Hi I'm going to order a new ati video card, and I don't know what it means to be running in crossfire mode other than the price tags. So what does it mean for a card to be running cross fire mode? and is it something that I need for gaming and 3d design?

If you're not looking to put two identical ATI based cards in your system it means nothing. To put two cards into your system your motherboard also has to have two PCIE-16 card slots.

Find out what games you want to play ... And use their chart.
Right now your best bet is a 2x GTX 260 in SLI $358 with $50 mail in rebate... With 2 copys of COD WAR sell them for 20 a pop!.
if you go with ATI i would go no less than a 2x 4870 in CF.... $500 $20 mail in rebate No games....
Both cards are the same on perfomance... at 1920 X 1200 And you will pay a $180 more get no games..and no CUDA or PhysX untill it ??????...or something new all together...

It can work either way, the method the others were talking about is called Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR) and the method you're talking about is called Split Frame or Scissor rendering where each card handles half the screen.
Some games run faster using AFR and some using Scissor so the drivers choose which mode depending on the game and defaults to AFR if it doesn't know, but you can manually set it to Scissor.
Why the hell are you guys even suggesting to this guy who clearly knows nothing about computers to get a dual card set up, if he doesnt know about a video card he doesnt know shit about power draw, and cooling and he would most likely spend his money on 2 cards and totally screw himself when he figures out his set up cant handle it.
Then take into concideration what kind of games you play, what resolution you play them at, and why you seem to be set on ati only.
Also, find out how much power you have, how much space you have in your case, as the new cards are huge, and if your case is a mid tower there is a good chance it wont fit if you buy any of the new cards.

I would say DO NOT PURCHASE any video cards at this time, save your money and wait until August/September. Nvidia will be releasing the first card that supports Direct x 11 the GT300 series. Which everyone will eventually have to upgrade to (not that particular card but Direct X 11) . Im sure ATI will be right behind them with thier own version.

I would agree with this. I have heard rumors that nvidia was planning a release in Q2, and Microsoft has already stated that nvidia will have dx11 cards ready by or before the launch of Windows 7 - now moved up to greet the holiday season. My guess is that we'll hear about it and their ion platform at Computex (June 2-6), so August/September would make sense. ATI has already stated that they are not planning to release a new generation until nvidia has launched its new generation and they are sure they can launch a competitive counterstrike, so don't expect anything groundbreaking there for a while.
For crossfire and SLI, check first that your game supports it, few if any MMOs do that.
Also, you don't get that mush more speed, you get some, maybe 25% or even a little more but it is usually simpler and cheaper to buy 1 high end card instead. And as some people said, the new GFX cards usually comes late in the summer or early in the atumn, you might want to check what is coming before deciding.
It will be interesting to see how they continue to update this given that testbeds will have to change.

Yea....Let Nvidia turn on Physx and lets see what happens. For some of you ...you might remember...why that option is no longer. The rule is that ATI dose NOT have an answer for this....So they do NOT test with PHYSX on because it's not fair?! And remember when vantage scores went through the roof, when the first Physx was tested on Vantage. Within 2 weeks they shut it down because they were taking the Cpu load and putting it on the GPU....Now thats the rule.....They were running the CPU load at much faster speed on the GPU and rendering 60 frames per...For the norm...and blew away Vantage scores!
So a unbias sites turn on Physx because you have "that" when you purchase Nvidia.
Now go find benchmarks with Physx on. and tell me who's bias?
