol).

3- Latency is significantly worse than that of a western server

4- The vast majority of english speaking people are going to leave for the NA/EU release, and more will probably follow each month, so you'll be one of the select few english players remaining.

5- You are going to have to deal with the incredible amount of bots. Whatever happens, you can be sure that NCsoft will handle this matter better than the chinese company.

6- I don't know about you, but I feel more comfortable having NCwest running my server.

There are more reasons to play on NA/EU servers but these came to mind. I originally thought about staying on CN servers as well, but after a few minutes of thinking about it, it's madness!

Anyway I don't think the core of the game is going to change one bit. But who knows... we'll get to see what this infamous 'localization' is about when the game releases over here.

AION male and female Asmodian models (edit-without gear):

Hair is animated in AION, a bit more animated than in Age of Conan...

    Vanguard models:

    Age of Conan model:

Lineage 2 models: (remember L2 models are not full animated like AOC, AION and EQ2 models)

When playing Aion, if my character was moving, my hair reacted as one might expect. It was actually quite nice to be sitting on a traveling platform, completely still, and seeing my hair react as one would expect (it 'blew' opposite to the direction I was moving).

Considering the massive number of hair options (and indeed, character creation options in general) it's fairly impressive that they took the time to ensure that the hair animated in the way it did.

It's a little thing, but when all these little things come together, it just makes the game feel good to play.

I have to agree with Wiz (whatever his name was). The review was painful to read. I basically skipped the first 1/3 or 1/2 of it because it was a whole lot of detail that could have been summed up in two paragraphs for the purposes of a review. And that trend continued throughout the whole review. This guy just was not getting to the point on any of the topics he was covering. Overall it just seems this guy doesn't know what readers are looking for in a review and he just didn't sound professional at all (I mean I'm sure he's technically not but he could step it up if he has hopes to get a decent following that trust him).

I have no hate for Aion and would really like to read a good review that's more concise and from someone who at least sounds like they know what they're talking about. So if anyone has any other suggestions please for everyone's sake post the links.

Those cant be called reviews, those can only be called "moron typing on teh interwebz cus he thinks his smart and all-knowing"

A reviewer always needs to be objective and take into account every flaw and every good point of the game to a large audience, for exemple he wont go:

"This game sucks cause you cant insta-turn your character and it's too realistic in turning,it ruins my pvp (bunny hopping)"

If you think reviewers should be biased ... then you should also buy this magical stone that grows in the bushes at my house,it can be molded into anything ,you can trust me ,im very biased about these things,I know that only the rocks at my house rule, the others suck.

    That's excellent to hear!

Though I wonder if there are clipping issues because of it.

Also, I thought the review was pretty fair. giving a bit of the background of Atreia was a good thing, regardless of whether it is in game. That to me sounds like being thorough.

Even if they were Lineage 2 models I'd love it... I love the lineage 2 models.

And I have heard that there are some inconsistencies in landscapes.

    Seems spot on.
